Books

Woo, i made a thread, i think just the second one since i registered.
So guys, i decided to read a book.
Yeah, that´s really unusual for me!!! The last book i read: years ago.
Normally i read magazines and mangas. But in the last weeks i felt the need to read a book. Probably because i will move to Greifswald. That´s 630km away from my home. And when i get home with the train, i can´t read only magazines or mangas.
So, i need some advice. I´m quite interested in fantasy or something with dark atmosphere, like Lord of the rings, the hobbit,... But i´m not interested in Stephen King. And the book shouldn´t be to thick. I thought even about Goethe´s Faust. So, old literature is ok. In fact i like this most.
I read something about the book "Kalevala", it´s a book about finnish tales and stuff. Did someone of you read it? And is it good? Perhaps i´ll buy it.

BTW When i move to Greifswald, i´ll be some weeks or perhaps months offline. I´ll study humanbiology there. And it starts at the beginning of october. So i´ll just annoy you some days.

Read "The Vampire Chronicles" by Anne Rice. They have a very dark atmosphere.

You've probably heard of the movie "Interview with the Vampire".....well, that's book #1 in the series. Read em all. They rule. I got my name from those books.

I think right now there's 7 books in the Vampire Chronicles series......i've read the first 5.

Each book probably averages around 300-400 pages. The second book takes place around the 1700's, and the third book mostly takes place before Christ.

You think Candide's that dark? Wait, shit, oh yeah, all the times his girlfriend gets raped. Or stabbed in the stomach. Or that old lady. Woah, it really is pretty dark. Plus hilarious.

The Count of Monte Cristo would be by Alexandre Dumas, and the book that made me want to read that book, Sleepers, is pretty dark, but not all that fantastical. Why'd I bring it up then? Cause I found a segue.

Try H.P. Lovecraft. I'm sorta surprised this didnt come up yet, just cause it's usually REALLY quick to, plus it's real easy to bring up, cause of all the metal bands who referenced it in their lyrics.

Or, if you're really willing to go into the past like you claim, try the Divine Comedy. And avoid Goethe's Faust unless you really like happy endings; if you wanna see the dude lose his soul, check out Marlowe's. But if you like angels and rose petals, fine, go with Goethe.

I'd say the systematic destuction of innocence was a little bit dark at least.

memnoch, the chronicle isnt only 7 books now...

- Interview with the vampire
- The queen of the damned
- Lestat
- Tale of the body thief
- Memnoch the devil
- Armand
- Pandora
- Vittorio(it doesnt have much to do with the normal chronicle chars but its still very nice and vampiric
- Merrick (more witchcraftish but with the usual chronicle chars)

there's also Blood and gold (marius's story...its only out in 'big' format for now though so its quite expensive)

i think im forgetting one or two(im not at home, so i cant verify in my library

btw dont even bother renting the queen of the damned movie, it fucking sucks...full of mistakes too....marius lestat's maker? wtf?
and lestat looks gay :/ and talbot looks like one of the nerds in buffy the vampire slayer that never knows what to do when something fucks up, its pathetic really
at least The interview with a vampire wasnt that bad for a movie from a book

OK, that´s quite much for the beginning.
But i´ll definately check some of the books you posted. Thanks for that.

One question about H.P. lovecraft:
I read, that he wrote a necronomicon, but there is a better one, you mentionned. From whom is it?
Which other book is good by H.P. Lovecraft?

Yeah sane, I know, I was making fun of the people who dont get that book too well(who I've seen many of, doin it in a 10th grade history class) as well as agreeing with you. You ever see Jesus' Son? Sorta similar, though less witty.

H.P. Lovecraft didnt really write the necronomicon, and that wouldnt be like a "novel" anyway. He's famous for a series of short stories having to do with the Necronomicon, such as 'The Call of Cthulu', 'The Shadow of Innsmouth', and others in that series. I only mentioned those two cause they ended up being Metallica songs, which gives you that second of moronic joy when you listen to the songs after reading em and go 'Well damn, that's where they got "Not dead which eternal lies, stranger aeons death may di' came from!'

If you're into medieval/fantasy type shit. I'd recommend the dark tower series by stephan king. They are very different compared to most of king's work. The books are a definate mindfuck, with odd ideas and concepts. I enjoyed them alot.
Other books that i recommend.

midnight graffiti - this is a collection of short stories that stray towards the darker sides. Some really great stories.

1984 - cool book

Wouldnt the Communist Manifesto be, so to speak, a MANIFESTO, a work of political or economical(depending on your view of Communism) theory, and not a work of fiction? Especially not a work of fantasy. There's plenty of books I'd wanna plug here, but it's best if you try and just give what's asked for. He asked for like medieval and dark, and it aint medieval, and is only sorta dark. Mostly it's bogged down with useless theory and huge holes, which is not quite what our friend asked for.

Goddamn commies.
