Hilarious, incredible. Colbert is extreme, I can't believe I didn't hear about this... very good though.

it was suppose to be a "roast",a satire on bush but in a friendly way. this guy went way,way out of bounds. he put everybody on the spot, not only did he flame bush but totally dissed the press corps themselves. this guy has tremendous balls to do what he did. talk about calling everyone on thier shit, looking them dead in the eye and lambasting them live on television.

fox news cut this segment during the live broadcast, all the bigs are either spinning it, downplaying it or not mentioning it at all.

The local news lady from Cleveland must not have ever heard of him because she said his name wrong. That was more amusing than his routines.

Ha, smart move. Jon Stewart would have been better though.

EDIT: I'm on the second video.. it looks a bit fake. It's also hard to believe Bush's party would have allowed this. What did they expect? I'm skeptical.

Yeah. It's hard to believe Bush's party would have allowed this. What did they expect? I'm skeptical. No one, not even Bush is idiotic enough not to understand what would happen and any politician would avoid this kind of "public flamming". I'm only in the second video and still haven't seen any clips of them next to each other in the same shot (although I am minimizing it as I type). I'm going to look for some kind of support for the validity of this "roast".

That dosen't matter, it could still be a skit. They do show a side angle of bush while Colbert is speaking but its a poor shot.

EDIT: The ending of the last video shows Colbert shaking Bush's hand. I can't find anything that labels this is a hoax. Either way, its hilarious.

im pretty sure it aint a hoax. those press dinners do happen and they are intended to be light-heated fair of entertainment, fine food, strong drink and bullshit. the administration and the press jibe each other in good fun. the intended effect is everyone gets along despite the nature of how the two interact. which is usually pretty nasty if anyone has seen some recent white house press debriefings.

hollywood, the upper ranks of military, politicians and, of course, the core elite of journalism are there to show off thier mugs, thier trophy wives and thier cheap suits to look important and so on. thats what makes this thing interesting. i dont think the president has come face to face with someone willing to call him on his shit like this, the press neither.

basically if it is a hoax im gonna eat my keyboard

It's not a hoax. You could have watched it live on various news channels, and many people did. You just didn't. Bush was expecting Colbert to be as sacless as the impersonator they had on, who did a much more subdued, safe version of him than he usually does, and as most comedians would be.

I have to say I have a problem with the kind of reaction this is getting. Right-wingers are lambasting it, as would be expected, and pointing out that, comparing the laughs he got to the Bush impersonator doing his routine with Bush, he basically bombed. Left-wingers are acting like this is some incredibly brave act. It isn't. This isn't a police state, and is actually one of the places in the world most conducive to satirizing the head of state to his face. Colbert is a comedian, and he did his job. Dyldo is completely right in sayin that they should have known he would be vicious; this is what should be expected out of comedians in this country. It should not be the exception. That we live in so pussified a world that we can celebrate as a brave act a comedian doing his routine when invited to do his routine because so many other comedians would puss out is a sad thing.

Which is not to say it wasn't funny. And not to detract at all from Colbert, who realized that he had a duty to his profession to do as he did. Just to point out that making fun of Bush in a harsh way to his face is not exactly equivalent to, say, doing the same to Stalin's face at a public dinner in the mid-30s, and that we shouldn't treat it as an equivalent act.

Exactly, couldn't agree more.

Also I saw his show today and he certainly didnt act like it was a hoax, didn't talk alot about it. Anyway, I never really questioned it. I was shocked that there wasn't much coverage of it (considering I did see a section on cnn about the bush impersonator), but that could be because of the illegal immigration issue.
