Learning finnish...
OK, so I want to learn to speak finnish, but all the sites I've been to so far are pay to learn sites, and I can't afford to spend the money to buy the materials and cd's, etc. So my question is, are there any people here who could teach me some basic stuff and/or are there any free sites where I can learn finnish? Thanks

Don't fucking learn Finnish. You're not gr1m or tr00 by doing so. It is an irrational, futile attempt for yourself. I give it a good 90% chance you will quit within a month.

pandemonium - what the fuck? you started a thread about learning swedish and norwegian only a few months ago. dont be a fucking prick. never discourage someone from learning about a language, even if he only spends a few months on it and moves on he still took the time to develop his mind and learn a little about a different culture. you arent grim and true by learning german either, and youre the one who wanted to learn norwegian which us undeinably the gr1mmest language in the metal community.
now to the topic at hand, here are the best free sites on the web
dictionary
http://www.edu.fi/oppimateriaalit/y...mea/sanasto.htm
an explanation of the language
http://virtual.finland.fi/netcomm/n...intNWSAID=25832
the best, hands down, site for learning a foreign language ive ever seen. i wish there was a danish equivalent

I'm not being a "fucking prick". His time would be spent better on another language. I'm only trying to dissuade him from Finnish because it's highly impractical to learn unless he's looking to become a resident of the land. It's also highly difficult.
Since when was I trying to be grim by learning German or Norwegian? Where the fuck did you get that from? German isn't even a "gr1m" language; I'm studying it in school, as a MINOR, and I have plans to live there (in Germany). I'll be living there in September for a year. I also have plans to stop in Norway before I go to Germany again, so that's why I want to know basic Norwegian. My reasons are rational. Also, I'm obsessed with language. I'm going to do Spanish next -not remotely a gr1m language.

No, it's not to be grim or brutal. It's one of the few languages I would like to learn. I had to learn spanish in school and it just wasn't anything special. I have a soft spot for nothern european languages. I have no goal on becoming 100% fluent. I just want to be able to learn some basic grammar usage and words and stuff.

Pandemonium, spanish shouldn't be too hard for you to learn, although compared to French there are many more exceptions to rules, and spanish for some reason isn't as soothing or beautiful as other european languages.

I want to learn Spanish mostly because it's extremely cheap to live in South America, in case I ever get in a tight spot, or just want a change.
I didn't mean to be an asshole. I'm just suggesting you look towards another language instead of the Fracas Finnish.

There's also the Kai guy who has recently appeared, I don't know if that's who you mean, Demon.
Look in my Sonata Arctica thread in bands. There is a video of the band speaking Finnish.

kai latvala is actually a brit living abroad. quite an interesting fellow
the oldman is always quite polite and friendly in helping me with my stupid finnish questions
if any of you have studied latin at all and gotten to an eleveated level youll be delighted with finnish.finnish is basically latin with different vocabulary
and its really not that hard to learn if you are meticulous. all languages have their difficult aspects and their easy aspects

All the northern European languages shouldn't be too hard to learn if you already know your English pretty well. If you're in touch with archaisms in English, it should be even easier. But Finnish... I think you're up for a challenge. Good luck though.

Finnish, Hungarian, Norwegian, Russian, Romanian, Serbian, Estonian and Vod are all Uralic languages. The name comes from the origin within the ural mountains. The largest groups are Finnish, Hungarian and Estonian. Finnish has the same number of grammatical cases as Latin, hence the similiarities between the two. The "evil" sound of the Uralic languages comes from Palatization, a secondary pronunciation, where the tongue is tense and adds consonants to the pronunciation.

Dude... I dunno what your source is, but Norwegian, Russian, Romanian and Serbian are all undeniably Indo-European languages and have nothing more to do with the Finno-Ugric group (to be more specific than sheer Uralic) than perhaps certain loan words (more on the giving end than the receiving end from what I gather).

Nope, Russian is a Slavonic language. By the 10th century, there were three Slavonic language groups: Western, Southern and Eastern. Eastern slavonic gave birth to today's languages of Ukranian, Belorussian and Russian, however all three language groups retained many common features such as vocabulary and grammar, so they were able to be united by a common alphabet (cyrillic) a bit later on.
Polish derives from the Western Slavonic group, and is an exception (doesn't use cyrillic) along with Czech, Slovakian, and the Baltic languages of Latvian and Lithuanian, a sub-group of it's own under the "Slavic tree".

latin has 7 cases with about 40 usages. nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, ablative, vocative and locative. the cases (endings on a noun) are chosen according to what the USAGE will be. each case has several usages. genitive has partitive (regarding number) possession (his toga) etc. this is where the difference between finnish and latin comes in. the finns do not have usages, they just have cases. such as inessive, etc. its kind of like they chopped down a branch off the language tree and now have many more stubs.
i speak with 98% assurance regarding latin. im in college latin now. the finnish is only what i've taught myself

Finno-Urgic is a subfamily of the Uralic languages. The other is Samoyedic. Samoyedic is your "indo-European". When I say Russian, I mean the language Vod. Votic originally comprised several dialects: Western, Eastern, Kukkusi and Latvian. It became extinct under Soviet rule.

I'm well aware that Samoyedic is the other branch of Uralic, but Indo-European is of a class that matches Uralic, it is not a sub-branch of anything (rationally speaking). I said Finno-Ugric, because it's more specific than Uralic, even though it works just as well. I just felt like getting the Samoyedic bit out of the picture.
In your list of Uralic languages, you had Russian standing alone and Vod standing alone. You also listed Serbian, Norwegian and Romanian, which are independant from the Uralic family completely.
Anyhow, if you are interesting in refering to the Uralic family in a discussion, I suggest you read up the basics of the Indo-European family.
I feel kind of strange explaining the disposition of all these languages, while not being able to speak anything from the Uralic branch, while some of you are able to. Maybe I should try Finnish too, this 22 cases thing sounds interesting.

Np... But it should be noted that the slavonic tree belongs to the indo-european megatree, just to make things clear in case Kai considers both of our posts, which in this case, aren't in conflict with eachother.

22 cases isn't interesting, its frustrating. the ends of words become quite, quite, quite long. "in my house, too" can be said with one word. i forget how to do it, but its pretty funny. also, the suomi word for "twenty first" is obscenely long

The longest finnish word has about 100 letters
I can't remember how to write it. Some professor made that.
Anyway, I'm not a good teacher, but you can PM me if you wan't to ask something.
Edit: The longest finnish word:
"kumarreksituteskenteleentuvaisehkollaismaisekkuudellisenneskenteluttelemattomammuuksissans akkaankopahan"
103 letters.

There's only one word as a base, 'kumartaa,' which means, 'to bow.' All those other bits are just little additions and postpositions that are not independent words in Finnish.
