Scratch in varnish
If this should go in the rtt, please, let me know and I'll delete it and put it there or mods, please, merge it.
I searched here and have a problem with a wooden surface. Since guitars are that and some of you build or rebuild them I thought you might have some ideas. My mom has 50+ year old knotty pine on a wall in her home. It's recently gotten scratched through the varnish, but doesn't look like the wood has been touched. I went to the most reputable paint store in town and they said other than stripping all of it and refinishing it they had no ideas how to do it. The color crayons for wood won't work.
I was thinking last night that the golden color is very similar to that on my late 70's Gibson. I'd have to use something to bring the wood up to that color and put some type of clear coat on it.
I'd appreciate any ideas you might have. Thanks for your help.

Don't they make some kind of varnish bondo-like compound? Like a rubdown to fill in the imperfection.

It's so thin that it doesn't really need filled. It needs color and a gloss coat over it. I just don't want something that's going to do something weird like curl or eat the old varnish.
And I'm not that much of a noob that I haven't checked search engines. Old house repair is one of the other things I like to learn about since I live in a 99 year old house.
Okay, since this is specifically about guitars here's a good link if anyone wants it. http://www.fretnotguitarrepair.com/finishes.htm
And a friend on tc offered these which looks productive. I thinkI'm going to find an old piece at a yard sale to practice on and use the amalgamation technique. It looks scary, but I'll try it on scrap first.

Possibly mix a little wax with some PVA glue and maybe a little crayon 'dust' to give it some colour? I remember something like that just being rubbed on gently with a rag?

Okay, today is the second day I've seen the term PVA glue. The other was in scrapbooking in a friend's book and she didn't know what it was. What is it?
One of those sites had something about tinting the varnish/shellac, but I wasn't sure what to do that with. Probably a stain in a small amount. I was looking at the project and it's going to be fun trying to blend the different shades to be consistent. Oh boy...

its like, wood glue. Drys clear and sort of solid, hence with the colour it would fill in the gap.

I don't know. I'd never heard of it so I didn't know what type of glue it was or it's properties. The only wood glues I've used is Elmer's white or Yellow Wood glue. I think the white dries clear, but I don't think it's the same thing. That's why I asked.

PVA tends to be used a lot in primary schools over here in 'woodwork' classes, due to the ease of getting it off clothes. Its a white glue that dries clear, but isn't is the strongest in the world, but that isn't its intention either

Okay, that's cool. It sounds like our regular white glue. I used that to hold something ceramic on my wall together and it held for years.

PVA = Poly(vinylacrylate), which is the polymer that the glue is made of. It's a very common glue, you should be able to find it easily.
