what to play when trying out instrument at shop?
I was just wondering what some of you fellas play when you try out a Guitar, Bass, etc. when you go to a music store? And what distinguishes the sound you're looking for?

first i look for a guitar that looks good (Floyd/Khaler bridge, cool paint etc...), then i try it out. i look for a guitar that can handle good distortion aswell as clean chanel. also i look for a guitar that feels good and eazy to play in my hands.

Just anything, scales, arpeggios, etc. I usually don't play any songs. And if I do know one would know what it is anyway.

I always seem to play one of the first songs I ever learnt. [It just happens to be a Berzerker song]. The reason for this is because you've known this song forever, you've played it on other guitars before, and you probably played it more than any other song. You know how you want it to sound, you know the best tone for it, you KNOW THE SONG!
You can then compare the way the guitar feels for the song and sounds for the song compared to what you know and love.

I donīt play any difficult songs, because when you play this , is like you`re more concentrated in the song that in the guitar (like you,re trying to demostrate waht you know), so normally I donīt play a lot of songs. I look if it has natural harmonics in the 2nd 3rd 5th 7th, etc etc look how much sustain it has. I usually play the G major chord to know if it has good open chords(without gain) , and last, but not least how the pickups work (this inludes how they sound without playing, what is thw diference betwenn one pickup position and the others-I like the neck pickup to sound smooth, and the middle to sound crystalinand the bridge one heavy as fuck!!!-). And then you play something like fifths (slow and fast), thirds, forths, 8ths and artificial harmonics. I donīt know why, but I play a lot of Behemoth.
I hope itīll help to somebody.

The best thing is to play stuff that you would normally play if you were at home jamming or practicing. So if you're in a band, play some of those riffs, (makes sense if you'll be playing the guitar in your band) Try stuff with palm muting, picked parts and pinch harmonics, really test drive the guitar.
Abuse hell out of the trem to see if it holds tuning. Play with all the buttons and dials. Play some lead and scales, check the sustain.
Try it clean also.
Play it through the same amp and set up that you already own so you'll know how it will sound once you get it home.
Don't play Enter Sandman, Teen Spirit, Smoke On The Water or Stairway To Heaven

I play Crazy Train and Bark At The Moon. I think I just like annoying the guys at the counter with the 50th rendition of Crazy Train they have to hear in a day.

Because the people in stores will have heard those songs a million times, and you will irritate the hell out of them by playing it again, followed by you promptly being escorted out of the store

When Bob would go looking, he'd play several and then sit down somewhere comfy and just jam doing random stuff. I went with him when he was "just looking" for a 12 string. He played quite a few before settling on the Yamaha we took home after "just looking."
When he got his first electric, a Sebring, it was at a friend's shop and Bob was a little nervous about playing so the guy played some stuff after Bob got the feel of it and they talked about the different capabilities it had like putting a Floyd rose on it and stuff like that.
So basically just some random stuff, but if it was me, since I'm not too great at it, I'd get the feel of it and let whoever went with me that's got more expertise show me what it could do. Everybody i knew at the guitar store had played my Gibson before I bought it so I knew what it would sound like.

Almost everytime I go into a shop....I hear mostly people playing loud clean crispy melodys and most are quite talented.
I'll take an axe over to a really nice tube amp and whip out some Judas Priest or some Megadeth and more often than not get a small crowd gathering. Then come the comments....Damn...you play good for a girl.

Even though those aren't things I'd be playing I'd sure tell them that that was rude and walk out of the store. Whatever happened to being there for the customer and not the other way around? I'm glad I'm old skool.

BUT thats just it i love the older generation music
i hate playing this new crap.i told you guys and girls
about it because basically it sucks that you have to play a certain type of music or get kicked out.
i mean when i first started to play guitar
i went with my friend to the store looking to buy a starter
guitar and my friend even said chris if your gonna try a guitar
there are rules....and then he told me what i can and cant play

Hazzah! I'm not the only one who plays Priest tunes in music shops The only difference is people crowd round and then come the comments...what the hell was that you were trying to play?
I can't believe that shops actually inforce this 'banned song' rule, I mean it started out as a joke thing with Smoke On The Water years ago (and all it did was prompt people to play it more!!!)
I'm lucky as my mate works in my local music shop so I can play any old crap I like and the only chastising I'm likely to incur is a pitying look from him!

I suppose I could sit down, warble and play "Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road." That's not on the list. The thing with our shops we had was that they wanted the people to get interested in music, not save salespeople's ears or keep them from being bored or crazy. I bought a trombone kazoo where I bought my Gibson. It was cool, but I think it got sat on. The slide even worked. And years later, Jr. was about 5 and we stopped there walking home and I bought us each a regular one and we played them walking home.
That's just discouraging to disallow certain songs. Just like some other damn forums censor the type of lyrics you post. Funk that crap!!! Dont' get me wound up. It's not pretty.

For drums, FF's replica intro, and just random crap to hear all the toms.
For keyboards, a song by a local band Empyrean, Mistress Cunt, My Dying Bride's Cry Of Mankind riff, and random Children Of Bodom riffs. Also, Greensleeves.

weight... if its too heavy, i'll say fuckit... no les pauls for me
how tight the neck is on bolt ons (i try to shove my pick inbetween the neck and body... if it fits... the sustain will probably suck)
check sustain
thickness of neck (if its too thick, i wont be able to play Circle of the Tyrants )
pinch harmonics
natural harmonics (and the high ones up by the 3rd fret)
check the mud of the pups... just play muddy chords with lots of lows.. and see if I can hear the highs
and lastly... i get a strap and see if its comfortable to play when i'm standing
i'm not too concerned with the sound if it plays well, because i can just change the pickups if i really have to...

Anything by Dying Fetus will surely test the mettle of any amplifier ... For me any stack has to go through "Praise The Lord" and "One Shot One Kill" before I will approve it ...

True, but the riffs in those songs run the gamut of modern metal riffing ... Which is why Dying Fetus is an essential case study for anyone looking to master death metal stylings of guitar ... and essential for bludgeoning prospect amplifiers : articulation is key in this genre.

since my local guitar shop sucks, ive only been 3 times. but for some reason the owner there saw me playing some guitar with no amp or anything and he hooked up a stack, turned the volume up and told me to play. I dont really like these situations, but i played what came to mind, and it was In flames-everdying.

Hey thanks.
I still fall very short on Angel Of Death but am not giving up.
My problem is....there are too many tunes I try attempt to master and should really concentrate on them more selectively instead of all at once.

I checked out a PRS Santana SE when i went into the shop and just pissed around with it.
Did some stuff harmonics, bends, few runs ect. Had a real nice feel to it, and it was the cheapest PRS - though i was checking it out coz there was a 2nd hand one I saw for muuch cheaper.
Played the stairway to heaven solo 'i know, i know'
Black Rose Immortal solos
Few opeth riffs and solos in clean.
The guy working there said he was suprised that I had taught that much myself in a year.
I was gonna check out their custom shop PRS but at $6000 nz, i wasnt that keen to play around with it lol.

Yeah may as well.. ive given up on this thread lol.
but would you guys also give names of songs you would consider playing, as i can't play any of the songs mentioned here need confidence dammit what characteristics would you be looking for with Black Metal, and what with Death Metal, except for Dying Fetus Holland - i havent attempted their stuff
and how much gain? so much that the guitar produces feedback when not being played?
sorry for the complicated-yet-shitty post

Black metal, you want clarity and a RAZOR sharp tone. This dosn't go to say that you put the bass down and the treble up, fiddle with the settings. Although for Black metal you really should have the treble up. I have a sick Black metal tone with mid bass and treble all the way up, just my pickups and guitar has a naturally sharp tone which is great.
Death metal you want both bottom end with bass, but you want good highs aswell for
pinch harmonics and the contrasting high note lines that DM tends to have somewhere in the songs.
Either way sustain is great! Make sure you have good sustain.
Hope that helps

I just play random crap and make people think I suck. Then, when these guitar dweebs try to plug in next to me and show off I start playing solos. I am very good at solos too, and improvising them. I have had dweebs ask me to play in their band simply for playing random pull offs all over the place.
I actually suck really bad. *laughs out loud*

Yeah no shit! I'm looking at a Gibson flying V at the moment. It is too pricey for how sub-par it plays. Great tone, mediocre fretboard action.
I notice Schecters sweep like shit. I like ESP quite a bit. I noticed Les Paul's are not for shredding, at least in my book they aren't. And the chords sound like shit, too much resonance.
Basically, I play everything form the 12th fret to 22/24th fret while checking out a guitar. If I dig the action whilst shredding I'll play some Tornado of Souls or maybe something like Pure Holocaust. Something I am familiar with. If you pick up a guitar and try to play the hardest thing you know you are likely to fuck up because well...it's still hard to you,
