uuh, I have to get "employment history" and a "steady income." My parents say that gigging on weekends isn't goingto cut it because that is not "employment history." I teach some on my own but that doesnt count either. All the music shops aren't hiring guitar or violin teachers, so that doesn't help. I can't work a job I don't like.... and music is about all I like. I have to find one by the end of the weekend though, so what do yall suggest?

I suggest you pull in the smug attitude and get into the real world where sometimes you have to scrub some dishes, mop some floors, and replace a few mints in the urinals. That doesn't mean you'll do it forever, but you need to get some job experience. You can use your music teaching as volunteer work and your gigs as hobby unless you got paid for it. Then it could be part time.

How old are you anyways? If you're old enough to get a job working in a hotel that's a lot of fun and you can meet some interesting people sometimes. I did for 5 1/2 years starting in the kitchen as a dishwasher and moved to all the other departments except maintenance and I even helped them out on occasion. The pay wasn't bad for starting either.

You can still do something with music while you've got a job doing something else. In the future you may get into that area like you want to. Good luck to you.

School leavers at 16 tend to start as office juniors, burger flippers or if they're lucky they'll gain an apprenticeship in plumbing, joinery or another craft of that ilk. All for minimum wage. University graduates generally start higher on the employment scale but are exploited in other ways.

I'd suggest getting an office job. It's boring, it's just as low paid as the other options but you won't have to deal with customers who patronise you and think they're better than you because you don't have a star on your name tag. In an office, that responsibility falls to management which is altogether more reasonable since they will in fact be better than you unless they are a prime example of the Peter Principle.

Don't forget to stick it out. You'll need at least 6 months experience in order for a reference to be even held in the merest regard. Nobody likes high staff turnover as it's expensive to keep employing staff to replace leavers. My boss has a charge out rate of £100. Say that there are 10 applicants for a position at the firm and it takes an hour to interview each one. That's £1,000 in lost revenue (known as an opportunity cost) just to interview the candidates for a job that pays £5,850 per year (minimum wage for a 16 year old in the UK is £3/hr and the average working hours per week is 37.5). So basically, you're not even going to be considered for interview if you have a long list of employments lasting no longer than two months. Unless they're desperate, in which case you're lucky and they're unlucky.

At the end of the day, you're going to have to muck it out with the rest of the pigs in the yard but just remember: we're all going to be sizzling on somebody's plate one day. And that is true.

OP, do you have any qualifications to be either a teacher, let alone a music teacher? Some sort of music degree will cover that, but to be a teacher/lecturer you need further degrees, I do believe. This will be, imo, the steadiest way to make a living off music. Could be argued its production etc, but the most likeliest is as a teacher. There is always demand, just ensure you are qualified.

nah, that and box office are they two spots i never got to work, aside from managing. i did all the concession jobs, i did everything in the usher position, cleaning bathrooms, cleaning theaters, tearing tickets, but my favorite jobs, overall, were doing theater checks, you go in, check the audience, no cameras or sex, check the screen to make sure the picture is good, and sit for a couple minutes watching the movie, that and running in concession, just because it was a busy job, i got bored standing around, so i would get popcorn for the cashiers, fill sodas, whatever they needed, got to be pretty close to the older concession ladies, flirt with them a little and you get whatever you want.

if you live in a city, be a waiter for a non chain corporate restaurant, a bike messenger, drive a cab<something i always wanted to do>, record shops are usually oligarchic and hard to get but seems real cool, two of my bandmates work in a record store, one is the boss of the other which is pretty cool. tattoo or piercing apprentice<if you got the skills>, guitar center<if you live in the US>, is about the only chain store id work for because thier track record for raises and shit is pretty good, i know a kid when i was in high school become a district manager making 35K when he was 18<this was like 10 years ago>

Government jobs that aren't military are usually tough to get, and aren't recommended if you don't want a career. But, if you get one, get in the post office. I'd definitely work there. They have enough trouble keeping people they pay well and require very little.
