The 2006 MLB Playoffs Thread
The Mets are going to kick Florida's ass tonight and clinch. Thus will "initiate" the playoffs, and New York is going to absolutely annhilate the National League. Inter-league play scares me though.
David Wright+Carlos Beltran+José Reyes= 2006 National League Champions and potentially World Series winners

I was just wondering what jizzard_beast thought of baseball, too! Interesting coincidence, huh?
There is no team that can survive a 7 game series against the Mets in the National League. A hot wildcard team might be able to do some damage in the first round, but I wouldn't bet on that, either.
Mets make the World Series, easily, where they lose in 6 games or less to whatever American League team makes it. Best team in the National League still isn't as good as the 3rd best team in the American League.
Right now I think the Yankees are going to be hard to stop in the playoffs, as well as the Twins. That'd make for the most entertaining ALCS, says I. This is the best Twins team I've ever seen- they've always managed to sneak their way into the playoffs through good pitching, where their lousy bats fail to make any noise. This year, they have a bit more hitting than I've ever seen. On the other hand, Liriano is done, so the Twins might not do much in a 7 game series.
While the Mets are on topic, how is the greatest pitcher in the history of baseball doing? Last I heard he was on the DL again with the bad toe for the 2nd or 3rd time this season... will he be available for the playoffs?

I think I have read that hitting a major-league-thrown-baseball is ranked as one of the hardest things to do in professonal sports, if anyone else can confirm that. This isn't my opinions but I think it is a stat somewhere.. Really , if hitting the ball 33% of the time is considered above average.....

Well, getting a hit and hitting the ball are two different things. Getting a hit generally implies that good contact is made, although you don't necessarily have to hit the ball well to get a base hit nor are you guaranteed a base hit if you hit the ball very well.
Guys make contact most of their at bats, but on average, only convert those at bats into base hits somewhere around 26.5% of the time. 28.5% would be well above average, 33% is actually extremely good.

CLINCH!
You talking about Pedro or Glavine? Martinez just played a few nights ago and got rocked by Pittsburgh. They got to him early though, and you know that if you get to Martinez in the first two innings he's done for the day.

I just hope both Detroit and the Twins kick the shit out of the White Sox. I had the Tigers winning the whole thing, but now they seem to be sucking it up a little lately. I say it'll be another NY vs NY world series, The Yankees will win it in 6.

Glavine? Greatest of all time? P-Mart of course. Glavine is future hall of famer and he STILL isn't fit to clean Pedro's jockstrap.

The Mets (and the NL in general) got killed this year in interleague play. That's what worries me most. And the AL has been inherently better than the NL for years.
Another subway series would be kind of cool, but I'd really like to see Detroit do something.

Yeah, but they leave the ball deliberately if they think it's going to be a ball - sometimes it'll turn out to be strike. I think a pro could hit it any time he wanted, but as Chris said they pick and choose in order to maximise the run scoring potential and getting on base.
Has anybody got the full line up for the playoffs? I usually keep up to date with the MLB but haven't so far this season.

How did the White Sox piss you off? As for the WS, you're probably right.

We don't really know the playoff schedule yet because no team has yet clinched. The only real locks right now are NY clubs in both leagues. The rest of the NL is wide open, the AL Central is wide open, and the Angels have an outside shot of winning the west or a wildcard spot.

Agreed, i think cricket takes the 'most boring sport, ever' biscuit. That said, baseball is pretty dull- and it really is just rounders with protection

This thread is a bit premature. I only made it so early because my team (the Mets) clinched last night.
I'll keep this updated though.

I've been a Cubs fan my whole life (I know, they suck). In Chicago, I'm known as a Sox hating Cubs fan, there are also Cubs hating Sox fans. My roommate was one of those and didn't let me hear the end of it for like a month after they won. If they don't even make the playoffs, I'll be really happy.

Major leaguers are a bunch of alcoholics. If you don't believe me, ask Sidney Ponson.

we pretty much have the wild card spot secured, but we can still get the penant yet. Our batting is pretty good too though. Justin Morneau like the best batting average in the AL. Right above Jeter.

I'm pulling for the Tigers in the AL...mostly because I miss them. They had such a good rivalry with the Jays, then they ended up in a different division after realignment, and now the two teams only play two series a season. If not the Tigers, then Minnie.
Some interesting possibilities shaping up in the NL. Right now it looks like the wild card is coming out of the west (unless Philly goes on a tear in the last few games). So it would be Mets vs. Dodgers (LoDuca and Green against their old team) or Mets vs. Padres (Piazza against his old team). Someone like Reyes should be able to run all night against Piazza's arm. (Poor Mike. Fantastic player, but they just seem to run on him at will.) Can't rule out the Phillies yet, though. (Don't know if they ever got their rain delayed game in tonight or not, but the Dodgers won so the Phillies can only keep pace.)
In the meantime, maybe the Jays can take 2nd place in the AL East standings for the first time in forever...shake things up a bit.

Will that really even acomplish anything?
I hope the Astros pull ahead of the Cards. Only a half game, it's gonna be intense.

Well, yes and no. Does anybody care who finishes 2nd in a particular division in regular season standings? Absolutely not.
But the Yanks and BoSox have locked up 1st and 2nd in the AL East for over a decade now. The Jays did some big spending in the off season in hopes of being at least a bit more competitive with those two teams. So Jays fans would like to see at least a bit of upward movement in the standings.
It would be a small victory, certainly, but at least it would indicate all of that dealing made some bit of difference. In the AL East, if any team can finish ahead of the bottomless money pits of either New York or Boston, it is significant. The significance is only to that team's fans, but that's okay. And despite the insignificance, you can be sure that Boston and their fans don't want to fall into third spot, either.

Two tag-outs at the plate on the same play. That was classic! Kudos to LoDuca and Maine on that one (and Green and Valentin, of course).
(I actually like both the Mets and the Dodgers, but think the Mets have the better chance of going further this year.)

Fucking Cards are really pissing me off by winning.
As for the Yanks, why would A Rod strike out 3 of his 4 ABs. Is he just a total piece of shit lately.
Ah, I love getting mad at things that are completly useless to get mad about.

Well, we knew the NL West were first round eliminations waiting to happen. One more game and the Mets and Cards put the kibosh down.
I still wouldn't count out Minnesota out entirely, but they are probably done. The A's rotation could do some damage in the ALCS should they make it that far, but I don't like their offense as much as the Twinkies. Tigers/Yankees is certainly proving to be interesting. I only wish A's/Twins was showing on free TV.

With the way the Cards were playing at the end of the season I thought they would have more trouble than what they are having. LaRussa must have yelled at them a lot!
As for Detroit and NY, I have the feeling it's gonna go all 5 games. I love to see good games and they are delivering.

No way. No matter what the AL team that makes it (A's or Tigers) they will beat either NL team (Cards or Mets). I say this and I'm an NL fan through and through.

BTW, after Reyes hit that HR last night, that was some of the most entertaining celebrating I've ever seen

Being realistic isn't being fairweather. A real fan knows that his team's going to lose but bets his soul (insofar as that relates to the part of you that watches baseball) on the absurd outcome: his team winning. But that doesn't mean much unless he knows that, in the real world, his team's almost without a doubt going to lose. I can't say that you're not a fan if you're not like this, but part of the magic of being a fan is believing despite thinking rather than believing without thinking.
I thought everyone in the world knew which League was likely to win the Series before the season started.

True that. I actually noticed that fairweather fans are the most likely to exaggerate either how bad or good the Sox are. During the beginning of the season, they are all 'The Sox are gonna win, oh my god, FUCK THE YANKEES!' and then when the Sox inevitably lose a series in July to the Blue Jays, they are all like 'The Sox are a bunch of loser has beens, oh my gawd, FUCK THE YANKEES!'
I wasn't a fairweather fan when I expected the Yankees to sweep us after they won the first 3. I watched anyway because a real fan hopes for the impossible, and I got it.
Just to reiterate, AL > NL - next 5 years. There are more huge money spenders in the AL and better scouting in the AL. The Mets don't have the pitching to hold the Tigers back. Do you really trust Trachsel, Maine, and even Glavine against an AL offense? They're even talking about starting Darren Oliver. Check out his stats the last time he was in the AL. I saw him pitch in a Red Sox uniform about 4 or 5 years ago and it was a painful experience.

Too bad they just lost. What's that Ludd, we're the ones smoking crack? Hahaha.
Sorry I just had to give you shit. I would have rather seen the Mets win against the Cards anyway, oh well.
P.S. That play was fucking amazing.

I wonder how much of a spike will go on with Tiger merchandise now. If they beat the Cardinals....... we could see a 400% increase in jersey prices.

Alright, yeah, the Mets fucking lost. All they needed was a fucking base hit and Beltran gets caught looking. Fuckin A.
Endy's catch was the most incredible homerun theft I've ever seen.
Damn it Pedro. Damn it El Duque, you and your fucking injuries. And goddamn David Wright's sudden inability to hit. FUCKERS. GO TIGERS.
At least there's football and hockey. I'm gonna go smoke some crack.
PS That Eckstein guy was the unsung hero of the series. I'd take him on my team any day.

Yeah, he's making a joke regarding a chain of restaurants formerlly owned by the singer Kenny Rogers. There was a great episode on Seinfeld that heavily lampooned that very place of business.
Series tied 1-1 going back to St. Louis. Things could get interesting.
