Anyone here share music by Kazaa or Winmx etc? are any of you worried about the RIAA and how there stamping down on more people, and sueing a lot more for Illegally sharing music..

Do you have ways to prevent anyone tracing your ISP for that reason?

im pretty sure its legal somehow in france but I dont think any of us are from there. when I dl shit its usually bootleggs or videos shit the artists done make money on anyway. though when I do get albums its usually from people on aim so theres no tracking involved

Most of you here are american, i thought it was more understandable if i said that, but some teenage girl ..locally.. recently got fined £2500 for downloading music.. so they do it here now and then. But sueing the odd person isnt going to stop people downloading music, as there are millions of people doing it..

Just wanted to see your views on how they are doing it and why.

im saving money. no local stores carry my kind of music. cds cost too much. what cds they do have are usually imports, so youre talking 30 bucks per cd. buying cds on ebay doesnt help the recording industry anyways. i will ALWAYS support a metal band and see them in concert. usually spend 20 bucks per band at the merch stand if i like the band

and i like free music

i trade albums over AIM so theres no tracking as far as i know, like demon said

i use a free kazaa-lite.. best downloading system ever.. the ironic thing is i'm stealing music using kazaa-lite, but i'm also stealing kazaa-lite, beczause it normaly costs, and i got it for free via google search i'm also not worried because i'm canadian

From the way I understand it the sueing of the random kid downloading 40 or 50 tunes recieved very unpopular reviews by the general public and they have now focused on the big guys Serving 1000s of files. They say that .edu ior college servers are the worst offenders and that is going to be their focus here in the US.

From what I've gathered when it first came out, bit torrent was created as the only legal way to download music/videos--instead of pirating the mp3 itself, you only get bits and pieces of the file, so you have to seed it to other users, yadda yadda yadda, it's legal becaause it's not the whole song....

I do not use Kazaa, WinMX, or Limewire. I use Bit Torrent, but it's still just as tracable as the rest. They seed it, and just take down IP's. Bittorrent is primarly used to share warez, but is also used legitimately. One primary reason the bittorrent protocol was developed was for the md5 file verification built right into the protocol, no more downloading a 1GB porn and half doesn't check out, it downloads a piece then file checks it, if it doesn't equal out, it discards that piece and re-requests it. That's why I love bittorrent. If your concerned with the RIAA, and yes they are watching bittorent too, actually very heavy currently, your safest way to download would be to use a proxy for your bittorrent client. That way if a government official was seeding a file you was downloading and was recording IP's, it would not be your real IP in the pool.

For those who don't know what a proxy is, it's simply a computer running somewhere in the world accepting anonymous connections from anyone. It's crazy, ... you could actually not have a internet connection, and use proxies to play online all day. Bad thing about routing your connection through a proxy is speed, it's generally slower to relay off a proxy, and your bound to be disconnected from one quite often. If your interested, there's programs that take in lists of 1000's of proxies, recycle the fastest, and automatically keep you connected the the fastest ones, for COMPLETE anonymity on the internet. Heh, sorry for the essay. Damn computer science degree runs wild sometimes.... Lemme know if you have any questions I may help with, or want to know more about proxies, or whatever, be glad to help.

My biggest gripe about the p2p thing is that "back when I was a kid" we used to share records or tape songs off the radio and it was no big deal as long as you weren't selling them. As long as you're just using the tunes without gaining anything monetarily, I can't see what the harm is. I know when I was doing it I found out about a lot more artists and was more apt to buy music if I liked songs they did. I knew about more of tha bands you folks talk about that's for sure. I bet I haven't bought more than 2 cd's all year. Pain of Salvation and a Nick Cave. They've lost money on me.

I always had 67 cents for a 45rpm and when I had a really good week babysitting I could afford $6 or $7 for an album.

Yes, it's a good program, but very unsafe. Limewire uses public servers. I would recommend using Direct Connect for the majority of hubs are hosted privately, less likely chance of being tracked. There's also an excellent selection of metal hubs, best are the swedish ones... Lemme know if you have any more questions I can help with.
