the biggest problem is that a lightsaber blade in theory is mass-less. you see them in the movies swing them as if they weighed what your average metal-bladed sword would.
another problem is that lightsabers are made up of energy focused through a crystal, compeltely fictional. you can't harness a laser like that in real life, it would come out of the hilt and go on forever. it wouldn't just stop at 3-4 feet in length.

That's why i said i didn't think it was possible.
The article you posted mentionned using an electromagnetic field to contain the light, or plasma. This field would probably work....but even if they end up making this, it'll take centuries before we can even harness that much energy and have the means to contruct it into such a small handheld device.

My initial response was similar - you need something that can contain the energy field to its intended length... and the only thing I could think of was electromagnetism. And that means it couldn't be hand held... How else could you do it?
Maybe... it could have a telescoping core from inside the handle that heats to provide a decent temperature... nope, wouldn't work either. Too much energy needed before the blade could actually cut.
Ahh, fuck light sabers.

The idea of having an electromagnetic field is probably the best bet, but it'll take a long time before we can cram it down into the handle of a little sword.
Think about how much energy it would require to produce such a high-energy beam of light.......then the amount of energy needed to make this field to contain the beam.
