Syd Barrett shouldn't be at fault because Roger Waters turned out to be one of the best songwriters in rock, and Gilmour one of the best guitarists. Syd helped invent psychedelic rock, he got Gilmour into the band, and his example definitely, definitely inspired Waters to focus so much on insanity in his later writing, which is at the core of most of Floyd's best albums. And Piper at the Gates of Dawn is in no way a bad album. Actually I was playing it for a friend last night, so it was what I ended up listening to immediately when I got into the car immediately after hearing the news today.

So yeah. RIP Syd. Good excuse for everybody to listen to the funeral dirge part of 'Shine on You Crazy Diamond.'

Not a real artist? I'd let that argument stand today. But in the 60's and 70's (and hell, the 80's too), all music was influenced by drugs in some way. Whether you were doing them or not, the bands you were heavily influenced by sure as hell did.

Without drugs, alot of the great music we have wouldn't be the same.

i had a friend who could eat 10 strips totally immune to the crippling mindfuck of such a dose,eventually he lost it. but there is a correlation between acid casualties and latent schitzophrenia and i feel after reading up on this barret guy he fits the profile. the acid just brought out what was inevitable. ever since this dude does every drug on the planet miraculously not killing himself in the process, it almost doesnt mean shit, if anything the drugs brings down the insanity.
