It was pretty poor. Seemed like a few times it wanted to be a comedy, sometimes a thriller/action, and the whole delayed satellite images/space wormhole thing was OTT.

If you knew it, you wouldn't have said the opposite. That's how these things tend to work. I wish our actions didn't reflect things about us we'd like to deny, but that's the world.
Deja Vu was cool and was missing the massive pacing problems Scott had on his last few, but I expect it will be much better on the Director's Cut, since there seem to be some artifacts of a more interesting film in the one I saw. I don't know how much to recommend the one out now. Not really like Minority Report, though, so if that's a standard for you, you might not enjoy the experience.

Just watched the Wishing Stairs and saw my first fat suit in a Korean Horror Found the film rather enjoyable though I want to watch the first one in the High School Ghost Stories, Whispering Corridor now as I hear it is much better. But hey it was set in an all girls school which appeals to an old perv like me

went to see Perfume: the story of a murderer.
it suprised me how close the movie stayed to the original book by Susskind, an extreme, absurdistic but pretty heavy movie.

I just watched Tideland. What a fucked up movie that was. It was very twisted and worth watching.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0410764/
I'm deciding whether to watch The Illusionist or the TCSM The Beginning.

a scanner darkly.
never read the book but was a good movie, i doubt the dialogue and sequences are true to the book but it definitely is philip k dick-esque.
a great movie with keanu reeves? who would of thought?
keanu reeves is the same wooden, monotone dude in every movie he is in, but it didnt overshadow this one because he was backed up by some memorable roles.

Keanu's fine when the character is supposed to have no idea about what's going on, and few characters in the history of film and literature have less of an idea about what's going on than Bob Arctor. I'm still somewhat ambivalent about that movie.
Just saw The Good German. Adopting a mid-40s Hollywood style is a mixed blessing, but if they did it for the reason I believe they did (briefly, the film deals with how America helped rehabilitate Germany by blaming everything done on a very small number of mostly dead Nazis, therefore absolving various complicit Germans of their guilt (and it's important to realize that Germans did everything we attribute to those damn Nazis); this was done in part through post-war film propaganda made in the same style as the one this film restrained itself to using) it's a pretty damn clever idea. Cate Blanchett looked impossibly beautiful.

Watched 'Seven Swords' last night and I was mighty impressed! Adapted from the book 'Seven Swords from Mount Heaven' it's very much a Magnificent Seven tale. The fight scenes were violent and nasty with out being too gory or silly and the villans wore corpse paint and had weapons that Immortal would have killed for in those silly black metal photo shoots!
The film was very dry and dusty which gave it a nod to the spag westerns and the parting shot as they road off into the desert was very Leone.
A Good German is on my list of films to watch!

Just watched Gallipoli. What a brilliant film - it's become one of my all time favourite war films. What an ending...
About to watch 9th Company, a film about the Soviet war in Afghanistan...

sin city.
liked it.
2 wierd things i dont get..........is there any geographic location in the world that has winter snow and tar pits.
i just found it odd, i know that there is volcanic activity in northern regions but...tar pits??? wouldnt they freeze?
the other thing is that mickey rourke's role looked, spoke and acted like kirk douglas way too much. he did good but it was more an imitation than a reference, the character fit well tho, so no real complaints.
some of the acting was hammy overall, and the cast choice wasnt the best, bruce willis comes to mind, that rosio dawson chick is more beauty than talent, michael madsen couldnt hang with a 50's gumshoe, bogartesque accent, the clive owen dude is like keanu reeves 2, some other dud actors on the bill.
i do, however, like seeing retgur haurer..............the dude looks like a psychotic in a subtle way no matter what role he is.

Ha ha That's probably why he always plays psychos! The only person more typecast as a crazy fruit loop is Dennis Hopper
I liked Sin City despite it's faults, I'm never one for comic book adaptations but I found this visually more appealing.

Just watched Children of Men. A really average movie. Good idea but very poorly executed IMO, and the crappy wooden acting from the supporting cast doesn't help it either - especially from the black girl and the dreadlocked white woman. The cinematography is bog-standard, the dialogue average, the plot is thin...let's just say I'm glad I didn't pay to watch it.
Shame. I was quite hyped to see it when I heard it was another dystopian film set in Britain.

I saw this a few weeks ago...gotta love piracy!
I agree with most of what you said, except it was very well shot. That one long take from when the war is going on was awesome.
I was quite disappointed with the ending...it was so unfulfillable.
I'm about to watch the Illusionist, finally.

I thought the cinematography was amazing. The concept of the movie was pretty cool but the story line absolutely sucked. Why the fuck did they sneak INTO the prison? That shit didn't make any sense to me. During the movie, I turned to my friend and asked "how the fuck are you supposed to end a movie like this?"... I guess the answer was 'VERY ABRUPTLY.'
SPOILER: DONT READ IF YOU WANT TO SEE THE MOVIE!!!
Sidenote: I thought the scene where the black chick carries her baby out of the building was absolutely fantastic. If I were a bitch, I probably would have cried. In all seriousness, the scene was really moving; with the baby representing innocence and hope. Absolutely fantastic! .....I'ma go douche my cunt now.

I liked that scene too. I actually enjoyed the movie, however much of a BITCH that dreadlock lady was. That birth scene was pretty intense as well.

So i just watched jackass 2. That movie is VERY fucking hilarious. I dont' think i've laughed that hard in a very long fucking time. The whole taxi cab driver scene was a complete fucking riot. I couldn't stop laughing at the fact they put fucking pubes on his face.
Good movie.

It's pretty pathetic that the average attention span for a movie is only about 80-90 minutes.

AN is such a good movie, with a lot of truths in it and a great show of the confusion suffered in Vietnam, I enjoy every minute of it every time I watch it.

Darren Aronofsky came by for a screening of The Fountain. What a depressing movie, not because the story's sad but because it's incredibly dumb, empty, and pretentious despite being (very) well made, a slick imitation of profoundly ambiguous films by directors with real art, that tragedy that always happens when somebody's schooled enough to know all the hallmarks of a great work and thinks that by tossing those into his work, it will of necessity be great. Lots of faux-Kurosawan and faux-Kubrickian shot composition, filled to cloying with obtuse symbolism aping the wrong parts of great films, all sorts of bullshit.
However, and I remarked on this last night, I think the film, if it could just be seen as a play of sound and image, would be great. The visual style was great, as was the score, and what's really depressing is that these were put to such a bad end. I'd almost like to see it without dialogue, Begotten style, but the score complemented the sounds of the actors' voices as well as it did the images. Real masterful if you can get it free of the story.
So I'd like to see it again if I ever forget how to understand English.

Watched 'Love, Honour and Obey' a more comedic take on the Brit underworld. Scenes of merit include gangsters dressed as Viagra taking Arabs pulling a diamond heist with bone ons, a fancy dress coup de grace, a prostrate exam taken with a toilet brush and a whole host of actors doing karaoke. Sean Pertwee dueting on the theme from Fireball XL 5 anyone!
And the good thing is it starred Jude Law and he hardly said anything or appeared in any scenes so extra bonus there!

I have a warm feeling about the new Rocky film.
I imagine that watching it will feel like having sex with a girl you previously had a long term relationship with.

The most interesting part is near the end when you realise he's been dreaming/dead for the past 5-10 minutes, but still, nothing special.
Cheap Tuesday tomorrow so going to see either 'Smokin' Aces' or 'The Last King of Scotland'.

Shame. I was quite hyped to see it when I heard it was another dystopian film set in Britain.

Pffffffff! Didn't think I'd see a response like that. The director did a great job executing his idea and its been awhile since I've been that sucked into a movie. The acting was strong and believable and as for the cinematography (which was awesome) a few of those shooting scenes were apparently done in one cut, a few extending over 10 minutes. I don't know a whole load of movie accomplishments, but the only person I can think of that did something like that (at least successfully) was Hitchcock. Compared to another "british dystopia" film, like 28 Days Later (which is good), I think it really pushes it aside. I was convinced a second chance at humanity was hopeless. I loved it.

It's a franchise at this point. They're all supposed to have the same story.
Pan's Labyrinth is two things:
1. Great.
2. 1/1000th as great as everybody says it is.
Unlike with some supposedly 'best' movies, I can see what the attraction is, but although it's very nice to see a somewhat interesting idea brought off competently, the few problems there are, which are mostly conceptual, are very, very big. At least for this viewer.
First shoot of the quarter tomorrow. May also see Letters From Iwo Jima which promises to be good.

I finally watched Jesus Camp. It was fucking terrifying what falsification they feed these poor kids. I was talking about it to my devout Christian older brother the other day and he simply said, "I heard it was good." I really don't know if those were the right choice of words...even if you were to enjoy this film. His response scared me a little.

Little Miss Sunshine was pretty good. It's good to watch a comedy that portrays life in somewhat real terms: that life isn't that funny ALL the fucking time.

No no no no no. You could have written that movie if you'd had a committee of people who'd watched every successful 'indie' movie, sussed out the formula, and forced you to follow it as strictly as possible. It would be cool if they'd been joking on the formula along the way, but no, they were just cheap-shotting you into submission, with the biggest and most disgraceful cheap-shot coming last. And, of course, being celebrated.

I didn't say it wasn't funny. I said it relied on following a formula for the 'Indy comedy' as closely as imaginable, plus a series of cheap shots and a big dose of hypocrisy (actually the last bit is a new addition, but I thought it since well before that post). But it did all that expressly to make you laugh - there's no other reason to do it - so why shouldn't it have succeeded?

hah i liked that movie..however i think the fact that it was about one of my favorite things (beer) really helped with that. it was much more enjoyable than club dread i'd say...but super troopers kicked ass..so cd was quite a let down.

Finally saw Children of Men. Complaints about the cinematography are pretty far off-base; bog-standard does not include long planned sequences in which space in all its dimensions is utilized perfectly without relying on a cut. Those compositions were Kurosawa with a shaki-cam, and that in itself is just incredible. I fucking wish the industry standard knew how to synthesize all the camera stance innovations of some masters and use it for an action film.
Aside from that, it was pretty good. But that it was masterful with the camera in service of being pretty good makes it great.

I watched Toys yesterday for the first time since I was 6 years old...I believe I enjoyed it more when I was that age.
I watched The Prestige yesterday as well. It was an excellent film. It's just so full of twists you really have to keep focused on what is going on throughout.
I'm on a break from Flags of Our Fathers right now.

Watched Kind Hearts and Coronets for the first time in years. Sir Alec 'Obi Wan' Guiness played nine parts in the film! Classic old Brit/Ealing black comedy, though it maybe too old for some of the younger forum members to bother wasting time on, but I recommend you do
Also watched Gen-X-Cops, a Hong Kong action movie with a very cool punky/metal theme tune sung by the cast! No CGI here they really did blow up the actors and set them on fire! Hurrah! Plus Jackie Chan makes a cameo and gives the cheeky young stars a playful put down or two!

bahah! same! i saw it within a year ago, and i just thought "what the fuck was i thinking". first saw it around age 7.
who likes Kung Fu Hustle? who hates it? in a way, i like it, but not for humor. in fact, the humor and absurd stunts/tricks kind of mess it up, for me. there are a lot of little parts i like though. i like when those two guys are playing that long, wooden instrument that shoots swords.

You would probably enjoy it../\/\@R1n3Z.
The battle shots were filmed in Iceland because Japan wouldn't allow filming there. Kinda strange how little America vs Japan is rarely brought up, same goes with the Korean War. Americans have succumbed to superior Japanese technology!

Two reasons for that:
1. Post WWII the Soviet threat forced us to go on a propaganda spree making our former enemies seem great. We were at the same time making sure that the countries were great, in the sense of strong and secure, but needed to reverse the image we'd spread of them before the war. This led to a lot of pretending that a very few abstract Nazis were responsible for the atrocities committed by Germany during the war, and also to the near total image overhaul of the Japanese.
2. The reason for this discrepancy has to do, I think, with the fact that we were unfamiliar with (and indifferent to) Japan's war atrocities. Combined with the fact that Japan was mostly an old-fashioned imperial society of the type we knew from WWI rather than the great modernist killing machine we find so fascinating, it's no surprise that the war against Japan didn't really interest us so much afterwards.
As for Korea, we've always ignored that war.
Flags of Our Fathers really could have been great. I'm convinced Paul Haggis ruined it, since the portion that sucks, where all the cool ambiguous and very self-reflexive stuff about war propagandizing gets replaced by mawkish senimentality, is the kind of pure simplified manipulation tactics employed by that particular hack. Still, before the writer/son takes over the narrative, it's a pretty good film. I'm assuming that Letters From Iwo Jima has less of the emotionally cloying war movie bullshit and is for that reason better, but I suspect that the main reason that critics are saying it's so much better is that it's less 'Hollywood.' But we'll see.

where green ants dream.
this is a australian film, german director, made in the 80s dealing with a mining company in a dispute with some aboriginies.
it was pretty cool since i know nothing about aboriginies and havent even really seen them before, even on film.
this piqued my interest in australian movies in general, i havent seen many. any other good films? can be any kind of film, not neccessarily about aboriginies foremost.

Yeah i've heard flags of our fathers was eh ok.
I went and saw the flag at the beginning of this month!!! At the Marine Corps museum that opened in Quantico. Definately one of hte best museums i've ever been in.
I must the Korean war was probably my favorite personally. There is this scene with a tank in it that was pretty fucking intense. Some Russian tank i think a T-62 maybe. It was just so fucking big. (earlier we were walking by the WW2 area and there was a smaller tank, and i was like this is barely intimidating) The other one holy fuck haha.
Also everything in side the musuem is the no shit real thing. I.E. One of 2 marines who ever won 2 medals of honor had both of his medal of honors in a display case. They were old as shit.
Annnnnnyways. I heard of some contriversy over Letters from Iwo Jima because apparently the Japanese are weary of conservative ideals and feelings (the old japanese that PST mentions) and something with an election going on, so it seemed intresting. Not to mention i would like to see a movie on the other side.
I've heard stories of japenese coming out of caves on iwo jima like 30-40 years AFTER the battles ended. Imagine going into these caves during WW2 and coming out in the late 70s. Talk about "blast from the past" haha.

Just looked it up. Most definately his..... completely different piece.
He wrote one or 2 episodes for some pretty queer shows.

Just seen The Last King of Scotland. A decent thriller for sure. Not the historical drama I was expecting due to some parts seeming very fictional. Also, Whitaker is brilliant.

J3SUS. I'M GLAD YOU ENJOYED IT.
Feast was pretty good, it was entertaining at least. I finally saw The Departed yesterday..it was a solid film, yet I did expect a little more from it...I guess after hearing how great it was for several months dulled it for me a little bit.
I dled The Running Man, godamn I love that movie. lol.

scanner darkly is good, get the film, rent it, whatever, its good.
i just watched borat at a dollar theatre.
i cringed the whole movie, some of it was really funny and alot of it was really awkward.
but get this, wierd fucking thing...........there is a romanian march song that goes on at 2 different parts of the movie.
i instantly recognized it, the song is called "edalizi", i actually have a mix cd somewhere of new orleans/east european march songs i got from a local marching band that i tried out drumming for about a year ago. this marching band actually covers that song and ive listened to it alot, it was my favorite track.
its a great song, they only played a few seconds of it at a time but its wierd they chose that particular song since its romanian.
i guess its an in-joke because the village is actually a romanian shanty town instead of a kazahstani one.
the shit at the end was insane, especially hearing that that wasnt staged.......i mean, it fucked up if you really think about it.

Begotten is great. Most of it's on youtube by this time, I think, which is good since it can be difficult to get.
The Terminal is a piece of shit. Not because it's predictable (every Spielberg movie is and you need to know that coming in), rather because it's one of several of Spielberg's recent attempts to make an intelligent, important film that's just another uninspired, rote copy. Okay, so that's partially because it's predictable, but really predictability is a sympton of a deeper cause. If that film really moved you in some way I sincerely (sincerely) hope you'll reevaluate the art you let into your life; it's like eating a cream puff and saying you've been nourished.
The Departed would have been a mess in anybody's hands but Scorsese's. It was in Scorsese's too, but he's good enough to trick us into believing it was okay.

edit: in other words. it was enjoyable but not satifying and left me wanting more...

Awesome movie. I watched it while intoxicated and still loved it, and I normally hate movies when I'm drinking. I went back and watched it sober and it was even better.

I love Forest Whitaker. As a matter of fact, though, I love everyone who had a major part in Platoon. Ghost Dog was brilliant, too.

I wish that movie didn't cost so much money, when and if you're able to find it.

i just saw a french movie called district B13. don't worry you don't need to speak french, but it has without a doubt the most definitively amazing action scenes you will EVVER see. these people have no life other than compound training and being demi-gods

I've seen this as well, but I believe it's just called "District 13". The story wasn't that strong, but the action scenes were definitely very fun to watch.

Hubby said he wants to go see Ghost Rider because he used to read the comics. I thought I saw someone familiar and asked if Sam Elliot was in it. He said yeah and I said I want to see it, too. I like Sam.
He told me to keep my pants on!!!!!

Well, i guess we have different reasons for saying so, but Sam Elliot IS the shit. However, I always go into any Nick Cage movie wondering if he's going to over act and if it will ruin everything. I really hope it's good.

You can download it through torrents and what not.
Apparently (I havent seen it) it's moderately easy to find it in the types of stores that sell foreign films no one have ever heard of. Mom and pop shops, places like that. And they usually don't know what they've got, so it's cheap.
Or so I heard.

haha, I know...I haven't found it anywhere either. I guess there isn't enough Eastern Europeans to take care of our exclusive movie pirating.
I tried to see it in theatres..but there was like 200 fucking people in line.
