Ya know, I think that the worst the MPA can ever do is make it to where we can't "download" or "save target as" to any tab. Most of my music teachers' websites use musical compositions for their course of study. Since that is illegal to give out free mp3s, they just have then to where you can only listen to them on the website--no downloading.

The MPA will fail with lawsuits, as others have probably already stated, the disclaimer on 99.9% of tablature sites states that they are the tabbers interpretation of the song. Also, how much more anal can they get? Standard tabs are definitely not impeding on the rights of the bands, as they don't even give rhythm notation most of the time. And Powertab and Guitar Pro tabs are almost always not 100% correct either. And if a tab was 100% correct, how are they to prove it was copied from a tab book and not just ingenuity from the tabber? Powertabs will be back up, nothing changed, and the MPA will become the laughingstock of all the tab sites.

Fucking hell! I just deleted a bunch of petition spam at tc in the forums. Some of them actually signed it, too. It might be something innocent, but give some unknown your email address? THINK! NO! It's not going to make a darn bit of difference if it's a copyright violation anyways. Don't play into their schemes. If you want to do something then find out the proper channels and go straight to the source. There was multiple addresses of the signatures in the posts themselves. That doesn't sound too cool to me.

Generally if you're going to perform something and get paid for it you're supposed to get permission from the one who retains the copyrights anything else is considered unautorized use.

There are websites through the US Library of Congress with guidelines and lots of information on copyrights. I've looked at the Canadian Copyright site, too. Go read some of that stuff and educate yourselves.

Well, I have read up on international copyright issues before and correct me if I'm wrong:
In the current form, all type of commercial use of a song or something else that is protected by copyright is strictly prohibited unless specifically allowed by the one legaly owning the piece.
Non-commercial use, such as learning the song and playing it at private parties, charity events, free shows and so on, where the one playing does not gain anything personally financial-wise is at least indirectly allowed. I.e. it is not forbidden. And tabbing is just to learn a lot of other people how to play a song.

Two things:

1. Amadeus is correct; any use of copyrighted material that is not for personal profit is legal. Covering a song and distributing the recording is legal if you don't make money by it. So, even if you find writing a tab and distributing it equivalent to that, it should be fine so long as it's for free, which is the case with virtually ever tab site I've been to. Like I think I said in my first post, they'd have to reinterpret and outright change laws in a way that would set a very, very ugly, very, very harmful precedent, and if anybody who deals with this has the foresight to see this, nothing will come of it. And the good thing about the legal system is that, somewhere down the line, somebody will realize the kind of bullshit trying to be done and shit-can it. I wouldn't be too worried.

2. Jeff Loomis is ridiculous. When I saw him, he played note-perfect and wouldn't even take a compliment when I tried to give one to him. 'I try' was all he said. Compare that to the ego of everyone you know who's learned how to sweep pick and realize why I hate talking to bedroom guitarists.

Well, the tabs in mags are there because the mag is paying for their usage or the artist has some type of agreement with the magazine. A friend of mine explained it like a video store pays more than a person off the street would for a particular video's distribution rights. When someone publishes the tab without permission then the author makes no money from it because there's no distribution rights. But the one's that are on a site like this are done by fans and I agree, it's a lot like what you said.
