"Best" metal bands of all time?
This question is concerning the "best" metal bands of all time, different from your "favorite" bands of all time. It's still subjective of couse, but the criteria is different. Take into account things like influence, originality, technicality, consistency, progression of sound, etc...I thought this would be a fun lil thread to get everyone's opinions
1) Iron Maiden
2) Black Sabbath
3) Death
4) Mayhem
5) Dream Theater
6) Morbid Angel
7) Carcass
8) Opeth
9) Metallica (yes, Metallica. And theyd be alot higher if it wasnt for all that pussified crap theyre putting out nowadays)
10) Bathory
Honorable mention: Nile, Judas Priest, At The Gates, Emperor, Iced Earth
Whattya think?

Death and Carcass should be higher, why are Vader, Necrophagist, Decapitated, or Amon Amarth not on that list?!?

I think thats the highest Death CAN go. Maiden is generally recognized as metal's greatest band, and Sabbath basically invented metal as we know it today. I think alotta people would agree with those two.

Because Vader is pretty substandard, and Amon Amarth suck. Couldn't say about the other two.

they most definately are not "the best." however, the sheer novelty of them makes them quite enjoyable.

I was blasting that from the living room while in the shower this morning. My neighbors must have really enjoyed that at 7AM, and I made sure to scream the lyrics that I could remember while ad libbing those I couldn't. Fun shit. It's a mix disk, so Hellbent for Leather comes next, and it only gets worse for my neighbors from there...

Excellent list - add Suffocation to it and you've pretty much covered each of the most influential bands in the history of metal.

No, I don't think they should. Just cause they are the best band at dissovling themselves from the inside, doesn't mean their music is good. Seriously, if it wasn't for their uummm........non-musical activitivies, I don't think they would have gotten nearly the amount of fame that they have now.

Mayhem was the founder of black metal as it is known today in northern Europe. Euronymous networked dozens of bands and created an imagery to go with the music. One could make a case for "DMDS" as not only the best BM album of all time, but also the best metal album of all time, period. IMO there should be no question in anyone's mind that Mayhem deserves at least a top ten ranking

DragonForce could be very well on their way to having a big effect on the music industry...most power metal bands have had the problem of having vocals that were dull, boring, badly written or just took themselves too seriously. dragonforce doesn't take themselves too seriously, and their singer is good at doing the "bruce dickinson" type thing. even though their lyrics dont really make any sense they are still sung well and are fun.

hmm dragonforce comparable to iron maiden vocal wise i think not!!!!, musically sure, but come on dragonforce is all clear and girly while bruce although is very high still has some rasp and still sounds like a guy!!!
Dragonforce does have some killer music , but the vocals arent comparable to maiden, bruce is a legend in my book so dont compare him to the new school power metal bands!
