Texas Chainsaw Massacre-- truly original. made for pennies and still able to scare the piss out of some punk kid who's grown up on the Scream trilogy and never seen a real horror flick.
Too bad Tobe Hooper went on to make flicks like Crocodile.
Evil Dead--
#1 One of the most over-the-top gory horror flicks ever.
#2 Direction and Cinematography. Some of the weirdest camera tricks and shots I've ever seen, and get ripped off quite often.
#3 Setting. Real shitty cabin residing practically in the middle of nowhere in the woods.
#4 Last but not least, Bruce fuckin Campbell.
Jaws - everything but the ending, I wish the entire crew on that boat had died. But, its Spielberg so you get what he wants you to get. Wait, no I'm glad Dreyfuss lived, I just wish Roy Scheider had died. I always have this wierd soft spot for Dreyfuss.
Frailty - One of the few modern flicks that does the entire genre justice. Excellent acting, direction and the whole movie just looks like its supposed to which would be, fuckin scary. it doesnt have to resort to excess gore, kind of like the next one I'm gonna mention.
American Pyscho - I saw this one before I ever picked up the book. Readers of the book know that the violence and vivid detail of the murders were offscreen for the mostpart. Of course there's numerous encounters Bateman has with victims in the books that aren't even hinted at in the movie. But, the movie still manages to portray Bateman the way I would've pictured him had I read the book first. Christian Bale IS Bateman and totally believable as a shallow, rich motherfucker with self esteem issues and not afraid to swing an axe at your head.
Exorcist blah blah blah, good for a laugh, blah blah blah
Psycho - Hitchcock, Norman, his mother. Who the fuck needs to elaborate on that one.
peace out people. i've got loads more in my head but don't need to go on and on.

i like Creepshow 1 and 2 a lot.....its sort of an underground release from steven king....(ive never heard of it til i saw it for the 1st and only time from my sisters b/f)...its a bad ass movie tho, ive seen both of em once. Theres this one part in the 2nd creepshow that this chick runs over this stalking dude a bunch of times...hes all mangeled up and shit. Hes covered in blood and his skin is all ripped up and his tounge is permanatly stuck out. So he gets up off the ground and starts making out w/ the chick that ran him over....i was scared and i laughed my ass off at the same time..........................i dont watch a whole lotta movies tho...i need to. The first phsyco was pretty cool, i think its a bit overrated but it was cool to watch it in English class.norman baits is gay

Hey Nihilist you mentioned all this
movies but you didn't say which is your favorite.
My favorite horror movie(and one of my
favorite movies in general) is Beyond by Fulci.
The main reason I like it is because it's
like a nightmare

And evil dead 1, i pissed my pants laughing, they had a 10000$ budget, they filmed it in Bruce Campel's old school...at least i thought that was funny.

I like horror films but my favourites are the Alien series, John Carpenter's The Thing, Event Horizon, Salem's Lot and, despite having the worst ending in film history, IT.
Alien doesn't need much explaining, although the fourth instalment was too contrived for my liking. The hybrid alien at the end was pretty disturbing though. All of the Alien films impart dark and claustrophobic feelings with expert skill - especially the first 3 - and is there a scarier monster in films than the Alien itself?
The Thing is simply a classic. Again, the claustrophobia is eminent and the prospect of no escape is very daunting. For the time (1981), the special effects are awesome and very imaginative and probably still compare favourably with some of todays special effects. The ending is what clinches it for me as it leaves so many questions unanswered that the mind goes into overdrive considering the possibilities. Which of the two survivors is The Thing? Does a rescue mission get sent out? Does The Thing make it to populated areas? Could my brother be a shape-shifting alien? Scary stuff indeed.
Event Horizon is quite underrated in my opinion and again the main anxiety causing theme is a feeling of being trapped and unable to escape. The idea that the ship had been to hell and was creating the rescuers worst nightmares is unsettling and to know that Lawrence Fishburne's character spends the rest of his days being unimaginabely tortured in hell is truly one of the worst mental images that one can conjur.
Salem's Lot is based on a Stephen King novel and is basically a vampire movie. However, it is far better and scarier than the standard fare. There are several disturbing scenes particularly when the child vampire taps at the window and when the main vampire (think more Nosferatu than Dracula) springs to life from it's coffin - I swear I jumped out of my seat! One of the best vampire films there is.
That leaves IT. Again, based on the Stephen King book of the same name it is a three hour feast of frights. Featuring Tim Curry as the demonic clown, Pennywise, it is a horror tour de force until the ending ruins the tension that had been so fantastically built in the preceding two and a half hours. There is something inherently freaky about clowns and when that image becomes as mangled and twisted as Pennywise then it makes for excellent viewing. I first saw this film when I was 12 years old and I still can't watch it in the dark.
The above are all good films that I would recommend to anybody.

Just FYI!!!!!
John, I have to completely agree about the Alien movies. I use to hate them because I've have nightmares about them ever since I was a little kid. I was tramatized by watching them at a very young age. I didn't realize just how much I'm effected by the whole Alien monster until I can back from fighting at sea in the middle east and I started to get adrinaline(spelling) rushes, nightmares, and had nervious scared feelings for no reason at all. I was sent to be debriefed and seen a psycologist who used hypnosis to help solve what is bothering poeple. It was so wierd how they get things to come out to the surface of your mind; things I didn't know were there and haven't thought of for years. I seen this doctor many times in the next few months and got better, but what I learned about myself was very cool.
I have a few alter egos (as everyone does) that I didn't like and was afraid of. The big one was an Alien monster from the movies ( laugh you asses off, I know it sounds funny ), and I resisted what it represented in me. It's never going to go away and because I didn't imbrace it and let it come out in my bebavior it manifested itself in my dreams and fear instead, slowly strugling to get out and becoming stonger the older I get. This is where is gets intristing, because I didn't see the connection of why this Alien ego was so strong at this point in my life, but in the Alien movies they all take place in a violent, shipbourd or closed industrial environment with tunnels, pipes, dark places, and all far away from home. All this was just like the stuff I was living with on the ship. Now add the post tramatic stress of war which can brake down a persons insulation to everyday stress, and the alien has found a weak spot to come into my life and make havoc. The solution, become the Alien, because that is what I am and fear it no more. I watched all the movies, learned everything I could about them, I even bought the Quadrilogy box set, and reminded myself that I have to let this Alien live through me and use it to my benefit sometimes or else it will fight me and I will not win in the long run. For some reason I now love the Alien movies and love the one inside me because it's mine forever. I dream about them and they don't rip me to pieces anymore... Fucked up isn't it?

Adrenaline, I think.
Yeah, films are an excellent medium for generating certain emotions in people and when they are made as well as the Alien films it's hard not to be affected by those emotions.
I saw Aliens when I was quite young (10 or 11, I think) and I could never fall asleep in my nan's big old house on stay-overs because I felt like Newt: all alone in a dark and cold environment. I couldn't get the image of an alien clinging to the ceiling just waiting to pounce out of my mind. I guess that's why films have certificate ratings, hahaha!

Aliens is a great fucking movie
and i was suprised by House of 1000 Corpses... surprised in a good way. Rob Zombie did a good job of creating a really spooky atomsphere. And the scene where their was the big shootout with the cops, and country was playing... PURE GENIOUS. And lets not forget the part when the cop is on his knee's and the one dude has the gun to his head.... its go silent and the camera slowly rotates 360 degree's around them then BAM.

That sounds OK, I might have to check that out. It appears that the erstwhile Mr Zombie has some good cinematic ideas worth investigating.

That was a great scene. Pure classic! I just hope he doesnt sell out on the next one. This one never got released until 2 years after it was supposed to and ONLY in stores... never the theater It really fucked the critics up, because it was made as big budget picture, but for poeple like us

"IT" does rule. I saw it when I was like 11 or so with a bunch of homedogs and we were all freaked out. We were in the pitch black darkness and we all thought someone was outside trying to break in. Damn clowns...

hahah yes , i know just the part in signs youre talking about
its a kids birthday party and theyre all scared and inside and after about a minute of scared kids you see this alien go walking by in broad daylight. its not particularly scary looking nor is it some kind of shock scare, its a mixutre of tension and curiosity that literally made me jump
the sixth sense scared me so badly i couldnt sleep for days after....i still wont watch it

This is kind of funny because me and a friend of mine are the only ones out of a lot of people I had talked to who actually thought it was scary, and yet lots of people on here thought it was scary.

Bon Jovi in a vampire movie. Finally a role that requires him to suck.

if we are going to get into our first experiences of horror, i remember when i was about 5 and my parents had this barbarian movie thing where the "bad guy" was some evil moster deamon thing (i havent watched it in a while as my VCR died) and towards the end not only does the barbarian guy get nailed to a big ass hunk of wood, then pull his hands off with the nails still in, latter he goes underground to fight the monster thing and hits hiding as some human, and proceeds to skin itself, i remember i was somewhat scared by that, although i dont think it has that great an effect on me.
as far as horror movies in general go, i do enjoy watching well thought out horror movies, and ocasionally watch slasher movies too, but i dont go out of my way to do it, however my younger brother does go out of his way to watch slasher movies, and the funny thing is he was the one who always got nightmares from horror movies, not me.

"The Others" was a spooky movie and I jumped so many times, much like "Signs". Very thought out too, so it kinda makes you not want to go into dark places.
Someone tell me they seen The Others besides me? It was so freaky that I can't believe I didn't mention it before.

I saw it but I was disappointed by it,
I expected it to be better.
I think Nihilist mentioned Battle Royale 2?
Does this film exist(I saw Battle Royale
by Takeshi Kitano and it was great)?

Silence of the Lambs is nice.
Event Horizon, no sleep after that one.
The Gate, nearly pissed my pants after laughing so much.
Graveyard Shift, pretty nice.
The Mangler, quite scary.
Some movie with dinosaurs, real fucking scary, it was very well made.
The Relic, awesome.

I've not seen the American ones, and I don't intend to either! Yeah, I heard about Ring 0 but I'm non-the-wiser as to where it stands in the series. *Texan accent* Those crazy Japanese bastards!

That reminds me, did anyone find Jurassic Park scary? I thought the raptors were very similar to the Alien in their psychological effect. Yeah, OK, I'm a pussy...

I find it interesting that the dude who directed Evil Dead directed the new spider mans (Bruce Campell is in the new one, too) and the director of Bad Taste went on to direct the Lord of the (Bo)rings.

BLS, it wasnt Jurassic Park, there were people experimenting with DNA and shit in some bunker, and the experimental objects (the dinosaurs) went crazy and got out of their cells etc etc etc and it was actually pretty scary.

I cant believe i had forgot... the first time i saw that movie i was at the beach in a condo. I must have been about 5. No one was "home" at the moment so i was watching tv by myself. When i saw the part where the clown was doing the shadow puppets i freaked out. i guess it was just how they looked and the fact that they were killer
