When did I say Lord of the Rings was a standard for good storylines? I just said that Snatch was empty visual fluff.
Nothing of what he said made it seem that Gummo or Eraserhead would be up his alley.

wrong. i think its funny. dulled by crap? the movie i saw before this was In the Name of the Father, and i thought it was great. if you think that one is crap too, you can still shove your rationalization up your ass. it would hold more truth there, as its pure shit.

So, you've seen a reasonably good, though cloyingly sentimental, melodrama, and that somehow makes your opinion on a comedy more justified? Is that logic? Both movies ask you to dumb yourself down to be entertained; one justifies it with very good acting and a nice political moral, the other with some lame jokes and the everyman moral that always makes comedies 'okay.' I'm not impressed or swayed by your liking either one, nor am I sure why the one pertains to the other. But I guess that's the way your mind works.

no offense pstie...but you aren't siskel and ebert incarnate. people like all kinds of movies, and they don't all have to be hipster/obscure films. for the amount of shit i've heard you talk about almost every movie people have posted, i'd sure love to see you take a crack at making a film. just because you don't like a movie, doesn't mean its crap. your opinion is not necessarily fact...try to remember that. sure, there are plenty of times when i have agreed with things..but sometimes i think you're a bit too on the offensive. instead of telling people they are idiots and have poor taste etc. try just saying why you don't like the movie. no need to piss all over everyones movie tastes.

I posted a while back about a film called Audition (pretty disturbing horror film), directed by Takashi Miike. I watched another one of his films tonight, called Gozu. Hilariously bizarre.
Features: Yakuza gangs, small dog homicide, a cow demon, lactating titties, cotchless panties and a man witha ladle up his arse. Quality viewing.

I'm a war movie fan above all genres and Flags of Our Fathers was definitely worth my viewing.

You'd be surprised how much of what I like isn't obscure or hipsterish. Something can be popular without having been watered down to achieve popularity. It's just ironic that people who pride themselves on obscure listening habits based on a higher than average standard of quality come here raving about the filmic equivalent of Britney Spears.
And I have made a movie. I've talked about it in this thread. I'm making another right now. So I guess that means I can shit on all the movies I feel like, because my opinion is magically validated by the fact that I know how to use a camera.
Flags of Our Fathers was a funny case for me, because it was so great in so many ways, up until the third act, where Paul Haggis and posturing sentimentality took over. Clint's too good to let that hack throw out his exploitative tricks all over his movies, and I hope he realizes it.
If you want some good Miike, check out Visitor Q and Happiness of the Katikuris (I'm assuming everybody's seen Ichi the Killer, but if not, check that out too). Actually, I've honestly yet to see something from him I didn't like, though something like Dead or Alive is mostly fun, except for the opening sequence and the ending confrontation, only if you want to play a genre-bending game where the joke is how the formula is not deviated from or commented on in any way whatsoever.
Just re-saw Shivers at a friend's house. I forgot how effective the framing in that movie is.

maybe so..its just that i'd say a great deal of your posts in this thread read like this "oh that movie sucks, why do you like this shit?/your taste is bad/you only like that because blah blah blah/so and so director is horrible/etc. on top of that, i have pretty much only seen you post about movies that are not your regular movies that show in every or most theaters. always some offbeat thing, which makes me think hipster points... i've seen so many do it with movies and music...

i think you know as well as i how meaningless this statement is. knowledge of a video camera does not mean you have good style or taste and therefor are a definitive critic of others attempts at the same. i'll watch your films if you have them available for viewing. i think you have some great insight and figure it would be worth checking out. sometimes i just think you get a bit ahead of yourself.
i haven't seen ichi the killer. have only heard of it. i'll check the description and probably add it to my queue with netflix.

I know that sarcasm in writing isn't the easiest thing to pick up on, but I'd have thought that it was pretty clear here, especially since it was your claim that my opinion was somehow less valid because I hadn't made a movie. I don't think making a movie makes my opinion more valid at all, but if you want to set that up as some kind of obstacle to me talking shit, I'll knock it down.
That said, the movie I've made is roughly the equivalent of a band's first demo, especially if it's a band with fewer members than positions (I was pretty much everything but an actor), and some of the members aren't really musicians (there's probably only one real actress in the whole thing), so don't expect it to be particularly good. It isn't. Nevertheless, I'm proud of it and will send you a copy if you want one.
I don't see how my posts saying I liked Casino Royale, Rocky Balboa, both Pirates of the Carribean, Children of Men, Deja Vu, or Flags of Our Fathers can be construed as me rejecting mainstream fare for obscure titles simply because they're obscure. And I don't see me throwing out more obscure titles than anybody talking about all the Japanese martial arts they watch. And I'm pretty sure I rejected the offbeat hipster favorite of Little Miss Sunshine, which was ripe for 'I'm so different because I like this movie' bullshit. But think what you want to as you listen to music nobody you pass on the street's ever heard of.

no.

of my whole life, id have trouble remembering even 10 movies i really didnt like. so, assuming half of all movies suck, there is a 50/50 chance that you arnt going to like a movie i mention, here. looks like i could either
1. stop posting about movies ive just seen, and liked.
2. pretend i think all movies suck, and post that. (risk free!)
3. or, maybe, you could stop telling people that the movies they like, suck, before proceeding to tell them why they shouldnt like it, based on your opinions and standards.
edit: and above, that wasnt ironic. tell me who, here, prides their obscure music taste? ive said i had pride in my large cd collection, but i didnt mention about whats in it, as that wouldnt mean much with how dominant non-melodic death is, at this site. yes yes, i know you didnt directly quote me on that. the thing is, you probably dont know who prides their music taste, so how do you know that the people, you say have a movie equivilant to britney spears, are the same ones you are assuming have this pride? you dont know, and thus, the quote is irrelevant.

Obviously you can have and post your opinion. I can do the same. If we've both seen the same movie, we can both have and post our opinions about the same movie, even if they conflict. I don't deny you that opportunity - I don't even try to make you change your opinion - so why oh why would you want to stop me from having and posting my opinion? So, I'll go for the fourth option:
4. You can continue posting about movies you like, I can continue commenting on them, and you can act like an adult about it.
But, if need be, we can continue with the fifth:
5. You can continue posting about movies you like, I can continue commenting about them, and you can act like a child and whine about how mean I am.
In any case, there are more options than either of us pretending not to have opinions to accommodate the other. Why you didn't see them while whining about somebody trying to invalidate your opinions is a mystery to me, but it might be because you assign too much of what your own motivations would be to my behavior. I don't give a shit if you like a manufactured comedy, just as I wouldn't give a shit if you liked Britney Spears, but I'll be damned if I stop myself from saying it's a manufactured, glossy piece of shit just because you can't fathom disagreement.

its not that i didnt see that i could stop posting in here, and avoid it all-together. its that i wanted to continue posting in here, without you shitting on it. why you cant reduce the amount of shitting, as put differently by Graf, is a mystery to me. option 6: id rather not post in here. but you go ahead and have your fun, throwing shit like a monkey.

Aww, he can't take contrary opinions. They make him uncomfortable. That's so sad. Why should I have to like something to say anything about it? Think about that. If you can start a hissy fit because I saw a movie you liked and thought it sucked, I can say that a movie is studio-manufactured bullshit. I usually type around a sentence about why I thought a movie was bad, and maybe one about why it was nevertheless somewhat successful, and if you can't take that you've got a serious problem. Keep in mind that you're the first person to get personal here, and the first person to bring up your taste in movies. If you invite me to talk about something, don't get pissy because you don't like what I said.

it wasnt about whether or not i can take it. i was trying to get you to talk less shit about what other people like. its, obviously not going to work, because you have the attitude of a stubborn child, and the ego of a rap millionaire.

I took your advice and got this one from the video rental place, I just finished watching it. That was a pretty extreme piece of cinema.
For a while I wasn't really enjoying it too much, but then I started to get into it a bit more, and the last half an hour was gold. The bit where he's fucking the corpse, which then starts discharging shit, and rigor mortis sets in and he can't get his cock out of it was so funny in such a horrible way, but even better was vinegar bath with hard drugs that followed.
Lots of lactation again (as with Gozu), and we had a microphone up the arse instead of a ladle. This Miike chap is a strange one, but these films are really very entertaining in a unique way.
Timedragon, do you have any toys left to throw out of your pram? Get over it. This is MT, people take the piss, people are cunts. This isn't real life. Have a wank, you'll feel much better.

Had something longer, but now it's just this: You take somebody disliking something you dislike as a personal insult. That is egomania, because you take things that aren't really related to you except in your mind as part of your being. You then proceed to whine and try to deny me the opportunity to voice my opinion. That is childish, because, well, it just self-evidently is. Then you call me a childish egomaniac. Then I laugh at the irony.
Not uploading shit anywhere. If you want my movie you have to tell me where you live.

The majority of films on mainstream release are brain dead eye candy, more style over substance and something to kill 2 hours. There are better quality movies out there that will give you far more than a numb bum and CGI effects! And it doesn't make you a pretentious wanker to look out for these films or enjoy watching them. I can't believe that the last 20 posts were wasted because someone got upset over the Wedding Singer or something
PST is a verbal pugilist and the more you go back for him the more he'll come back at you. He gets off on it!

Fair play.
I want to watch Grindhouse on a Friday night at the local ICE (Inner City Entertainment) theater. Saw Zodiac there (which ruled, if I haven't mentioned) and people walked out, but this should be entertaining on multiple levels. Wish I'd seen 300 there.

300 was terrible...I really don't understand the good reviews?

my initial post wasn't in relation to the wedding singer or wedding crashers..it also wasn't about pst not being able to share his opinion..especially if it is always different. its the manner in which he posts that i was commenting on. there is nothing wrong with posting your opinions..no matter how stupid they could be or even if your opinion happens to different most of the time. that is all fine. however, theres a difference between having different..or even more sophisticated tastes and unnecessarily being a condescending arse. that was my point...and i think pst knew that from the first time he read my post.

This is my first post about a movie in the movie thread... the rest have been making fun of people or pointless interjections. Here it is:
Did anyone else find Lost in Translation to be almost impossibly overrated?
Critics and people went completely crazy about it, and I thought it was awful - trite, stilted, even maudlin. How a movie where everyone is in paralysis and spends most of their time looking hangdog managed to strike me as maudlin, I'll never know.
I think I know why. Reviews and fans endlessly cited 'alienation', 'emptiness and neglect', 'existential crises' etc. - very caustic modern problems. To a viewing public, maybe this kind of barely-alive narrative is all you have to do in order to get points for something significant.
But to anyone who cut their teeth on literature better than the back of a packet of crisps, this is fucking insulting. Surely a hundred thousand text from Pascal onwards have dealt with the same problems without being this grindingly sophomoric.
Am I missing something?

graf: If I couldn't be a dick I don't know what I'd be.
Jim: You're missing nothing. The movie's incredibly overrated. The two people whose career seemed to show promise from it (Coppola and Johansson) have both turned out to be empty, just superficially resembling something intelligent rather than being it. There are very good movies that deal with all those modern topics you listed, but it takes a real creative mind. There has to be a generating artistic force serving as the center around which everything is built. LiT has no center, just a lot of help from daddy making the uninspired borrowing look passable.
Of course, the movie could be both sophomoric and great. But, again, that would take an artist at the helm coordinating everything.
Oh, and anybody who actually likes Lost in Translation probably also skips jump rope.

I'm dying to see Grindhouse, but my friends apparently have something called a "job"...

That's another thing that puzzles me: why does everyone think Scarlett Johansen is the psychic lovechild of Ingmar Bergman and Venus de Milo? She appears to be a po-faced chump with great tits. I have seen little of her, but I do know that any woman who dares to do something like this is REALLY pushing it...

Hey PST, got any suggestions for what I read is the "golden age" of American cinema (ie the 70s)?
Currently "obtaining" Koyaanisqatsi. I've heard good things.

Yeah, I heard about that album a while ago. I'm assuming it won't happen, or will suck. But there was a brief moment when Scarlett seemed like she knew what was going on.
The 70s? That's a very broad category, and I'd bet you know many of the classics already. But why not try Sisters and Obsession by De Palma and Lumet's Murder on the Orient Express? The Panic in Needle Park will probably do well too. There are a lot of great American movies from the 70s (though not as many as the critics, all of whom started then, will claim).

Cool, I haven't seen any of the ones you mentioned - I'll definitely check 'em out.
Just watched Ghost Rider. I really loved it, in the way I love the remake of The Wicker Man - immense cheese and overall crapness sometimes is a winning formula for great entertainment.
Nick Cage is a god amongst men.

If you'd be more specific about what you mean by the 70's (even just by telling me which films from the era you like), I can give you some better recommendations. Those are just random titles from the 70's that I assumed you wouldn't have seen and generally like.

Watched Sky High, sort of a cross between Randall and Hopkirk Deceased and Charmed Not as good as Ryuhei Kitamura's other works such as Versus and Azumi but it did have chicks sword fighting

That's a great movie! Jack Nicholson is a sure role model in that one. I'd go back in time and bang Sally Struthers too.
Just watched Children of Men. I'm not real impressed with a majority of the wide releases anymore, but this was amazingly well done. The plot is completely relevant given the unpredictable nature of the world. Clive Owen and Michael Cain are as good as always, as well as some other British actors I previously didn't know of. The direction is phenomenal! 6 minute action sequences without a single cut, really made this movie stand out. Well deserved hype with this one.

Watched the French film Brotherhood of the Wolf. It was alright but not as good as I thought it'd be seeing all the raving about it I'd read. When the Dave Lee Roth look alike finally put his dick away and started kicking ass it was good, but too much of the film was taken up by him trying to poke posh totty! Some of the fight scenes were good but others looked like badly choreographed Back Street boys routines!

i thought it was awesome, nice and moody, good plot that didn't JUST focus on the girl's fantasies. and i thought it was filmed really nicely. also saw his other film (well i saw the second half anyway) the devils backbone ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0256009/ ) which was interesting from the part i saw onward, nicely filmed again, different feel but you could tell it was his work. i'm starting to really like Guillermo del Toro now.

Saw the Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie recently. I was basically just a longer, uncensored episode but it was worth it. The opening song by Mastodon was fucking hilarious.

Agreed. I don't watch a lot of comedies, but I'd say this is among the best I've seen.
I have recently seen Sunshine and Mr Bean's Holiday. I though both were quite poor.

I thought the ATHF movie was horrible, WAY too drawn out. It had its moments, but I can only handle Aqua Teen 11 minutes at a time.

Watched Planet Terror last night (first film of the 2 that Rodriguez/Tarantino made - Grindhouse) fell asleep for the second one (Tarantino's one) but Planet Terror was awesome! so fucking good. it's just simply a great B-movie. the style and everything was so awesome. there are some wierd bits like when a chick gets a gun for a leg but meh, whats to be expected. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0462322/

It's Meatball, not lint ball. You either get ATHF or you don't. I personally think it is some of the funniest stuff ever created. I'm thinking about getting a tattoo of Master Shake on my ass.

im not sure what there is to "get". the characters look like shit. more specifically, like they were created by a 6 year old, and then drawn by someone with mediocre skills. maybe i was too distracted, by that, to find it funny.
it took me years to even like south park. and i still dont like the old episodes. not very into toons.

I don't know where you're coming from about the ATHF animation looking like shit. Sure it isn't anything remarkable and it isn't heavy on detail but thats just its style. It might not be up to par with whatever Hentai you get off on, but its certainly nothing to rag on. Carl.
Anyway, ATHF isn't at all gut-busting hilarious.. its just got a strange humor which can be pretty funny (but sometimes boring or lame). The movie is just a long episode and it has its moments. I really could have done without that fucking annoying Robot Turkey from the past. I hate that thing!

Ren & Stimpy, Rocco's Modern Life and Futurama are 3 of the greatest television shows ever, regardless of the fact that they happen to be cartoons (not to mention, The Simpson's in their prime). Just becasue something is animated shouldn't make it good or bad.

watched kiss of the tarantula yesterday.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0131449/
i wasn't expecting much and got what i was expecting. the only reason i even rented it from netflix was because of the tarantulas. this girl has a bunch of Brachypelma smithi which was and still is one of the most popular species in the pet trade. the funny thing is that these ones are deadly and seem to do her bidding. i know its just some b movie horror shit..but as a spider nerd, i find it hilarious that they chose one of the most docile species in the world to represent evil.

i didnt say that the reason they are good or bad is because of being animated. you listed those 3, and i said 2-3 for myself. i dont dislike something, because it happens to be a toon. i just dont happen to like toons much.

ehh... not really. for me, it helps that there are tarantulas. if it weren't for them, it would've been pretty shitty. having seen it i don't plan on sitting through it again. if you do decide to check it out, get stoned and drunk first.
i'd have to say there are much better/shittier b movies out there.

Watched two Kubrick films recently.
Watched Barry Lyndon first. The cinematography was absolutely wonderful, quite possibly the best I've ever seen. A lot of the time when watching films, I think to myself "so and so angle would've been much better for so and so shot" - in Barry Lyndon, everything was absolutely perfect. Definitely one of my favourite films, I just can't think of a single thing, however minor, wrong with it.
Watched 2001: A Space Odyssey next. From the Kubrick films that I've seen (Barry Lyndon, Full Metal Jacket, A Clockwork Orange and The Shining), 2001 is definitely the weakest. It's just too drawn out, and I wasn't really enthralled or absorbed by the film. Shame - I really wanted to enjoy it to a much larger extent than I did, considering the reviews for it, but it just didn't deliver.
Also viewed one of Ridley Scott's early films, The Duellists. Absolutely fantastic all around, and most definitely the best fight choreography I've ever seen in a film.

Must've missed this. I guess what I really meant was good 70s American drama, a la Five Easy Pieces.

Has anybody seen The Lookout? I've seen many great reviews about it, and I was first interested because of Joseph Gordon Levitt (who was in Brick, a modern favorite of mine).
I also heard some good stuff about Disturbia, and will hopefully get to see it. JGL is actually dating the hot girl in that movie... but that's a bit irrelevant.

Watched Gettysburg and Gods and Generals recently. Dear god what awful films, among the worst war films I've ever seen.
Currently "obtaining" Glory. Here's hoping it's at least halfway decent, because if I watch three awful ACW movies in as many days I'll go crazy.

Glory is a great movie, and has a very memorable score as well. I loved it when I saw it in 7th grade... and I guess that means something. (ignore that)
My very knowledgeable history teacher said it was one of the great war movies as well, so I'm sure you'll get your money's worth. Or if you're borrowing it you'll just be very pleased.

Ha, that was hilarious.
I just watched Best in Show for the first time in a while because I just got a dog. I love the scene where the hotel manager is talking about a rock group staying in a suite... "apparently they weren't aware there was a restroom IN the room." Ha. I also like that really flamboyant gay guy.
"I have you guys marked down for a queen..."
"Just WHAT are you suggesting??"
And also that bloodhound owner.....the director.
What a fantastic movie. This is definatley my favorite Christopher Guest film.

Yeah, The Big Lebowski is one of my all-time favourite films. Re-watched it a couple of days ago.

Just saw 28 Weeks Later. Really great movie overall and probably one of the most intense Zombie movies I've ever seen. I think its better than the first, but I'd have to rewatch it (28 days later) again because I saw it so long ago. I don't remember reacting as strongly to it, though.
I found out about God Speed You Black Emperor from the first film and the music in 28 Weeks Later sounds very GSYBE-ish but I didnt' recognize anything and can't find anything talking about if they contributed any material
