I'm off to USMC OCS till the end of Aug!
Yes you heard right, I will be leaving Metal tabs for over 6 weeks to go to good ol' officer boot camp. I'm leaving from July 9th till August 18th. (Hottest fucking days of the summer go figure)
For those who don't know OCS is officer candidate school. As a prior enlistee i think it'll be a shit ton easier than having never been through anything. (these strictly college dweeebs) As i've heard its basically just like regular ol marine corps boot camp except on some serious physical steroid boosts.
Phew here comes 6 weeks of humid (probably hot) hell. Luckily i live about oh 15 minutes from the place i'm going to so i can visit my friends and family on my weekend liberty i eventually get. (VERY unlike bootcamp)
Eventually out of all this i'll become an f-18 pilot after about 5 more years.

If you've already had to go through boot, then props man, good luck.
If this is some deal where you just get to skate through this pussy school and become an officer in the marine corps, then fuck off.

Yes, thats pretty much what the OCS IS. The Corps always do things differently though, so its not like it's a breeze. But having been through USMC boot camp, you're worst is behind you, so sleep this 6 weeks off.
Good luck to you...
...even though I don't even know you.

Yeah, but not being as familiar with marine corps crap, I'm wondering if you're able to just go to this school without having been through regular boot camp and become an officer.

Thats definately a no, chief.
Theres no easy way into the Corps.
25% of my graduating class did early entry right into the USMC.
Course it WAS a military academy...

Didn't you just PM me about a "friend" wondering about the Navy nuclear program? As a reservist you are going to have to work extra hard to prove yourself to everyone that has been full time military. Good luck.

Once you're through, get as many OCS stickers as you can and put them on your car. You will never get pulled over or towed for anything. Seriously.

Definitely. And God bless ya. Welcome to the world of being a pawn in the big machine. It sounds like you've got quite a head on your shoulders just remember to not lose your common sense. And thanks for doing what you're about to do. Stay safe.

I probably have twice as many Jarhead friends than come from the other branches, but I'd still have to disagree with that statement. Some ex-Jarheads rule, and most of them have some great stories that they temper with 'you see, when you're in the corps, you get into a real bullshit mindset.' But the marines who never realize that are trouble. Phoney tough or crazy brave trouble.

Before Walpurgis was born his dad was an instructor at a Naval Marine Corp Reserve Center in Ohio. One of his best friends was a Marine who was also an instructor. The man was nuts. He and a couple other guys who had been in Nam, were heroin addicts, and reservists used to get their camis on and go play "war" in beautiful downtown at night. They'd talk about rolling under cars and practicing. Nicest guys under the sun as long as you were on the good side of them though. The one gunny sgt. used to babysit for me sometimes. He practically lived at our house.
The tales I could tell.

Thanks for all the replies.
In response to what was said before. No you don't have to be prior enlisted, infact probably 2-4 in my class (including me) will be. So all these hot shot college kids better stand the fuck by. haha
But its definately not an easy program to get in by anymeans. LUCKILY i finally got accepted about 2-3 months ago. I had been trying to get accepeted for almost a year now. Even with the extra weight of being a prior enlisted marine i still didn't have as great of a PFT score to really pull me along. So i've had to bust my ass to get my pft up to par.
The good thing that i have already is the discpline and knowledge neccessary to get me through this. Instead of having to learn and worry about EVERYTHING around me all i have to worry about is the things i haven't done before. I.E. drilling platoons, taking leadership role position and what not. I dont' think i'll have a very hard time at all. Granted the pt is going to be rediculous but one thing you learn in bootcamp, shit sucks but you just keep on going.
And another response to what was said earlier, i dont' know who told you about ocs being a skate on through kinda deal but its definately not. (I can't speak for other services, infact i heard that that COULD actually be true, Definately not MC from what i've heard.)
I heard the first week you are back for the 2nd set of 6 weeks. You do like a 15 mile hike, do some obstacle course, run 3 miles, do another obstacle course, and do like small unit leadership shit. Definately a wearing out event. But OCS is more designed to see if you ALREADY possess leadership ability, as its designed to pick up on your abilities and enhance them, or bring them out.
6 weeks of sucking it up aint shizz

Haha good stuff. I'm sure he'll be doing exactly what i do now. (or at least supposed to be doing)
Intel is one of the biggest booming mos' for sure. He'll be gung ho till he hits the fleet. He'll get to spend 3 months in VA beach. Although when that happens it'll probably be stupid fucking cold. Lets see August, sept, oct for bootcamp. 1 month for mct. So thats around mid november when he'll get out of that. Wow then nov, dec, and january at va beach. Nm fuck that haha. Its cold as hell.
When i went through it was the beginning of summer. Juuuuuuust right.

Going Mustang your D.I. is going to fuck with you more than the other boots. My hats off to you though. I should have done it when I was in the Corps. TM I didn't know they moved the Signals school to VaBch. Little Creek or Dam Neck? When I was in the school was still at Lejeune by the rifle range.

Cold enough. I'm not 100% sure about the VA beach area. But it snows like a fiend in most of virginia.
I'm not claiming it gets like NYC or like Michigan cold, but i'm saying it is much better in the summer to be able to use the beach and all that good stuff. I'm a cold person but you wont' catch me swimming or playing on the beach in january.
And i think the sig int place is in Tampa.. but don't quote me on that, i really don't remember. One of the bigger cities. (near there anyways) I have a friend that went through the school and now is moving onto the Radio Recon Team stuff. (good old high speed low drag)

Aren't F-18's out-dated now?
Aren't new Lightnig II's coming in or something... called F-25's possibly?
Anyhow, B-2's and F-117's are the shit, but I hear you gotta be fucking elite to fly one of those.

Ok school billets changed a bit since I was in then. You're lucky that you are going Officer while being at that school. The enlisted barracks from what I remember are right past the beach inland and get all the cold air. The time of year you are going won't be a problem though. Doesn't get super cold in that area of Virginia until January/February. While there you will also get to check out Seal Team 6's compound. Well at least from beyond the fenceline they have set up on that place.
We did surf operation training at Dam Neck when I was attending LFTC coxswain school. This was in January and the water was hellishly cold, even with Mustang suits on.
For those who said that southeastern Virginia doesn't get cold, I was stationed at the Marine Security Forces Training School in Chesapeake 1994-1997 as an instructor, and in 1996 there was such a winter storm that a good deal of the trees on base cracked in half due to the weight of the ice that was formed on them. The entire region near the base was essentially shut down for 4-5 days because of road ice.

Virginia got noticeably colder and snowier in the year or two after I moved away (1994), so it may have been the time period.

Recon Marines aren't real. They're a fairy tale inventend by Vietnamese mothers to keep their children in line.
In all seriousness, Vietnam-era Force Recon Marines aren't exactly your average anything. Most Americans are dumb as shit, but if I hand-picked the smartest one I knew and acted like he was typical, they'd come off pretty good.

What do you mean Recon Marines arent real, every force in the U.S. ( Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines ) learns how to perform Recon Patrols.

Marine Force Recon is not the same thing as a group of marines who go on a reconnaisance patrol. Not every statement is literal. Two lessons we learned today.

any seacoast area will actually be 10 or so degrees warmer than inland in winter due to the ocean, i grew up by the sea in Mass and still live near an open bay in RI, the catch is the windchill tho, in Mass that means you live in a constant wind tunnel and that ten degrees doesnt really mean much. i lived in charlottseville years ago and the winter seemed mild compared to where i grew up but it still was cold nontheless.
if you gotta go train in the water in winter you have my respect, that shit is polar bear club stuff, you have to keep moving at all times or youre fucked. have fun

Charlottesville is pretty far inland. That's where I grew up, and like I said, it started getting heavier snowfall around '95-'96 when I moved to New York. Since it couldn't deal with even light snowfall (we had snow days at >1 inch), I'd imagine it seemed much heavier than it was. Might be the case on the coast, too, since I don't think that there's anywhere in VA prepared to deal with snow.

If this is your dream come true, power to you, but seriously, why do so many metalheads join the navy and army? I just keep noticing it. And it's not just you yankee cunts.. =/

My husband was stationed in Charleston and Virginia Beach and he said that it would snow occasionally, but it was just a dusting. They'd practically close the streets and people who weren't from snowy areas had no idea how to drive in it. Of course, he would go out and "play" in it with his car. Compared to up here, it wasn't cold at all. It was more like spring when it did get cold.
Some people go in for the education, lousy employment situations, spur of the moment thing, or to just better themselves. Some want to go to war or at least where the action is.

Paddy:the fact that you didn't end up on a kids show makes me question my atheism

Exactly.
Force Recon are specialized groups of 7 men teams....guys that will eats bugs and drink mud for days on end and be happy...though they are also more than happy to slit throats....they are primarly stealth ops.
They go in deep....then come out and no one ever knew they were there.
They were around long before anyone ever heard of Seals.
