FYI to those outside the USA: The tip isn't included in the price of the meal in the USA unless it cost more then $100 or something. It is normal to tip 15%+ of the total cost because that is how food servers actually make their money.

ive had friends, myself included, scolded over not tipping, and i wouldnt trust walking back in that place again. these people handle your food, they can do whatever they want with it before it gets to you. so it is kinda mandatory, in the US at least.

from working in the restaurant biz for 10 years, ive seen atrocities commited upon food, i wont get into detail, its not pretty. even if i get the wrong order sometimes or if the waitress is a bitch, i give them alot of leeway and let alot of shit slide.

edit: to stay on topic, id rather deal with a fucking tsunami than some barbarian cook wiping his grundle with my burger bun, thats just a sneek peek on what an angry kitchen can produce for you

Minimum wage for waitstaff (servers only) last I knew was $2.05 an hour. That's why they're tipped. Sometimes it amounts to less than minimum wage per hour and sometimes lots more or less. I could never do something that iffy when I worked. Hosts, hostesses, and other kitchen staff are a set wage at minimum or higher.
Here in Ohio it's 18% if you want to tip and some places add it on under the heading "Gratuity" on the bill. That's the way it was at the hotel restaurant I worked at. The waitstaff claims a certain portion and the rest they don't always claim on taxes. I tip well usually when I go somewhere if the service is good because I know they bust their butts. I also tip housekeepers in motels. Been there done that, too, and I appreciated the extra "thanks."
