thanks, I find it hard to believe any supplements works. Whey is basically pure shit, its crappy cheese leftovers. Creatine gives u the runs, but so far L-arginine works for me.

I agree. Whey protein powder worked wonders on me when I used to workout, as well as the good varieties it can be a great supplement to your body.

Creatine is complete garbage on the other hand.

Soy protein is fucking horrible. Tastes bad, crappy amino acid profile, and fucks very badly with your endocrinology.

Personally, I find the convenience issue to be the exact opposite of what you said. That would be why I have eight kilos of whey protein in my kitchen, no soy products, & no canned fish.

FBS, what is the proper way to start taking Creatine. I went to BB.com and they had many different articles about it, most of them at least a little different from the other. I read one that said to take 20g a day for 4-7 days then maintain it at 2-5g a day. I read another one that said the loading process is a waste, just start taking 2-5 a day. What do you think?

Um, in the mouth?

Seriously though... take a teaspoon a day with something sugary, preferably after workouts, until you run out of creatine. Don't worry about dosage protocols and thermobollocks and loadeocrapology. It's all just silliness.

Right, so i'm not going to browse 156 pages to know if this is answered.
So creatin makes your muscles bulkier by hydrating them.
I do have a layer of body fat over my muscles. So do i'll look like a wet fart after taking it?

My goal is not bodybuilding, but getting into shape and hopefully getting some abs and pecs by the end of summer.
Right now, I'm mainly running and swordfighting, but also doing some simple strenght exersizes like pushups, situps and crunches.

Hmm, I just read Creatine also increases metabolism and muscle energy.
I'm going to look more into this.

Or hamhocks.

Thank you so much for that link. I've been arguing with every vegetarian that I come across that soy is bullshit for a while, and now I'll actually have FACTS to work in there instead of my just my overblown opinion. It's hard trying to convince them that eating animals is just about the only good thing for this planet people still do. As soon as people find out you're an environmentalist they automatically assume you'll sympathise with weirdos who won't eat meat because it's t3h m34n5.

You also wouldn't believe how many moral vegetarians mistakenly believe that humans aren't naturally designed to either hunt or digest animals. Luckily, they're usually just wildly ignorant instead of incredibly stupid and can therefore be informed.

That, but more commonly to drop fat. Past a multivitamin, protein, fish oil & creatine there is very little else worth buying.

Not really. I doubt you'll notice any difference.

sixorz - If you're going to drink beer...it's seriously not worth drinking light beer over. There is not much calorie difference in most cases anyways. Workout, have some beers and don't drink every day or every other day.

Edit - Or, I noticed you were talking about me...yeah, in that case don't do drugs either.

Bill Kazmaier was such a shitty wrestler. Power lifters rarely make good wrestlers. Mark Henry sucks, Bill Kazmaier sucked, Ted Arcidi sucked, Nick Busick sucked... I could go on and on.

The only powerlifter who wasn't really bad in the ring was Doug Furnas, and he not only wasn't bad, he was pretty fucking good. Not awesome, but awfully good.

Bodybuilders tend to make even worse wrestlers. Contrarily, wrestlers happen to make decent bodybuilders with enough PEDs.

That's fucking terrible.

Recently I was turned off to tuna as well, after reading about the quantities of mercury that is "packaged in" (in a manner of speaking) with each can.

What, this wasn't just a one time happening? I figured he just was some sort of guest star or something. I don't know shit about wrestling though, so I've got no idea how this works.

In the video you gave us, it referenced past and future matches of Kaz's. It's clear from that that he was a wrestler for a little while. And, based on that tape, he wasn't particularly entertaining; just 'Try a move on me! Oh-ho! I'm too strong! But you're so weak I'll do the exact thing on you!' Then again, given the differences between powerlifting and wrestling, why should he be any good as a wrestler?

I thought the mercury wasn't due to the canning, but due to crappy polluted seas?

My implication was a little loose...it was late.

Yes though, the mercury is from the polluted seas. From what I have read, schools of tuna enjoy hanging out around coal power plants and what not.

So we can thank ourselves for killing our selves like always...lol

Didn't catch were it was referred to his past and future matches. The "I am stronger than you" thing was pretty much why I found the vid funny in the first place. But then again, they pretty much never show any wrestling over here, so I find most of it atleast somewhat entertaining.

I think I saw that guy on myspace once. He did seem like he could eat me, and that's no small feat. After all, I myself could eat at least 3/4ths of the members on this site- AT ONCE. He almost terrified me to my very core until I realized I'm mobile enough to outrun him.

I thought it was implied that I did when I told you I had sex with her. Perhaps I should have been more obvious. I took my penis and put it in your mommy's Jew coochiebag. I mean, I wasn't sold on the overweight middle-agedom, but her Jewness got me. For the record, there is precedence for this.

I noticed the girls that primarily speak Portuguese or Spanish cry "Oi!" instead of "Oh!" when they pretend to have an orgasm. Your mom went with "Oy, vey!" and I just couldn't resist.

For the record though, the only overweight middle aged women I'll fuck are Jews and Paraguayans.

If anyone's into mountain biking, my brother just bought a brand new Specialized Epic: http://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCBkModel.jsp?spid=22022 It cost around £1500 which is a shitload more than I'd pay for a push bike but he's just started competing in the junior UK championship.

You know, every European languange uses "coming" as a euphemism for orgasm.
Except for the Spanish and Portugese, who shout "!I'm leaving!" when they 'cum'.

I am so proud of myself! We have a few maple trees behind my barn where I've been piling up stray branches for the past few years and dumped logs there about 10 years ago. In fact the trees weren't there when they were put there. But anyways, I wanted to burn them which required moving the whole works onto another area where I could gradually burn them. It took about 2 or 3 hours to do it, but I did the whole thing. I did more lunges, bending, stretching, sawing, pruning into smaller pieces, yanking old wood out of the ground, squating, and had a beautiful fire going too. I had a phone book I used pages from for a fire starter so when I was on the downside of the job I opened that up and sat on it for awhile to watch it burn down.
Last night I went out to rake the debris back onto the pile and I'll be darned if I didn't feel heat and it started smouldering.
While I was in the kitchen my leg buckled from fatigue and I've been a bit stiff, but other than that I feel great. Tighter abs and my legs feel stronger. I snitched some of Bob's whey powder when I came in the house and drank lots of water. Even my back feels good today. I only wish I'd done this 30 years ago.

What's your opinion with regard Brown Rice Protein? One of your enemy's (naturopath) recommended me a protein powder called pro-zone because of my kidneys, said it would be more beneficial than whey in my case.

Now, you've got PKD, don't you...

I think I already partially answered this question. From memory, doctors are only moderately certain that animal protein specifically accelerates kidney damage in more than one condition (we have the most unbelievable problems trying to be certain about things like this!) I've read a few nephrology journals and they're pretty clear about not knowing. I think it would be prudent to avoid protein supplementation unless directly after a workout.

From memory, brown rice protein is not a particularly flash protein when it comes to BV (biological value). Pea protein, together with rice protein, is usually the choice of successful veg. and vegan athletes.

It is very difficult to answer this question rationally as there is not only evidence both ways, but I have to weigh it up with my hatred of naturopaths and immediate distrust of their advice...

Good job cunt.

Im not deadlifting these days. Instead, Im working on powercleans and highpulls. I'll do that for awhile before going back to deadlifting. Im planning on getting into powerlifting after the summer though.

That's cool. I'd like to start doing powercleans too. There is a powerlifters club close to where I live I was thinking I'd join it, not to compete just to get help with training and lifting heavy ass weights.

So, FBS, what exactly is the lactic acid workout you spoke of, and what's involved in it?

'Lactic acid programs' have a few things in common.

1) They use big, multi-joint exercises.
2) Consequently, they use large muscle groups.
3) They involve performing a large amount of work in a short amount of time which produces large amounts of lactate.
4) They are the most effective way to drop fat.
5) They are fucking HORRIBLE. They hurt like rape. They are not for beginners.

Example 1
Example 2

Plenty of theory in those articles as well. You'll see what I mean more or less immediately. If you don't have a weights room, the following protocol will give you an idea of how these programs can feel:

1) Run 400m at about 80% speed
2) Rest 45 seconds
3) Repeate 7 more times

I'd say enjoy, but you won't.

looks interesting, and extremely painful. Are there any specific things that can be done to "prepare" for this sort of thing? Like i said, I've only taken a beginning weights class, but i have int. and adv. next year, so maybe there's some extra things i can do in those classes that would help me get ready for such an intense program?

Oh and deadlifts - what are those? From the description, it seems to me they're a lot like power cleans. I haven't seen any pictures of what the movement is like though.

Deadlifts are pretty much the first pull of the powerclean - you lift the bar up from the floor to an erect standing position. You obviously use way more weight for a deadlift than for any sort of clean though. How come you know what a powerclean is, but you don't know a deadlift? Is that what they show you first at american school weight training classes?

I never actually got taught either one in my class, because i was just in beginning weights. We did the basics - bench press, incline press, leg curls/extensions, squats, curls, tricep pushdowns, lat pulldowns, etc. I just saw power clean on the board for a different class's routine once and i asked a kid who's been lifting weights for a few years what it was and he showed me. I'm sure in intermediate i'd be shown deadlift though.

My first real workout was last night and I did biceps with my old workout buddy. I'm not going to rush into it..I was only curling 25lbs per arm, half of what I used to do.

I also have nasty purple stretch marks on my biceps from working out in Mexico, as I was using terrible gym equipment there. Any ideas on how to get rid of them? Should I buy some sort of fat people cream?

That's kinda fucked they use stuff like leg curls as basics, it's not like you really need to learn that shit anyway. Deadlifts on the other hand...

3) Slow down, walk 45-60 sec
4) Do it again, 12 times
5) Die

Say, how do you adequately warm up for this kind of exercise? And since I'm looking for something that will burn body fat and increase cardiovascular endurance: will this little scheme do the trick? I guess it will, but just asking.

It will increase your cardiovascular endurance to the point where you'll be good at 15-20 second sprints, but not much beyond that, since it isn't a continuous run.

hey fbs, i was thinking about this at work but our internet crapped out...would that interval training apply to weights too? say i was doing curls and did a bunch of reps with a smaller weight then switched to something a bit heavier for a little? or does it pretty much only work with things like running, swimming, riding a bike, etc. ?

Warm up: run around a bit, not too hard, 5-10 minutes. Stretch after, if you feel like it. And yes, a program like that (interval sprints) is the kind of thing I'd think of first for fat loss if you weren't already experienced with weights.

'Interval training' is just a format of doing something. It'll work with anything that you can, well, do in intervals. I've already written about interval training with weights in this thread. The 'lactic' programs previously posted are timed-interval workouts, from memory.

Also. Curls suck. Check out the 'complex' program from before.

I have to brag. I've been wearing my pedometer from the time I get up til bedtime and yesterday I walked over 5 1/2 miles, over 7,000 steps for the first time since I've gotten it, and burned over 1500 calories just from that. It's a combo pedometer. And I've had one of my god awful headachs for the past couple days, including today, and I still did that.

Bob's moved the treadmill to the garage by the weight machine so that may come in handy on rainier days, but I'm psyched.

I haven't worked out for two weeks. I'm sick and I'm tired but got damn it would be nice to get back in the gym.

fbs: Aaah Kevin Nee has been on the strongman stuff on Eurosport a few times. He's fucking huge and looks like a bear. That's why I am training, to get strong and look like a bear .

That last lift didn't look like it had very good form though.

In a strongman comp, no one's going to say anything about your form, so you do what it takes to finish the lift. And after a whole deadlift medley he probably doesn't give a shit about much other than getting the bar up.

I been working out at the gym, been going good. Was taking Creatine and Real Gains but it ended up making me sick, partly cause I was drinking way less water during the days though.

That's weird. Shoulders are pissy little things that don't really need a lot of direct training. Do you squat?

Well, I train in a 'home gym' - problem is, I'm stuck in a small room, so I only got place for the basic equipment, which means I can only train my upper body (read: everything except legs). Fortunately, I'm moving by the end of June so I'll be getting a barbell rack. I'll be doing squats and other leg exercices from then on.

Why do you ask? I don't see the connection between squats and shoulders.

The kind of people who have a "shoulder day" or whatever often have this thing about not squatting because it hurts, is heavy, or some other dumb excuse. I guess that's why he asked. Not sure if that's the case with you, anyway.

Don't worry. You will never get there without hard training for the next 5-10 years + steroids and synthol.

You don't need a rack to train legs. Get some of this action:

Nope, like I said: as soon as I get more room, I'll be doing the legs - no excuses.

@Slabbefusk: I know - That guy is juicing big time. And it's ugly. And he can't run anymore. Haha.

@far_beyond_sane: yeah, I was thinking about pistols yesterday. I'll look into some of those exercices. Thanks for the tip.

Me too. Pistols are why quads were invented.

If you want more leg training stuff without a rack, I got looooooooooooads.

Well, if you can pass on some links/sites/descriptions, that'd be great. Especially for the calves. The only one I know is standing with your toes on an inch's height, put a weight on your shoulders, and start pushing up. Now that I think of it, I could do that with dumbbells as well.

Btw: what routine do you use? I've done MAX-OT for 5 months, now I start using German Volume Training (10x10) too. After reading on some forums, there seem to be many other efficient routines as well (Bill Starr 5x5, Rippletoe, ...) but I'm tired of reading up entire pages, so I'll just stick with what I'm doing right now.

Bill Starr's 5x5 is awesome. Routines made by O-lifting coaches in general seems to be great.

I use a monstrously bastardised version of conjugate periodisation. It's complicated and chaotic. On a very basic level - posterior chain, an overhead movement, general torso, grip and general back each get hit twice a week, always once with heavy weights and once either with speed work or rep work. Explaining beyond that would be confusing for both of us.

What is far more important than what routine you use is completing the routine you're on. If you're doing GVT, make sure you finish it.

Fuck I did back/biceps yesterday after a hold-up for two weeks. It feels like I was gangraped by a negroid tribe.

Just ordered the book "Science and Practice of Strength Training". The westside people seems to think this book is the bible, so it's hopefully worth the cash.

It's very good, but very dry.

this is probably going to get all the "metalhead hardcore brutall asses" in a laughing riot.
I hit a milestone today on my journey to becoming physically fit... I did my first real push-ups of my entire life today.
I feel like I've accomplished something.

I have a 150lb weight set and a bench. I need to buy at least a 100 more pounds, I'm benching all of it in large reps and I'm still kinda a skinny little shit.

dont do that.
start out at like 90 maybe
do 12 reps per set
ad like 10 pounds per set

if you cant do 12 then you have too much weight and you wont gain anything.
