Ta & snuggles in advance,

My friend had Linux on his computer, and I tried it out once and it was hard as fuck to use... but he knows loads about computers anyways so it's probably easy for him. And also he had trouble getting drivers for certain things, his modem I think caused alot of problems. I imagine if you can get it up and running and get used to it, then it should be really good because there is no need for anti-virus software, and the comp will run alot faster because it's less graphics based and such. Have a quick search on the net too, i'm pretty sure there are loads of websites with tutorials about it.

Im sure it wound just be something you'd have to get used to. Especially if you had only ever used windows for years

Yup! Linux is a great platform to use. I would recommend getting a newer version of Redhat. It's been redefined with a GUI similar to the way windows looks. You might run into compatibility problems. Since windows is so widely supported; therefore, not as many developers port shit over to the linux/unix environment, but anything fairly popular will be available. Linux is a very command driven operating system. Very stable, very good on resources, very secure, just a higher bit of a learning curve to it.

Its not all its cracked up to be to be honest... i used it a little, but it was just frustrating- windows runs perfectly fine if you don't install shit on it like gamespy etc. Linux is overrated, but 1tz cO0l 4 t3h l33t h4><0rz!!!11

Chances are too, that the unknown brand (but loyal) peripheral that you use won't be supported either, so you'll have to do without your scanner etc.

It's not really popular at home. Linux is widely used to run servers though, as it said to be cheaper (well, it is free), more stable, faster, more secure, and easier to use (for people who run those servers, not the average joe) than Windows/Mac based servers.

Get fucked. 'course it is. I ran Red Hat dual booted with various versions of Windows for freakin' years. I really only used different distros of Linux for the dev kits that came with them, as I was doing a C++/Java (no, not script) course at University. But they're a bit of fun to fuck around with. Unforunately I was using a HCF 56k modem at the time and the only Linux drivers available to the public without PAYING were 14.4k drivers. So needless to say, I stayed offline.
