Your Metal Heritage.

How did you get into metal?

For me it went like this:

Grunge/punk-Slipknot/Korn/etc-Metallica-Megadeth-Slayer-Cryptopsy(Courtacy of nHoE)

Sepultura- Beneath The Remains opened up the metal world for me. That got me into some nu-metal and thrash stuff. I moved away from nu-metal and started getting into death metal. Then I began progressing further, trading and sharing albums with MTM and Transient. And the forum/internet got me to where I am now....

Well at first, I never used to listen to music at all. Then, in the beginning of high school i started listening to some of the stuff other people in my classes listened to just to give it a try. Some of the stuff was Blink182,Linkin park,Kid Rock and poppy stuff like that. At that time i thought the music was OK but it never really got my interest. Then i began to listen to what my parents listened to which i really liked. They listened to classic rock, stuf like aerosmith, rolling stones, hendrix, zeppelin, the doors,GNR,80s hair metal. At this point i just ditched all that other stuff and listened to solely classic rock for about 2 years. Then was trying to find some other types of music and stumbled across Slipknot, disturbed, korn and some other nu metal bands. At that point i thought that was the heaviest stuff there was and began listening to that, but also listened to classic rock. I then heard of Metallica and really liked them, Master od puppets being the the 1st album i heard. Eventaully i got into Pantera and Slayer and from then on i really got into metal. Also at this point i ceased listening to nu metal, except with the very occassional(maybe once a year) listen to slipknot(iowa) and disturbed. So i pretty much listend to thrash and classic rock for years. Then I saw one of my friends wearing a Cannibal corpse shirt so i thought id give them a listen. At first i didnt really like it and put it away for several months and went back to listening to slayer, metallica, etc. Eventaully i gave it some more listens, it grew on me and ever since then ive been listening to death metal,as well as other subgenres liek power and thrash and classic rock. Also at that point i decided to pick up a guitar. And now i listen to lots of death metal, thrash metal;power metal ,80s hair metal and classic rock every so often.

Started to hate rap. Rap phase over
Pentagram & other stoner rock

Cannibal Corpse to buying death metal cds
Expanded musical taste's to more metal, some jazz, prog rock, classical through various recommendations.

Classics like Queen and Led Zep, with some Blink182 thrown in there, later Iron Maiden became a staple of my music feast.
Cradle Of Filth were a 'breakthrough' band for me,
and then it just progressed to death metal, and went to doom, with some black thrown in there, and now next to no death (apart from a little melodic death, some krisiun and opeth), and pretty much all doom/ambient and folk

Then i listend to Linkin park and i'm like whoa that's heavy (pfff... sure. )

Then my friend turned me on to metallica (everyother completely average thrasher)

Now i like Death (the band) and a lot of thrash

much like myself. CoF came after Fear factory for me though, my major transition. to put it simply:

Korn
Fear factory
Cannibal corpse
CoF
In flames
Mithotyn

so Fear factory brought on the metal side, follwed by Cannibal corpse (the most extreme i could find), realized i needed more than crunch and blast... Cradle of filth brought my love for keyboards and began the guitar melody, In flames brought in the ultimate guitar melody, and thats how i ended up with the mixed keyboards and guitar melody of Mithotyn. and i still like every one of those bands today.

BTW, I had started playing guitar in my CoF period. used a shit load of tremolo and fast drums (my drummer) and i couldnt write melodic then. once i started tabbing Mithotyn parts, i guess i got the hang of playing it then writing it.

I started listening to Sepultura when I was 11, which lead to other thrash bands like Slayer, Metallica, and Testament. My best friend and I would spend hours downloading music...anything that seemed like it would be heavy and brutal. This lead to Cannibal Corpse, Severe Torture, Deicide, Death, Morbid Angel among others.

In high school all I listened to was Death Metal. I was a somewhat popular guy who was a total pothead and for the most part, a burned out loser....but I had alot of friends for some reason. When I was 17 I stopped smoking pot and for some reason I got into Iron Maiden and Motorhead to the maximum extent a person can get into those bands.

I graduated when I was 17, so I had alot of free time afterwards. I don't remember how but I stumbled across a website about Mayhem. I thought to myself "why have I been missing out on this!" The story is what sold me, the fact that the guitarist got murdered, the vocalist shot himself, and all the other details just sucked me in. This was my introduction to black metal, and I've remained a fan since.

My journey into black metal started with accesible bands like Mayhem, Marduk, Immortal, Burzum and later Dissection, Emperor, Enslaved etc. and slowly pregressed into bands like Darkthrone, Mutiilation, Vlad Tepes, Black Murder, Von, Sargeist, Sacramentum, Watain etc.

The last thing I got into was shred, which never really interested me until I started listening to Jason Becker. Ever since I got into shred it's the only style of music I play on the guitar.

People mature man, flaw in your argument.

Metallica S&M> Metallica > Megadeth > Exodus, Testament, S.O.D, Wehrmacht, Coroner> Decapitated, Vomitory etc

My mate did me a CD with all these death bands on it, back when I listened to thrash, and the real song that opened my eyes to death metal, was Skin To Liquid. I just sat up and realised that death metal was fucking immense.

(Regarding Kalmah's post) How else did we ourselves graduate from the introduction cycle of metal to the deeper, arguably superior part of it? We were all nu-heads at one time, and that's what gives us the right to piss on the present nu-heads.

As far as my particular descent into metal madness, I think it's basically the same as everyone elses. Limp Bizkit bullshit - System Of A Down/Rage Against The Machine type shit - Metallica - Hatebreed-style hardcore/metalcore stuff - Pantera and other heavier but not extreme metal bands - then things like black and death metal.

EDIT: Not that I don't still like some like RATM and Metallica etc, but still it's all about musical evolution.

I liked Snow/Aerosmith when I was 5-6..

When I was 10-12 I was obsessed with The Offspring.

I didn't really listen to music until grade 8...downloaded a bunch of Misfits after seeing a shirt..bought the shirt, bought the cds..got into more REAL punk(never like Blink,ect..thought that they were a joke)..Dead Kennedy's..Minor Threat..Black Flag..The Ramones..Seeing Glen Danzig being a founding member of the Misfits, I got into some of his solo work, edging towards metal.

BOOM! Ozzy, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Slayer..I "liked" slipknot(heavy influence on friends) for about 2 weeks..only because they were the most "extreme" band I had heard...I hated the singing, the gimmacks, 90% of the riffs/excessive drumming..quickly got into REAL DEATH/THRASH/MELODIC METAL.. Death/COB..which got me into melodic death metal, which got me into folk/viking metal.

i grew up in 80s so, it was early metallica, mid iron maiden, megadeth and the good era of slayer.

but i kinda drifted away and got into hardcore later in jr high and high school so....around the early 90s underground hardcore, grindcore, crust<the grindcore related to hardcore, not this gore shit everyone insists is grindCORE> was more interesting than the early black metal stuff and death metal stuff at that time.

around 1999 or so i started listening to metal more often, alot of old death metal and black metal acts matured to put out some killer stuff. and older thrash never got boring.

Huh ... let's see ...

I got into metal when I was 12, and being brought up in church, I had to listen to christian metal. My parents re-enforced my choice of music by properly disposing anything I got a hold of that was non-Christian. Christian metal is extremely mediocre, I know because no matter how many christian metal bands I got a hold of, Korn and Slipknot were always 1000000x better, and it was a grand disappointment having to war with myself over the ethics of listening to music that I liked ( something that is really too heady for a 12 year old to ponder : If I listen to music I like, then I go to hell. If I listen to music that sucks, then I go to heaven. Is this a raw deal or what? ) as opposed to music that sucked.

Even the bands that WERE good, like Zao or Living Sacrifice, were coming under fire from the Christian music scene for not adhering strongly enough to being 'christian' --- In christian metal, there's JPM : 'Jesus's Per Minute'. I remember some youth pastors telling everyone that if Jesus was'nt mentioned in every song, it was a cd that you should'nt buy. Bands who adhered to that rigor often put that before the quality of the music, so your cd collection would suck. I think also that bands like Zao and Living Sacrifice came under fire just because they were actually good, and that stood out way too much in the CMS. I mean, if its good, there's got to be something wrong with it, right

When I left christianity at 15/16 years old, I decided 'fuck it' and started listening to music I liked, like Slayer, Slipknot, Mudvayne, SOAD, Carcass, Converge ( My dad subscribed to EMusic, and I went apeshit ), Today Is the Day, and it was like seeing in color. Sooooooooooo good. And of course through scouring Emusic I found Yattering and some other similiar bands. A year later I coast through this, with Cannibal Corpse probably being my favourite. A year or so later I join Metaltabs, and then I hear of Necrophagist, Cryptopsy, Devourment, Nile, and then Tim introduces me to the HEAVY shit, like Devourment, Disgorge, Dripping, etc.

I think there was a thread here called 'Worst Band Ever' at one time or another. I can tell you for a fact that its not Biohazard or Korn. Its Thousand Foot Krutch. HANDS DOWN.

And yes, 'JPM' is an actual industry term.

3. Old Man's Child
4. Spawn of Possession

My music career is as follows....

Slipknot->mxpx->rancid->Death->Iron maiden->the casualties->to various street punk bands->atreyu->Back to Iron Maiden->Darkest hour->Between the buried and me->In flames->Black dahlia murder->Dark Tranquillity... and from there on its just various other bands.

I've never reached this "death metal" phase everybody else is in. Sounds like noise to me haha

I'm not a brutal person.

btw: Oddly enough i got into death before ANYTHING. I've been playing their music since day 1 of picking up a guitar. Thats over 5 years ago now. At one point in time i had nearly every song on like 3 cds memorized and on lock down.

also odd how slipknot was the first band i ever got into. Not long after that i kicked that band to the curb. and now.. i don't like to bring up that subject

Hm, well, I guess it sort of started with Metallica. Then I got to hear Slayer, and those two bands were all I listened to for quite awhile. Then I got into Sepultura. After that, I started to listen alot of black metal. At this point, I also liked some death metal, but my love was at black. I pretty much learned to play guitar with black metal. But I soon got sort of tired of it, and started listening more to death metal, and thats what I`ve been into for some time now.

The Beatles - The Rolling Stones - Cream - Jimi Hendrix - Led Zeppelin - Black Sabbath
at about the same point as Jimi on the above flow chart, put the following:
Korn - Deftones - Soulfly - Sepultura - Slayer
I avoided Metallica for a long time because I had first been exposed to them by music videos from Reload and did not want to listen to anything that band had produced.

After Slayer and Sabbath had been roughly simultaneously conquered, it goes like:
Pantera - Soilent Green - Morbid Angel

By that point I'd gone to atmetal and got exposed to a whole slew of things at the same time, and so a progression like this, which was already a bit ridiculous, gets to be useless.

It was KoRn. Started listening to them in 3rd grade, they were how I got into metal so I do thank them.

Well, for me it's a very hard decision whether to choose Slipknot or Disturbed. Slipknot really pushed me into metal, but Disturbed got me into music altogether.

I'll just start with Disturbed;

Disturbed->Mudvayne-Rob Zombie-White Zombie-Slipknot

Then from slipknot;

Slipknot-Korn-SOAD-Cradle of Filth- Dimmu Borgir- Black Sabbath-Pantera-

From there, I went into metalcore, thrash, and finally here. Listening to Cannibal Corpse.

Anyway for me:

I used to listen to classic rock like YES, The Beatles, CSNY, etc. A friend of mine then showed me Opeth's Morningrise and In Flames' The Jester Race before I got into 6th grade, and I liked them a lot. From the sleeves of those CDs I discovered other bands like: "In Flames would like to thank Naglfar, Dark Tranquillity, etc." And just kinda went from there. Then I discovered the internet and The End Records, and realized they were a way to find a lot of bands.

That actually is a flaw in your argument, Kalmah. Hypocrisy has to do with lying in a particular way, one that puts you in a positiong to look down on somebody while secretly doing what they do. It's a popular misconception that it means saying that something is bad despite the fact that you used to do it, but no longer do, but it doesn't. If you have done something and found it to be bankrupt or bad, there's nothing hypocritical about saying so or criticizing the people who continue to do it. Actually, that's called being honest, which is very different from hypocrisy.

So, the fact that people change, and sometimes stop doing the things they used to do, is a flaw in your argument.

Well, since I've already posted here, I might as well make a post answering the thread question, to show some goodwill.

It was easy; a friend played Nightwish's "Oceanborn" album at a party. Intro of the first song, I was thrown, faster than any kind of music genre has ever taken hold on me.
I invested in some Nightwish and then thought to myself that heyaho, maybe there is something to this scene. I dug up some old school hard rock in my dad's collection, tried Dio out for size.
Simple as that. Iron Maiden, Nocturnal Rites, Opeth, Kreator, Down, Death, Dio, Black Sabbath, Megadeth... the intensity, the independence, the whole fucking of lot of fun.

I grew up in a house where 70's rock was played all the time, Led Zep, Hendrix, UFO, Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy, AC/DC etc I was drawn towards Sabbath, then Priest, Scorpions, Maiden(I bought Number of the Beast on the year of it's release!), Accept, and then on to the thrash, hardcore, grind, death, Industrial stuff and so on and so forth......

I played videogames when I was younger, and still do. I liked the music on the games but never cared about who they were. Years later I start getting into rock music more. The first bands I liked and knew by name were System of a Down, Linkin Park, and maybe Korn but I think I started liking them later. Then as time goes on I start getting into more music, especially after I got addicted to the internet. Then I started listening to metal on AOL and and the radio. I got into Slayer which I would probably say was the first Heavy Metal bands I actually loved. My first Heavy Metal cds purchased were "Seasons In The Abyss" by Slayer, "Domination" by Morbid Angel, "Eaten Back To Life" by Cannibal Corpse, and "A Vulgar Display of Power" by Pantera. Then I started buying & reading books on Heavy Metal. I bought more cds, especially compilation cds. I watched more metal-related TV shows and stopped listening to many of the other types of music I was listening to. Now, I just download a lot of music. Now I'm into Slayer, Krisiun, Cryptopsy, Amon Amarth, & and more bands.

I used to listen to screamo and other post-hardcore. Days after getting together with my then-bf, he showed me Children Of Bodom. I was hooked. I also picked up drums around that time. So it went...

Screamo > Children Of Bodom > Deicide/Morbid Angel > Black Metal Phase > My Dying Bride > Phase out of BM and into romantic "untr00" goth/doom metal and melodic death.

Pretty much up until I heard My Dying Bride my taste in music was controlled by someone else, and I being the smitten dickhead I was complied with his wishes to an extent. Then I went on to develop my own taste, and when that relationship broke off after a year I went on to listen to what I wanted to without some annoying prick whinning to me that "oh nooo that band sucks! You listening to At The Gates? THEY SUCK! OMG GOTH METAL IS BOHREENG! Lamb Of God are UNLISTENABLE! Kataklysm have no talent! I LIKE SLIPKNOT WAH WAH! I USED to hate Nile and Immortal but after I got to listen to them properly I LOVE THEM!!1!!11!"

I've only been listening to metal for 2 years (well, in 5 or so days will be the anniversary of that day, funny).

Well, I also listened to Hendrix, but I was a child at the time and my dad always had the last experience cd in.

I must be very lucky as well, because I never liked the bands that most of the guys here started withClassic rock..directly to sepultura and early Old Man's Child.
Sepultura's Chaos A.D being the first ever metal album I heard. And this happened before I even knew of bands like Iron Maiden, Megadeth, and White Zombie. hahahahahha.

I guess first liked OLP, Pink Floyd occasionally Rob Zombie -> then Tool/Sepultura-> next was some power metal and hardcore i.e. hatebreed and falconer, killswitch engage etc.->middle/ending jr highschool alot of Iron Maiden followed, Darkest Hour, and soon after Pantera & Megadeth -> found In Flames, Amon Amarth, God Dethroned, Deicide, Death, Slayer, Possessed, Children Of Bodom, etc ->In Highschool I soon found Absu, and then Melechesh, Stormlord etc. which I though was very extreme until I next found Iniquity, Cannibal Corpse, Cryptopsy and Exhumed -> Quo Vadis, Vile, SOP and Nile followed -> and just built up to present which would be Necrophagist, Visceral Bleeding, and the several previous ones. I'm sure it'll diversify more, I probably missed some areas. I know I enjoyed variations of black metal before death metal and similar genres.

Straight to the juicy core. Personally, I still listen to Roxette, Bon Jovi and ABBA at times... of course, I would be hard put to call them crap. At least ABBA, and even more so Björn and Benny.
As for the metal, nothing that's churning out sixteenth notes in 200 bpm could be possibly be crap.

Or...

Me and a friend were listening to Tool, Manson, Rage against the machine, Korn ect wen we were like 8, because his sister listened to it.

I kinda stopped listening to music for ages, then got into Eminem and System of a down when my sister got their cds.

Kinda went off music for a while.

Got introduced to Hatebreed and Slayer and Mudvayne I think.

My sister got a metalhead boyfriend. Got into Cradle of filth, dimmu borgir, opeth, mortician, pig destroyer, Behemoth, Coal chamber. Basically whatever hardcore we could find and download.

Started hanging out with a different friend. Started guitar, got real into Opeth.
Took drugs, got into Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Placebo, Deftones, Smashing Pumpkinsect ect.

Now I like heaps of random shit. From Dave Gilmour to Necrophagist.

Hahaha, it's funny that I was into Cannibal corpse and Spawn before Death.

Not really. I don't think MANY people listened to Death before they were into Death metal. [To me Death really are closer to thrash anyway IMO]

I was punk until I found Rich kids on LSD. They were the bridge for me between punk and metal. Too bad they didn't stay around for long. I guess they should have tried to appeal to a metal audience instead of emo-punk kids. I suggest everyone check them out at least as a novelty.

- Ride the Lightening
-Friend showed me Vai, then I heard Yngwie.
- Bought G3: Live in Denver.
- Same friend got into CoB
- I got into CoB.
- CoB lead to Trivium(I first heard them at a HoB concert)
- Heard Speed Metal Symphony, and holy crap, I loved Jason Becker...
- ... which lead to my friend showing me Megadeath(With Marty Friedman)
- Guitar teacher showed me Extreme(funk-metal)
- Now I really want some Sepultura CDs. So actually, I'm still journying through the life of metal. But my taste in so much other music is sorta getting in the way(Sigur Rós? Awesooome...)

My growth was pretty odd.

I started listening to Korn and nu metal in the 6th grade. I also listened to some pantera/slayer/Fear factory and stuff, but at the time I considered metal too abstract.

slowly I moved from nu metal to screamo and Emo. (Hey, it was highschool/post break up)

Eventually emo and screamo gave way to hardcore and metalcore.

those gave way to powermetal, which led me back to my metal roots and then shortly thereafter, all subgenres of metal, from black to...sludge :P

I grew up listening to various bands that BCMC was in at the time ( BCMC being Birmingham City Motorcycle Club ) all because my dad was a member of them.

It ranged from various things like , Hendrix and Sabbath to Aerosmith , Kiss , and GnR.

Then in the late 90's ( around 97+ ) I started to listen to Megadeth , Becker and 'Tallica alot. And I had stuck to all of them since 2004. Thats when I met a shredder ( with uber long hair ) from Manchester whilst on a project because of me being kicked out of school

He introduced me to alot of various bands :-

Iced Earth
Demons & Wizards
Cannibal Corpse
CoB
Yngwie Malmsteen ( it was his idol )
Steve Vai
Joe Satch
Nile
Rhapsody
Blind Guardian

And tons more!

Then earlier this year my girlfriend brought me the 'Inhuman Rampage' CD from a Band called Dragonforce.

And yeah.. so thats it

Goddamn, some of you guys started listening to this stuff not too long ago.

I grew up on Metallica and Slayer, my Mum is into that shit. So naturally that is what I heard all day. Got into Morbid Angel after I saw the 'Where The Slime Live' clip on a music program on TV in the early hours of the morning. That was maybe.. '96.

EDIT: I just found the tape of Where The Slime Live, heh. I taped it that night.
