Dropping a band member or dropping yourself
Alright heres the deal:
I started a band with 2 friends and one guy that I knew a little from a few encounters. Now, from the beginning, my friends and I had our minds set on playing music similar to Pain of Salvation (of course with our own little twists). We had this other guy join since he has an always-available place for us to practice, and a ton of recording equipment. So I made a deal with him that I would write all the music (with the assitance of one of my friends on drums) and in return he could sing and write all the lyrics. So I wrote 2 elaborate songs that I am very proud of and he started cementing lyrics about 17 year old girls and such. (For example, one song starts with an atmospheric keyboard interlude with some classical acoustic fingerpicking and an Aeolian solo, all of this took me about a week to analyze and perfect, and out of nowhere shitty lyrics about a girl thats wearing herself out come in). Not to mention his voice sucks. He even raped lyrics that I wrote specifically for a song. And on top of all of this he wants to change the band name from Remedy Lane to "With Open Eyes" or some stupid shit like that.
Anyway, the issue:
How can I eloquently tell him to either:
A) Get the fuck out
or
B) Stop writing shitty lyrics and sing better
Or if worst comes to worst, how can I eloquently leave the band myself and take my music with me?

Oh, he also took it upon himself to make us a shitty myspace page (against my trying arguments). On which we have some stupid friends.
What an extortionate price to pay to make music.

why dont you do it like everyone else does it... LIE!!!
seriously, if you cant stand him then just tell him to leave... you dont need to be nice about it either... especially if hes pissing off your band mates too... just get a job or borow some money, go to a professional studio to get it done... without annoying assholes to screw with it...
EDIT: if your friends dont see eye to eye with you on this plan, just say, like other musicians have said manny a time, "we have some musical differences, blah blah blah..."
good luck with that

Tell him to fuck off. If you don't like his singing, its no use using your hard written riffs on some shitty vocalist with his shitty lyrics that he undoubtably wrote when he was twelve.

There isn't much worse than having a great sounding band that's right on time and as soon as the vocalist opens their mouth it makes you want to call a vet with a big horse tranquilizer. It can really ruin things.
I don't know if you could tell him specifically that's not what you want as far as lyrics go and if he wants to do those on his own fine, but that's not the band's preference. You could start practicing somewhere else without him and without him knowing for awhile. You could even tell him you're doing that.
I'm not sure how to claim your music though. You'd have to have some type of date stamp on it. You can record it and mail it registered to yourself so you have to sign for it and there's a postal record of it. Then don't open it unless its with a lawyer. Other than that it's copyright office stuff I think.
Good luck to you. POS is a darn good group.

Actually, my friends aren't the problem...the guy that I've only met a few times is the issue.

you should only make a band with friends if you both agree on the same music, and both have the same wishes/ideals for the band.

I have backups of all my tabs, on disc, so that if I give them to someone, or someone rips my shit, I have a backup with documented proof. Trust me, I've worried about this too.

I'm trying to quit this band but this guy just won't let me go. I just want to say "fuck off" but without actually saying "fuck off"
I've tried the following:
"I just don't think this is going to work, our musical aspirations are too different"
"I kind of want to be that anti-pop band that doesn't have any ties with those shitty bands in the scene"
"I feel the urge to make all of our songs 20 minutes, and I know you're not into that"
He won't take the fucking hint that I don't want to have anything to do with him musically.

arrange it to were he's not the leader of the band and has only 5 mins of singing out of the 20. he can say his crap, but it will mostly be insturmental like symphony X. cuz thats what most singers want. they want it to be where their recognized as the leader, even though there's nothing really musical about singing. LA.LA LA LA LA. i sound like frank sonatra.

Bada bing. I'm out.
Now I'm impatient so instead of dropping anymore subtle hints I finally said "You know what, I'm out, clear?"
And was struck back with the witty retort "Are you kidding? Fine man whatever, your fuckin loss, just don't try to get back in when were playing big shows"
He seems to have forgotten I wrote all of their music and the only instrument they'll be able to emulate is drums

Make him eat his words.
I bet that's a load off your mind now. Bob went back to his one band a couple times, but finally said no more. His next band was really fun for him to play in. All the guys are still friends though now even though there was some tension for awhile. He didn't know anyone in his last band though. But I recognized the lead guitarist as a kid I'd had in my Sunday School class almost 15 years before. that flipped me right out. Bob didn't remember him though.

A) Get the fuck out
You made the band, you don't need to leave, and all three of you want to do something your way. You don't need expensive recording equipment anyways, it will still sound good.
[EDIT: Didn't read that you left. Oh well.....uh, start a new one.]

Well I gathered my 2 friends, and we're starting over and in search for a singer.
So it looks like "my loss" was his loss.

haha. good job. dont look for a sing. u dont need a singer. insturmental is what u need to look into. make the parts equal. as in a drum solo, a bass solo, a guitar solo, guitar duel with bass and drums.ect...cuz that was the main reason why i didnt go have a band. cuz they bitch about not getting their chance to step up and solo. just be fair. ask for ideas if anyone has any.
i guess u could say. share the wealth

Exellent. If you can't find one, it can always be insturmental, or with minimalistic vocals, which is kinda what I am doing with my band when its up and running.

I would say - you style isnt what we are looking for, we have really different ideas of what the music should sound like. To be honest your lyrics and vocal style doesnt match the music.
And see if you can get him to sing like you want, if not coem upp with some shit to get out of the band lol.
Do the other band members agree with how you feel??

Thats what I did. I don't like the cockyness of singers. The type of music I want to play, I feel that lyrics would interfere. I want it to be all about the music, not some frontman who thinks he IS the band.
So thats why my main band is an instrumental band through and through. Except for maybe spoken word, but I'd only include things that the entire band agreed with.

And this really is the best way to approach it. There really is no need to be a dick. No point in walking away on bad terms.

Don't assume, Bill. The thread isn't about you, and all the personal plugging you did doesn't change that.
If 3/4 of a band disagrees with the remaining quarter, there's no need to go all kid gloves about it. Don't wake him up with a bus ticket to California, but don't tip toe around it either. You basically kicked him out as it was, but without the balls. Next time do it with the balls.

yeah, i recently quit my band, of course everything with the last remaining member was ok after i quit until 1>i arrange to rercord my old bands stuff for a small release 2>may do a project with a prior member who was sorta forced out
what irks me the most is when bandmates act like the shit is marriage, like what this one dude is doing, treating the situation as betrayal, which its far from. also the dude was trying to insinuate that i was blaming him for the forcing of the prior member to leave, which was true in a way, but not a subject i brought up when quitting.
in this band the one dude literally alienated everyone we worked with. suffocating them with his presence after jams, treating them with suspicion constantly, comming to me in private saying "i think so-and-so is trying to force me out of the band", holding grudges and playing mindgames with other members, over and over i had to deal with people on the leaving end saying to me in private that they will not work with the dude again.
this was a situation i didnt feel the need to address to him because i witnessed it and KNOW he does it, there is no point in arguing with him.......so he is self consious because HE knows he does it, and i dont want to get into that debate simply cause its silently KNOWN between us and he will vehemently deny it ensuing fuggin drama, my other reasons should be more than enough justification<this guy is my roomate as well>, so i tell him im tired of ressurecting the band after people leave<2 guitar players, 1 singer>,i am sick of the lack of communication between us and other members and the painfully awkward way we have been working on new stuff until i quit. and most importantly im not into it anymore....and other projects, new band situations is the best thing for us now. ive been in this band 3 years, we all have plenty ammunition on each other for a real long session of the blamegame, which i dont want to deal with<i freely admit things i done and said in the past as being insulting or wrong, mind you>, because...........its not a marriage, its a band, bands come and go. it should be no big deal as now it seems
but i should of been completely honest is all, im kinda conflicted about it. so kalmah i can see where you just want to depart without drama, without the blamegame and bullshit. my situation is similiar in some ways, im working on new stuff with a past member now, my old band includes the singer who tried to work with this band. im kinda aloof in person, i feel the blamegame and a total all out fuck you is not somewhere i want to go when leaving this band, thats what it will boil down too if i was honest

Yea, I have my songs, and both band members. The only chance of me getting my songs stolen from him now is if he somehow figures out how to emulate riffs and such that I never taught him or recorded for him.

If 3/4 of a band disagrees with the remaining quarter, there's no need to go all kid gloves about it. Don't wake him up with a bus ticket to California, but don't tip toe around it either. You basically kicked him out as it was, but without the balls. Next time do it with the balls.

This once pissed a certain person off so much that Megadeth was born

I guess we can thank Metallica for that.

You mean the post starting the thread, Bill, you egomaniacal insect rapist? The entire thread's been about his band, not your little self-love project. It would all be fine if you'd just admit you erased it because your incredible self-obsession blinded you to the obvious, but you'd rather lash out like your shit didn't stink and any criticism would have to be out of ignorance.
Dave would've probably done the entire Megadeth thing even if he'd been kicked out in a civil and kindly manner. Just that kind of personality.
What's vocal-boy up to now?

It's best to be honest but if cross dressing is your thing the above might work!!!
Had a couple of experiencies with having to kick people out of bands. The first involved a singer who was a really nice bloke, but he wrote lyrics even Saxon would have been embarrassed about and he started fastening silk scarfs to his mic stand. Eventually his psuedo Axl Rose nassle whine pissed off the drummer and being the pro-active buggers they are, he asked me to get rid of him! So we went for a beer and I told him he wasn't quiet what we were looking for, he agreed, took it really well and everyone remained friends!
Another time it was a bass player. He spotted our ad, rang up and we arranged a jam. He at this point decided he was in the band and moved from his home town to ours(this was even before we'd heard him play a note). Alarm bells should have been ringing at this point!!
Turns out he was terrible, his bass amp sounded like a washing machine on fast spin with a shagged bearing, trying to remove the skids out of a fat blokes under crackers! Worse was to come....he wanted to do some of his compositions...he played the tape...imagine a very drunk Nirvana playing cast off Celtic Frost tunes whilst wearing boxing gloves!!!
Any way we didn't have the heart to tell him straight away..BIG MISTAKE!!!
He thought he was in the band and followed us around everywhere, I mean like restraining order type following around everywhere!!
In the end the rest of the band decided I should tell him that he wasn't what we were looking for(thanks guys) so I did, and he got upset and started crying!!!!!!
To make matters worse everyone thought I must have been really horrible to him to provoke that kind of response!!

Yeah, We sure did
A while ago we tried to work out just how many bass players we had join, I think it was 13 or so. Everyone has a funny story involved!
In the end a guitarist took pity on us and joined on bass duties. He hooked us up with a really good singer as the one we were trying out wanted to be Henry Rollins, again nice bloke but old Hank Rollins does a little more than just shout down a microphone like a teenage tantrum cuz mommy wants you to tidy the room! I digress...things were going cool for a while till the bass player got frustrated guitarist syndrome and formed a soft rock band and legged it with the singer! Last I saw they were doing Whitesnake ballads!!!!!??????
