I like to think they would have gone in a more early Meshuggah style. (Contradictions Collapse)
But saying that I listen to all Metallica. Yes even "that" one.

I heard that he was sitting there by a total fluke. They drew straws to figure out who would sit where on the bus as a game, and it ended up that Cliff sat where Kirk normally sits. And everyone knows what happened next. Thats how some people think the song Shortest Straw came to be.

RIP Cliff. Is today the anniversity of his death? Yea... stupid question considering there's a thread on it, but I don't know.

A few quick points:
1. There was never any chance of Lars being in that bunk. It was Kirk's.
2. Metallica still would have sold out if Cliff had survived. At the time he died, James and Lars were as gung-ho as anybody could be about never selling out; time changes everyone.
3. To the extent that he's an icon rather than a person, it's a good thing for him that he died before anybody could've seen him in trendy clothes and with short hair, playing uninspired hard rock, sueing internet companies, or just generally sucking ass. That nobody seems to understand point 2 just underlines this.
That said, RIP.

I never said that Lars would have died, but if you had to pick anyone from the original lineup to die, Cliff would be last and Lars would be first. No one likes lars.

I never really lliked Cliff Burton as a bassist..I mean, guitar distortion in a bass solo? What kind of crap is that.
Oh well, RIP.

The way Kirk Hammet tells it they were using a deck of playing cards and whoever drew the highest card got the bunk. Cliff, of course, drew the death card - Ace of Spades. Whether that's true or not who knows. But I don't see why Kirk would lie just to make it more dramatic. Anyway, Metallica blows these days. Time for them to retire to Florida like the rich old ladies that they are.

I doubt it's faked; he never seemed to have any problem playing it live (I have many, many old Metallica bootlegs that confirm this) and supposedly had been doing a bass solo live since before he joined Metallica. The only reason I'd figure they'd need to fake that would be if Lars fucked up the drums.
The way Kirk tells it they drew cards to choose bunks because Cliff didn't like the one he had, he drew the Ace of Spades and chose Kirk's bunk.

lol @ lars jab
yeah actually, it was him playing a bass solo in some (san fran?) bar that got the guys attention in the first place.

I wonder what eveyone's perspective of him would be if he had not have died.
Probably quite different.
Is that bass solo even that great? It's one of the most boring solo's (from any instrument) i've ever heard. Maybe it's the 'drone' nature of the sound and riffs, but fuck it's average. I'm not bass player, but fuck there's a hell of a lot more bass soloing and playing than that piece of ass.

No the worst bass solo was the one Jason tried to do on the ...and Justice tour!
As to whether the bass solo was done in one take straight out....mheh who knows. It's possible but in the studio you can do several takes and chose the best one or create the best one from a mish-mash of those takes. I doubt that they'd have a lot of money for studio time in those days.
Wasn't the studio haunted?

personally i think "pulling teeth" is an excellent piece, and it is probably the most complicated piece of music on the entire album. its got it all; classical theory, some good old fashioned blues licks, and just about every bass technique known to man. also if you catch him on the cliff em all dvd (when metallica was worth caring about) he does some wicked variations of "pulling teeth", as well a sweet solo on "for whom the bell tolls".

Speaking of Bass.....why the fuck have Metallica not gone and re-recorded ...And Justice For All?!?!? I think thae rumor of Lars, or at least somebody fucking with the bass tracks has to have some validity. They were a very well known band in 1988 and had the money to get a good bass sound, like the one on Master of Puppets. I would buy Justice agiain in a second if they had some fucking bass tracks in there.

If they had the money to get a good sound why is the production on '..and Justice' so brittle and lifeless?
