I just read about it. Didn't realise it was a remake of Infernal Affairs, though i'm not the only one - 'Scorsese said he was unaware of the original trilogy when he read the script in late 2003.'
It looks promising though.

haha, yeah, I forgot to mention that. If Mark Wahlberg is in it, it HAS to be good.
It's a bit of a strange cast you have to admit.

i think we rented it once but i either wasn't around when we watched it, or had too much of the premovie festivities and don't remember seeing it.
just caught bits and pieces of four rooms earlier..roommate was watching it. that one is pretty funny. i love the scene with antonio banderes and his bastardly children!

Oh. It comes out here Friday, too, but I thought films were usually released in America prior to they are released in Europe?

Oh yeah I'm sure Seeing as Hollywood has been pilfering Asian cinema since the dawn of time I doubt very much he wasn't aware of it! After the success of the remake of The Ring and other Japanese horrors he would have been stupid not to have remade this Hong Kong classic for audiences to lazy to explore and watch a foreign language film! Philistines! Watch Infernal Affairs instead! Talking of which I have Infernal Affairs 2 still to watch

In this case, the earliest non-festival release seems to be Wednesday. Some big films are released simultaneously around the globe.

Oh, I should note that Infernal Affairs is not that great or original of a movie and I wouldn't be surprised if The Departed is better.
I also wouldn't be surprised if Scorsese actually didn't know, seeing as he's not really known for keeping up with all the politics of the Hollywood industry, or, for that matter, of films made much later than those that first enthralled him. Now, most of the people financing the film are probably that cynical, but Scorsese, whatever else might be true of him, tends to make the movies he wants to make because he wants to make them.

I saw Jackass 2 last Friday. Very very nasty and hard to watch but you sure laugh a lot. The whole "taxi driver" thing really sucked for the one getting pranked though... I mean wow. And Bam cries? That's unfortunate but interesting to see.

I was thinking about getting the DOOM movie.... I'm not now. I read about it on wikipedia, and..... the producers and everyone involved couldn't butcher it anymore than they had if they tried. IF they had a few more fucking idiots working on the film, they could make it worse.
It sounded nothing like the DOOM I remember playing; demons spawning from hell, kill every marine and scientist, leaving you alive to fend for yourself, you literally go through hell and prove too much for them, and you end up on Earth. This is a total rip. Genetic Mutation is so old.
Anyone think the same thoughts?

You really expect it to be the least bit good or faithful? And who the fuck cares? The video game Doom would make a really shitty movie and the plot in these things don't matter, the cinematic nature of the effects do. So why give a shit?
On the other hand, finally saw Brick and, aside from the mediocre editing, it ruled your collective mothers. For those who don't know, it's a noir movie (kinda a loving tribute to Dashiell Hammett, a la Miller's Crossing) set in the world of a high school movie, with the hallmarks of the two genres overlapping more or less perfectly in the process. It should give the smart among your intellectual wood. Plus, the dialogue is good.

Yeah, but the least they could have done was stick with the original "Storyline" of DOOM; Scientist experimenting with teleporting gateways on the MArs moons and in doing so allowing Hell to exit the gateways, demons and zombies walking out. Not intellectual, but still would be cooler than what they had in the movie.
And the Rock should get out of doing movies. Scorpion King was bad enough.

Story really, really, really doesn't matter. What matters is if it's viscerally and visually exhilerating. When The Rock is involved and, by necessity, Vince McMahon is one of the film's producers, you can be sure that this will not be the case.
To be honest, if you're going to have gateways to hell and other arcane forces in a film, it'd better be done by an intelligent director who understands the devil. This is why The Ninth Gate is one of the best of this type. I'd rather a dumb summer movie have a dumb by-the-numbers plot. It's just an excuse for some visuals anyway.
Also, you can delete the parts of a quote you don't intend to respond to.

Watched Mrs Henderson Presents. 'Dame' Judi Dench and Bob Hoskins and a damn fine selection of cheeky nudity! Hurrah (Would like to point out that Bob and Judi weren't the nudes I was cheering!) Not a bad little brit film.
Also watched Reform School Girls. Yep, you read it right! It stars Wendy O Williams(for those that don't know her she was the singer with the Plasmatics before going solo. Famous for just wearing black sticky tape over her bra bullets and dueting with Lemmy on 'Stand By Your Man'. Which insulted Fast Eddies sense of taste so much he quit Motorhead!!) This film will insult your sense of taste......maybe.....ok the story is arse, acting is shite and cliched and the script is terrible. In fact it's like watching a 95 minute Motley Crue video because if the girls aren't fighting each other there either in the showers together or parading around in lacey undies! Very easy on the eye! I would recommend watching it on mute and enjoy the visuals!!

just watched dead alive last night. i read somewhere (i think) that it was basically a remake of an older ...possibly european movie. either way it was alright...plenty of gore, some decent laughs (not sure if that was the intent though) some not so great claymation....all in all i give it two or so stars out of five.
the scene where hes running around hacking up zombies with a lawn mower kicks ass hahaha. blood and guts spraying all over the place.

I was going to see this last night, but we arrived 20 minutes before the last showing started and about 300 people were in line..most likely to see the same movie.

Dead Alive is the US title. It's called 'Braindead' in the rest of the world. Same movie different title that's all. It's not European but New Zealand, it's directed by Peter Jackson of all people!

My friend's seen it and says it's remarkably better-directed (no surprise; the original is not an exemplary Hong Kong film). But, then again, he was probably the only person I know who was angry about Scorsese adapting Infernal Affairs not because he thought it was another case of a brilliant foreign film getting dumbed down by an American production for American audiences, but rather because he thought the original really wasn't anything special, the latter sentiment being one with which I am in agreement. I'll give my own appraisal in a few days, but, although I'm harsher on Scorsese than my friend, I doubt very much that it won't be a much better made film. I'm sure there are people who'll disagree, but I doubt they really needed to see the film to decide anyway.
He also said that the story was, with only a handful of changes, identical, moreso than he was expecting. However, to call it a copy is to reduce films to plots, which makes me wonder why you'd bother to watch one when the screenplays are available.

i actually thought grudge 2 it was pretty good
its by no means the reimagining of horror or a classic, but a fun movie to waste a day at seeing in the theater
plenty of "shit your pants" jump moments means that its gonna be pretty shitty on dvd but i thought it worked great for the theater
i only saw parts of grudge 1 but what i saw of it looked like shit, this one is a lot more entertaining imo
although beware, it is extremely cheesy

Practice for the SATs:
Black Pot :: Black Kettle
Requiem :: ______
A. The Grudge
B. Smegma
C. Beguine
D. Lament
Saw Art School Confidential earlier. So much potential in the construnction squandered by the execution. I'm not even sure I could say it tried something interesting, though it certainly wanted to try something pretty interesting. Nothing worse than seeing a smart idea turn dumb.

Just watched Evil Aliens. A low, low budget splat stick British horror flick.
Loads of in-jokes and pastiches on genre classics like Braindead, Evil Dead and Texas Chainsaw. Tons of blood and offal, zombies and lady alien fun bags! The scream queen was a male! Most enjoyable in a nerdy horror film fan kinda way
Also watched Slither, which was alright I suppose but not a classic.

Justsaw a great film called "Brotherhood", it's a Korean film about the Korean war made in 2004, absolutely fantastic and brilliantly filmed, if you like war films I HIGHLY recommend it!

holy fucking fug
i just watched x-men 3
its like a forced communion of days of our lives and anything hanna barbara with the budget and visual effects of our beloved missle defense system combined with the occupation of two middle eastern countries.
im totally ignorant of the x-men too, i loved the cartoon show from years ago but could never follow it due to constant time changes and such. so my angle is most from a perspective of the movie, the trilogy itself and not how it relates to any given series.
so after watching it the next day i threw it in with commentaries and guess who........the fucking same guy who did red dragon.
the commentaries pretty much said it all
-director,writers,everyone werent fans of the comic and dont know shit, they have only a academic understanding by researching just enough to produce something on paper that a movie can vaguely be based around. the lack of solid script produced this "hashed out" feeling during takes where everything is so dumbed downed and forcably spoonfed as if the audence was expected to be 6 year olds. if they left stuff open ended and unexplained it would actually be a good strategy for people to buy the comics out of curiosity. this is not to mention the success of this trilogy ender behemoth could catapult individual stories based on the minor characters and cast.
-directors and writers commentary descend into ragging on thier own film in an awkward condescending way as if the never really respected the project, lampooning yourself is one thing if it a matter of slight plot flaws and budget constraints or the fact that some visual stuff is way above the paygrade from comic to cgi, but c'mon "pheonix" and all her powers became the 800 pound gorilla in the room that pretty much kill any resemblence of a climax. its like having ivan drago of rocky 4 not throw a punch and just lay down in the ring. ironically they went on to say its "her story"
-acting as if the film was an impossible goal in producing a intriging action movie with character devolpment. saying things like "well i had to give attention to 16 main characters and make it work" and "well yeah, we obviously had to condense blah, blah, blah" DONT TAKE THE FUCKING FILM THEN. the film ender is about resolution, not introducing more heads to an already bloated cast.
-90210 character development, soap opera schoolyard crushes, PUPPY DOGS AND ICE CREAM LOVE. i was forced as a child to watch "day of our lives" during the 80s,i have nearly a decade of childhood of this show stamped irremovable from my brains, and i can tell you the character interplay was pretty fucking on par with that shit. the movie is mostly a series of <completely not>witty one liners and cliche catch phrases. im supprised i didnt see john rambo and arnold running around in the background.
-Ratner constantly couldnt source what happens in the previous 2 films, couldnt recall events and character lines. he was constantly corrected by the writers.
-too many omnipotent characters around for any of the story to work.
i could go on man......its a fucking train wreck that make the previous 2 look like hamlet

God Damnit, now I really don't have any excuse for not seeing the Departed yet. Everyone has seen it, and they all say it's great... wtf is wrong with me?! Well I was just sent a free copy of Little Miss Sunshine, so that'll keep me busy movie-wise.

Haha I don't know how many times this has been brought up, but damnit that's a good movie. I own it, and the funniest thing ever is in the special features, they tried to make a TV version of the scene when they stumble home drunk and blare electro music, when Pete comes downstairs yelling "It's 4 o'clock in the fucking morning and I have to be at fucking work in 4 fucking hours.." ect, but they replace fuck with funk.

A great movie! Have you seen the extras on Land of the Dead? Simon Pegg and his mate actually appear in the film as zombies. Mr Romero liked Shaun of the Dead so much he invited them over as extras!

Yeah, I own that, I love the behind the scenes in every dvd. They were the zombies chained up, whom you could get your pictures taken with.
I just watched Hard Candy, it was pretty fucked up. I don't really know if I liked it though.

Saw The Departed. Pretty good, but without a center. Seems like Scorsese lost control at some point and couldn't make himself work consistently. Too bad.
You didn't expect humor in a film populated by Irishmen from Boston? You weren't tipped off that there was going to be humor when the title sequence included a Dropkick Murphys song? Huh.
Also saw Flags of our Fathers. Starts out amazing and is great for a while, until the last 40 or so minutes, when it goes from a cynical examination of war (paralleled by a cynical examination of filmmaking: the central story is about how an image gets hijacked by a national narrative in a way that gets the job done but robs us of the richness and truth) to a bunch of sentimental dross. Real shame. It's been a while since we've had a good war movie, though the last intelligent WWII movie was set in the Pacific Theater. Makes it an even bigger shame.

Flags of Our Fathers is incredible. Apparently some war veterans watched it and said it's very well done and realistic. It's so god damn sad though, but then again I didn't expect it too be very happy. PST is right about it kinda losing it's main point in the last 40 minutes though.
And Mr. Eastwood did the score?! Damn, I was impressed. Great themes in the movie.

How does it compare to the first one? I thought the first one was pretty good, haven't seen the second.

hah yea that movie kicks ass... WHEAS THE MONEY LEBOWSKI!?!?!?
watched in cold blood last night. its from 62 i think...its pretty badass though. b&w film about two guys that get some tip from a guy in jail about some rich farmer. they go out to do a simple robbery of some farm family and wind up in a lot of shit. based on true events...probably more so than movies these days that claim the same thing. also for the sixties...it was a pretty graphic film. tame by todays standards..but regardless, i'd watch it again for sure.

One Hour Photo's not creative, rather fairly derivative, and had its best bits bleached out by Hollywood test screenings and focus groups. Gay.
In Cold Blood has some of the best cinematography, ever, and Robert Blake rules in it. In the past year, two films have come out about the writing of that book, one in theaters right now. Cool stuff, though hopefully we'll never have to have it told to us again.
Checked Catch-22 out the other day. It rules. Watch it.

It's underwatched because it basically treats war in practice as something completely without honor and motivated primarily by stupidity and selfishness, and does so with such skill that you can't help being convinced by it. Because nobody wants to think of war in this way, nobody wants to watch it, and nobody gets convinced. Catch-22.
I would say nay to Saw III, but I'd say nay to the entire series. The people involved don't play the game well enough and don't offer anything else to compensate. Boring shit with obvious style and twists (and moves like that only exist to set up the twist, so it's not trivial that the twist is obvious to anybody with any familiarity with the genre).

Catch 22 is an incredible film and yep people don't want to watch it because of how it portrays war, just about everybody is on the make. Watched it in my early teens and only got chance to watch it again for a 2nd time about 2 years ago. I think I'm due another outing of it very soon!!
Found the first Saw movie very contrived and predictable, with it's 'can be seen for miles' plot twists. I'm just fed up of these films with uber slick elaborate over the top serial killers and their batman baddie antics and taunting of the 'I'm under pressure and on a mission to right the wrongs of a case 15 years ago where a small child/partner died' cops, that seem to occupy the cast in all these flicks. Yawn yawn!

Just saw House of Flying Daggers. Not bad, but not good either. The martial arts stuff was so boring that they should've hired a new choreographer.

I've got that on DVD, i think i got about half way through - and got bored, i still haven't watched it all the way through. I tell you what is a good martial arts based film; Ong Bak. Its really impressive because they don't use special effects and wires, proper good stuff

Problem wasn't the choreography. Problem was the camera. Virtually anything can appear to be engaging if the camera's right. So the real problem was probably that they thought that the way to make a martial arts sequence in a film more exciting is to fiddle with the choreography. Also that Yimou didn't try to get Chris Doyle back as the cinematographer didn't help. Lots of flat, beautiful images, which just aren't enough.

The early HellRaiser movies were pretty decent. The new ones suck pretty bad because you've seen it all before and the budget for the movies has to be really low. Cry Wolf was pretty damn good considering the low budget they had to deal with. A good war movie too me would have to be Tiger Land. The story line flowed smoothly.
The worst movie I've watched here recently has to be Silent Hill.

The thing is we've had wire work and such like chucked at us so much over the past few years it's no longer fresh, new and exciting. After Iron Monkey and Crouching Tiger people tired of seeing fudal warlords scurrying up and swaying in the brow of a bamboo tree. Add that Hollywood has taken it's pound of flesh.
But it's not the greatest film but it does have some nice set pieces and touches.

Ong Bak is fantastic. Some amazing martial arts and stunts in there.

Also that Yimou didn't try to get Chris Doyle back as the cinematographer didn't help. Lots of flat, beautiful images, which just aren't enough.

Yeah, I guess camera work can play just as large a part as the moves themselves.

Hellraiser 1 was terrible in my opinion. And Hellraiser 3 was just funny.

Hellraiser 1 definately did suck. Hellraiser 2 was pretty fucking good though to say the least. i mean that insane asylum alone is pretty fucking ... twisted. Number 3 was eh.. pretty decient, and i actually liked number 4. I haven't seen the 5th one... and i donot' knw if i ever will, the fact that there is even a 5th one surprises me cause its completely ended in #4. (until i see the 5th one and see why it continues on)

Number 5 is about some detective trying to fight off pinhead. Number 6 is about some guy who dies and pinhead mess's with him making him think his still alive.....Its basically the same storyline as the others. They also have like 2 more after those i belive. Never watched them...it's to sad ruining a damn good movie with a thousand series.
