Suffocation - Suffocation
Thoughts on the new album? I don't think it comes close to anything pre-Despise the Sun, and I didnt expect it too, but I find it to be a big improvement over Souls ( Which I found, esp. the mid-section, to be horrendously boring). Production isn't bad...Frank still sounds bad, and the drums are a little high in the mix, but not bad. Discuss.

Not bad, but I'm certainly not impressed.

Yeah...I might just be digging this more then I should because a) I didn't like Souls and b) I wasn't impressed with the individual songs they posted, so I expected the album to totally blow. Plus, if this was any other band besides Suffocation, I would just say "meh" and not listen to this album again, but because it's Suffo, I'm forcing myself to like it more then I should haha. Whatever, I'm just happy it's better then I expected.
You also know there is a problem when the best song on the album is a rerecorded version of an older song...ahahahahaha.

nah siggi it leaked, get on AIM if you want me to send it
i like it A LOT, try turning it up real loud in your car when youre driving around. my only complaint is franks vocals and lyrics, lyrics took a step backwards (haven't seen the lyric sheet yet though) and again they tried to compress the vox. it also sounds like he tries to enunciate way more in the studio than on the album
anyways the riffs sound like souls to deny stuff, only better. and boyer is great, hes always a good addition to an album

I didn't like Despise The Sun, thankfully this album is nothing like it. Sounds sorta like Souls To Deny. And that's bad.

Got the promo yesterday, its much better than StD but I'm not too excited about it. The drums are too loud in the mix, whoever said that. I think Frank sounds good. Some good riffage. Nothing amazing.

I got it about a week ago. The writing is great, as usual. I don't care at all for the production- cookie cutter mixing makes for a less exciting album. One of my biggest problems with recent death metal albums in general is that the bass is inevitably buried in the mix. To look at Suffocation specifically, Pierced from Within was beautiful to me- it lacks the crystal clarity of any recent albums, but it's heavy as fuck and the bass is right there in the front of the mix.
In general, I find myself turned off by most death metal albums in the past 6 years not released by Morbid Angel. I give them a listen, recognize the excellence required to write it, become bored about halfway through, finish, and rarely listen to it again. I'd suggest that maybe exhibitions of technicality are starting to wear on me, but older tech stuff still gives me a boner.

Yeah, I think the bass should get the loudest in death metal, compared to other genres. I dont mean louder than the other instruments but louder than the bass is in other genres of metal. It just makes it so much.........thicker

Agree 100%. Death Metal has lost it's meaning. It's no longer about having fun and writting songs that represent "death" or "horror" or whatever it's just about trying to out do the other guy. Who can blast the fastest or how many notes can you get in a song. Most people call that "BROOTAL" but I call it showing off. Music is about a passion not a competition.

I sure as hell it doesn't go (back?) towards "having fun and writting songs that represent "death" or "horror" or whatever". That would be as exciting as the recent tech-fests.

i love the tech-fests. like everything, Death Metal evolved. now, obviously, "evolution" doesn't always mean "improvement" (you can evolve into something simpler, more basic, pure), but i do find stuff like Gorguts, Necrophagist or Nile far more exciting and listenable than, for the sake of comparision, early Death or Cannibal Corpse stuff.

i just listened to bind torture kill, and abomination reborn. wasnt too bad i thought. had some killer guitar riffs. the drums were a little bit over powering but they were good i thought. it had alot of the snare drum pounding which i dig. franks vocals didnt seem too bad i thought anyway. his vocals sounded like corpsegrinder from cannibal corpse which i thought was badass. i think i may go and pick up a copy sometime.

Well to each their own. You know? I personally find tech fests boring as fuck. Like the new Cannibal Corpse album puts me to sleep. Same with every Severed Savior, Deeds Of Flesh, Vile and Caligorge. I hate those bands. I recognize they have tallent (which is why I learn the songs to become a better guitarist) but they can't write songs very well. I don't mind Suffocation but I don't love em either. I prefer old school DM over anything now these days. Like I'll listen to Autopsy over Deeds Of Flesh or Master over Severed Savior anyday. But like I said to each their own. If people like tech fest it's great. I just use these tech bands as stepping stones to become a better guitarist.

Actually it's personal opinion. And I never said Suffo was boring did I? I said "I personally find tech fests boring." I did not name names, you just assumed I was talking about a specific band.

It's good, certainly much better than their last, but I wouldn't think anyone was wrong for calling it 'boring.' It sounds like what a Suffocation album sounds like, and while that's certainly not a bad thing, it's diminishing returns.

Since Suffocation came out, I decided to try out "Souls To Deny" a second time, and holy fuck how did I not notice how great that album was? I actully prefer it to their latest. If you can get past Frank's vocals (which is why I was at first put off by Souls To Deny...Frank sounds like shit and sticks out way too much), you have an awesome Suffo album with classic Suffo riffs.
The new one...I still like it, but does anyone else notice a lack of great Suffo riffs? Really, the only riff I can remember is the opening one to Bind Torture Kill....the new one seems like a much more drum centered album (I probably just think that due to the fact that drums overpower everything else). "Prelude To Repulsion" rules, but that's just a remake of an old song, so I don't really count it.

I could never really get into suffocation that much. They are usually listed up there with Deicide and Cannibal Corpse, but ehh.... I d'no I just think there are way better Brutal Death Metal bands out there.

I fucking totally agree with you man. Tech shit getting hella fucking boring never liked bands like Odious Boredom and shit.
But still I think Suffocation is pure BLAH! I think they shoulda stopped after Despise the sun. They lost their sound and structure especially since Cerritos coon ass aint in the band anymore.

Well, I really enjoy the album, but it's not a 'frequent listener'.
Bind Torture Kill has one hell of a breakdown/interlude.
