Girl with 'X ray vision'

I apologise to FBS in advance. He is no doubt gonna have a cry that I shouldnt've made a new thread and I shouldve posted this in the 'Awesome Science Thread'. But fuck it, I wanna see if any of you have heard about this, and what you people think about it. Because it's really hard to digest, and it seems extremely unrealistic.

So anyway, I was comfortable watching the Science Discovery Channel when this program popped up.

Some girl in Russia can supposedly see into human bodies, and see organs and whatnot.

She gets about 20 patients a night, for her diagnosis, and past diagnosis' have been rather astonishingly accurate.

- A man testing her asks her in which arm he suffered a fracture so after a minure or so she motions that he had a fracture in his left arm, near the wrist.

- A woman brings her sick son to her so Natasha looks 'through' him and finds a cancer growing in the top of his left lung and tells the woman to get it operated on, quickly, and thus saves the boys life.

- Another young man goes to her with suspected Tuberculosis but she diagnoses something different, which she didnt know the term for, soshe draws a picture of the mans insides... The man takes the picture to a hospital and gets a proper diagnosis, turns out he had some other condition, sc...osis (forgot name) and the picture Natasha drew was in fact very accurate.

So yeah find out more if it compells you, these links really don't do justice to the thorough info Discovery gave...

So yeah, im sure some of you mustve heard about this (especially the londoners) so what are your thoughts about it?

Come now, precious. You've gone to all the trouble to make a thread with information, multiple links and real words which use spelling and you fucking think I'm going to mind??? In this forum of ideas that should have been forcibly aborted before they hit the brainstem? Pish, tush and other derisive words, cunt.

(I may or may not be totally biased. My PhD proposal is about pseudoscience research... i.e. this stuff. I'll write something more informed when I'm finished this shit I'm working on and have time to read. It sounds good.)

To be honest, their results aren't inconclusive. She agreed that she would warrant further testing if she could identify five out of the seven and she identified four. She was given the names of all the surgical changes beforehand but not only missed a metal plate that's visible to normal people, but claimed that scar tissue in the area of the esophagus and the appendix obscured her vision when they should have indicated to her that somebody had had surgery there. She also claimed that appendices grow back. If you fail under lax scientific testing and start making stuff up as a defense, chances are that you're full of shit, whatever the stories about you might be. This doesn't explain how she was ever able to diagnose correctly - that was not the aim of the experiment - but it does indicate that it's probably not the X-ray vision she's been claiming.

Also, don't trust a link to Pravda to give you the skinny on a Russian girl.

my thoughts- maybe chernobyl had a couple benefits afterall. superhumans with x-ray vision......

maybe she is just a lucky guesser.....

another thing to think about is how many diagnoses (is that the plural) has she given and how accurate she was on all of them.

i don't see why you wouldn't get a real x-ray done because those can't lie, but if it turns out she has a true gift, sweet.

mad props foreign russian chick

Yeah i think it's a bit weird how this girl can tell these things so accurately without even touching the person.

I'm not one for usually thinking this stuff is true, but this has to be.

Personally, my thoughts go to that russian guy moving things, small things several inches across a table, with telechinesis... and actually getting filmed while doing it.
Come on, someone give a little thought to this. Just start with the question - what is an X-ray? How is it used to help us take a peek in the holiest of guck?
Answer it and come to the conclusion that X-rays has nothing to do with it. So. What else allows you to see through things, but only a little bit? Hey - maybe she is capable of looking at things from the fifth direction! Seriously, for a five dimensional creature it wouldn't be anything to look into other peoples organs!
Waho.

I'm far more interested in the research using dogs to sniff out various diseases seeing as how I've had dogs that had the nose to detect when things weren't right. The one I adopted now knew her previous owner had breast cancer.

I think there's other factors in the woman's ability myself.

As with everything, there is an explanation, and we may not know what that explanation is. Many things we know of nowdays and regard as common sense or at least basic scientific logic was severely misunderstood a few thousand years ago and often attributed to things that have now been proven ridiculous in our present view of reality. Likewise, this bullshit about "x-ray vision" -- though the truth behind the situation may be very similar -- is probably something completely different that is simply beyond our knowledge at this point in time. We're certainly not in an age of complete knowledge, and to jump to conclusions on the more radical side of science and philosophy is utter stupidity. Of course, I'm speaking in broad terms, not just regarding this particular subject. But I think the same goes for almost all things mysterious. We can't wait for the truth a hundred years from now, so we insist on explaning it with what little we know. Typical human nature. Curiosity and the refusal to believe that that curiosity cannot be satisfied within our lifetime or our imagination. With that said, interesting story nonetheless. (As the tip of the iceberg when it comes to these things.)

OK, still working on other writing, but one thing springs immediately to mind.

It's not just about Natasha Whasisname but about anything at all paranormal. If you're ever fortunate to fitness a genuine paranormal event, this is what you do - take your psychic, bizzar-o phenomena or miraculous event production machine and take it directly to James Randi of www.randi.org. Don't even stop for red lights. Pony straight up to the guy and demand he look at your results.

Why?

The man will straight-up pay a million dollars to anyone who can produce an unexplainable paranoral event under circumstances which you both agree on.

Not only that, but you will achieve instant fame because the man is one of the world's most famous skeptics, a professional magician and a debunker of many, many fraudulent cunts within the pseudosciences. Youse are too young to have heard of things like Project Alpha and French idiot shitstain Jacques Benveniste, but trust me, incidents like this really made some people in the hard sciences take fucking notice of what the man was doing. Skeptics love this guy and if he says something defies the currently accepted laws of science, a hundred thousand very clever people worldwide (at a bare fucking minimum!) will immediately take interest in your life and work.

So, there you go. Instant fame, a million dollars US and convincing the world's most popular hardcore skeptic all in one go. Trust me, if I uncovered a truly 'unexplained' phenomena in my research, I would buy a plane ticket the next dicklicking day, dump my results on Randi's doorstep and enjoy the good life forever more.

The obvious reason no-one has done this as yet is because NO-ONE HAS ANY UNEXPLAINABLE PHENOMENA. Guess why? Yes, it's obvious... that annoying "reality" thing.

Some woman claimed she'd try it out in the last few years, some famous psychic. She bailed. Randi has a 'this woman has been a pussy for X weeks' clock on his website.

Good to see you around, Les. Been busy?

It was her? She's on Montel's every week. My mom likes to watch her and I have before. Some of the stuff she says I'm real skeptical about.

OK, I've finally looked at it - it sounds like cold reading to me. Exactly the same process psychics use but with a novel Russian twist. Interestingly enough, she might be perfectly serious. Many psychics actually believe that the techniques they use (asking leading questions, narrowing down information, etc.) constitute an actual skill and not a linguistic response pattern. We're pretty sure they don't have any real skill because, shit, you can learn to be a psychic from a book. There are several excellent books on cold reading which allow to become a fully functioning psychic and decieve the gullible in JUST MINUTES A DAY!!!!1111one

Here's the Randi institute on bleeding/crying statues - http://www.randi.org/jr/200512/12095intelligent.html#i8. It's pretty much old balls by now.

(Also, directly below that story is another about how people with 'faith' kid themselves that they have mystical powers.)
