Song Writing Help

I was wondering if any one had any suggestions for me with my song writing....I'm having trouble putting lyrics to my music. Should I put the lyrics around the music or try to put music around my lyrics....I have done both but I cant seem to get what I want out of doing so. If any one has any suggestions I would appreciate it.

The traditional thing to do is to adjust music for lyrics because it will be much less obvious. I write lyrics first and then put music to them, or I write both at the same time. I find it unnatural to write lyrics for music.

When you write lyrics, keep a keen awareness of the rhythm and subdivisions and to start out with try to follow a basic structure with them. Then, write them out in big letters on a piece of paper, writing them in sylables/sounds (eg drown-ing in em-pa-thy thirst-ing for sym-pa-thy). This way it may be easier to see which time signatures you naturally write lyrics in.

This might fit better into the music theory forum, albeit songwriting and theory are not the same.

Or even in the lyrics forum although most of those people seem to read here, too. I agree with BC. I don't get too many melodies for my songs, but sometimes I get them at the same time. Usually I'll get a lyric before I get music though. Don't try to force it. Sometimes it takes time or sometimes collaborating with someone else speeds up the idea process. Have fun with it.

Well, it depends on what you're writing about. I've never written song to lyrics, but then again I write tech death. Anyhow, The English language is versatile enough to fit around any musical phrase. Just grab a brain, a story line / whatever you want to write about, and ta-da. You can continue sentences a few seconds later, etc. and emply other techniques to match the lyrics to the music. Hell, if all that fails, just grab a thesaurus. (www.thesaurus.com)

If you treat 'lyrics' like they are some kind of boring unitary process, some silly segue into an excuse for writing riffs, then your music will always, always suck.

Also, if you have nothing to say, then writing lyrics should be hard.

by my own admission im no lyricist, but as of late ive been dicking around. ive had some sucess writing lyrics and trying to make the music fit the subject matter. whatever works for you though. just avoid trying to emulate other bands/singers, whatever your own thing is its good...even if its not.

We jam and come up with a lot of different kinda songs, like more mellow, more fast ect.

Then try out lyrics someone in the band has written with the music, if it doesnt work just try it on another song you have written.

Record everything you do because what you don't use in todays song may be the perfect part to tomorrows.

I have no trouble writing music, or just very little if any. I"m just now getting into writing lyrics. Not entirely good at it, but some people have said they were ok (For Star Wars lyrics).

For example, the first song I wrote was already going to be about a man who lost what he loved and went in search for revenge (this was even before the Star Wars idea), but I didn't think about it until after I wrote the song. I just played the song, listened to it, and in a way (And this sounds cheesy) the song "spoke" to me and told me that this is what it is about and what it wants to say.

If you make the music before the lyrics, listen to the song and think about how it affects you, what do you think about, does the thing you think about when you listen to this song have anything to do with your life, a friend's life, life in general, etc. It's kind of like freewriting when you're working on a essay, only (or at least for me) more interesting and not as time-wasting (or consuming, whichever suites you).
