Band Age Requirements

Hey everybody.

What are your opinions of age differences in bands/forming bands?

If I was say 16, then what's the oldest and youngest age that would be acceptably 'cool'?

What If I was 30, what's the youngest I could go for without feeling the need to babysit?

Is it cool to jam with your guitar teacher in a gig if you're 16 and he's 32? What if you were the guitar teacher and you were asked to help the young'n out?

Anyone in this situation already?

in my band I'm 19 the drummer is 22 the other guitarist is 20 and the bassist is 17. no problem's at all but I guess it doesn't matter. it's about the music not the age of course. it's just that some people think it's weird or something. And this is not an attack towards you

I'd think it was cool if a bunch of old school death metal dudes in their forties or something had a youngster playing with them too.

Oh yea.. ur the guy who got his rhoads keyed by that emo bastard... On topic, seriously why the hell should age matter if the music coming out of the band is good?

the only problem with age comes when you try to start playing alot of gigs at bars and clubs. Most places will not let anyone under 18 in, even if they are in the band.

I put up an ad for a bass player around here a while ago, and I got a response from this kid who was like 14 or something. I'm not sure if he was 14 or 16 but 14 sound much more like it. Anyway, I had to turn him down because I'm 23, and the other guy is 25 and the guy didn't even have a ride, (he was 14, not much he could do about it). It would've been awkward jamming with someone who is that young, but a fresh mind is a great thing and at 14 he's definitelly fresh. Plus, like someone said, if you're under 18 you can't get into bars. Some places are even 21+.

So yeah, age matters for practical reasons for the most part. Also, maturity and commitment are always an issue. Chances are that a 14 year old isn't gonna be as serious or as dedicated as someone ten years older than him. There's always the chance that he would, but that's pretty slim. That's why I prefer playing with people who are over 18 or 21, because you don't get most of those complications. Not to say that you couldn't experience those same problems with someone who is in their 20s, (in fact I have), but you gotta kinda look at it logically.

Age is nothing I was in a band with two 30+ year olds and I was 15, playing bass and doing vocals. Ever since I left they never found a replacement as good as me.

A lot of bars around my area let people play if they are under 18 they just can't drink or anything. As for maturity, that all depends on the individual. There are some 12 year olds who are more mature than some 20 year olds that I have met.

When Defeated Sanity started, Wolfgang (the guitarist) was in his mid 40's and Lille (drummer) was in his early teens. There's a rumour they might even be father and son, but man, what a duo.

Clearly age should be no barrier.

i will admit that i would feel a little weird if i had a 12 year old in my band picture. i know it doesnt have an effect on whether they are good or not, but its kind of strange anyway. i guess 15 or 16 and up is all ok. and i think maybe for the older age it would be up to 45. thats just my opinion. i know their are older guys in bands out there, but honestly, i wouldnt want a little kid, or an old ass dude in my band. and thats just how i feel about it.

Hah, yeah. It's weird though, even though they are cartoon characters - they actually have updated bios, so their ages change, the looks change (especially Noodle). I wouldn't mind seeing how they pull it off live though.

as you get older drummers become scarce in some places so you get like a 30yr old dude or a high school kid playing. this ive noticed coz ive been in bands with people alot older. its the way with the band im in now, our singer is 24 which is the youngest

I think age matters to a certin point I mean you cant expect a 14 year old kid to be down for touring and recording while going to school but for jaming I dont think its a big deal.I jam with my dad all the time he's 55 and im 17.

In my area, there's barely anyone my age who plays the good stuff. They're all younger and in around high school. It kind of throws me off a bit perhaps. I mean, I'd be jamming with my younger brothers friends who I coach! Playing with your dad is different. It's like tossing the football around outside. I jam in a band with varying ages between 21 and 35 and we have no problems either (but it's a classic rock band where I play bass). I want to get together and jam some metal and the younger crowd seems more available. Perhaps if you come across the right people, it won't make a difference.

As for the bar age thing, I don't think its a problem where we are. If you're part of the band, it's cool. Just don't drink underage.

I've drunkenly jammed the acoustic guitar(I dont even play guitar haha) with a bunch of 50 year old potheadalcoholics and my friend's girlfriends house..it seemed to workout nice, I added some metal flare into their old school rock routine.

I think age matters to an extent, I could be in a band with older people, but would be less comfortable if they were dramatically younger than myself.
