I've just lost any respect I had in religion
Read this and be prepared to feel the overtures of disgust swathe upon you.
How? Just how? My faith in humanity is truly waning.

Its appauling that this kind of abuse happens still, that poor girl is gonna be so traumatised for the rest of her life. People like that don't deserve to go to prison, they should be put in 'no limits' stocks, where people can do whatever they want to them, and they're just left to rot, fucking scum!

I like the idea of putting these bastards in stocks - maybe they could experience how it feels to have chili peppers rubbed in their eyes.

Don't hijack this thread, ballbag. He isn't talking shit to anybody, he's commenting on how stupid those so-called adults are for letting religious beliefs lead them to believe that one of their loved ones is possessed by a demon and as a result of trying to drive the demon out, torturing said loved one. The loved one in question is an 8 year old girl.
Ian's right; it is fucking stupid.

We hear stories like this often. Mostly demon possesion....the Witch aspect was a twist.
This is no surprise to me...followers of a religion where even the most horrible sin is instantly forgiven and all based on a book that has been twisted so many times and has zero credit....yes....this doent shock me at all.
Execute them. Fuck it.

It doesn't even say it was religion based, but if they were from Angola it's hard to say why they did it. It's truely sad that there are people who still do things like this, but if they think they're doing right they will continue until they learn otherwise. In a lot of places children have no rights and are nothing more than property. This child was an orphan --like I was.

The report on BBC news this evening carried undertones of religion and I believe the reporter's final summation was, "...all for the sake of religious beliefs."

I knew someone who used to hit their child with a "rod" because of their interpretation of "spare the rod and spoil the child." It was because of the way the church taught. Had I worked at Children's Services and known what I know now I would have said something to the people and if that wasn't enough, reported the church.
A woman seperated from her husband and was awarded custody recently because she feared for her life and her kids' lives. She was knifed to death the night before she was due to leave the state. The church had allegations against it for 5 fucking years and nothing could be done about the abuse and sexual misconduct because it couldn't be proven. It's about 5 miles from me!!
Please, please, please, if you know of any child being abused or acting something other than normal talk to someone about it. The only way it can be stopped is re-education or removal from the problem. Learn about some of the warning signs. If the child manages to grow up thinking those things are normal behavior they will continue the behavior.

I heard about this case when it first came to light a couple of months back, my view on humanity has been pounded even further and futher lower, along with what happened to that five-year-old kid the other day.

More and more my belief in religion is turning into a crock of shit.
It has been that way for the past couple of years. I am Agnostic now, and its seems to be the best path. I believe in myself, not something I can't see or touch...just what someone tells me to believe...total bullshit.
It is so wrong to abuse a defenseless child. I could understand spanking if the child does wrong...but chili peppers in the eyes??? What the fuck man??

I used to do that, and people rejected it.
Ok lets try it then. This is only minor anyway and I'll probably only get minimal shit for it.
I really could not care less. Crazy shit happens everyday. I was not shocked, I wasn't angry, I wasn't sad or happy. I see shit like this on the news since I was old enough to understand what was happening around me. This is just everyday shit, and wheather it were to have happened to a little kid or an adult it wouldn't be shocking.
Look, I've done it so many times on this board and I'm not about to do it again: Justify myself. Accept it or leave what I say alone.

Infinity-- I think you said why you feel the way you do in a nutshell when you said it didn't cause a reaction becasue you'd seen it so much before. It's desensitization. Yes, things are going to happen like this and it's not going to go away. You're entitled to your opinion as much as the next person. If you started doing this practice we'd have to lynch ya though. j/k
What if, when asked why this was done, the adults said it was their practice and that's what they'd been taught growing up? What if they really believe in demon possession? I believe in a lot of things, but I personally don't believe in that at all. But what if they're taught another way or to see the children as human beings? What if drugs were a factor? One of my major deterents to not doing weird stuff was many years ago when I heard of a woman on pcp putting her baby in a frying pan. I still cannot fathom anyone letting themself get so out of control. I could never do anything that would endanger like that.
This is the only article I've read about this child so maybe there's answers to my questions already.

How can anybody not be moved by that little girl's ordeal? This girl was tortured by people she trusted and loved - it made my heart sink to hear and read what she endured from the people who are supposed to cherish her the most.
Abusing young children is the lowest and most cowardly act a person can exact. I don't have kids and I therefore cannot put myself in a position whereby I can understand how a parent would feel if it was my child being abused in this fashion, but my heart goes out to this kid. I hope she somehow regains a modicum of normality after her scars have healed.
I certainly don't find this incident funny or humorous in any way and those who do obviously have trouble empathising with others. Put yourself in this little girl's shoes and imagine how it would be to be her for just one second: Betrayed by the people who love you; tortured by the people who love you; abandoned by the people who love you. This girl has nobody in her life to help her come to terms with the harrowing events she endured, only social services and a life spent in foster homes.
This is a tragic travesty. Fortunately we can forget it as we down another pint, as we get to the next level of Doom and as we churn out another arpeggio. This girl is privvy to no such luxuries, so spare a thought.

Poor kid
I hear these same kinda stories every single day on the news here. It is so depressing to hear it all. Yesterday a couple were arrested for killing their baby by throwing it from a moving car.

Many good points, JM. I was fortunate the people who adopted me weren't weirdos of any sort.
If anyone is interested in reading about a very inspiring person who lived through an abusive mother and ignorant father read the series of books by Dave Pelzer. I own all but one. The first really sets the stage, but the others are equally important to what he's become.
The movie "Antwone Fisher" is also excellent in understanding a foster kid's challenges and it's a Navy movie too so I especially liked that. The dvd has a lot more to it that's pretty cool, too.
Richard Cardinal's story is another young man who wasn't as fortunate. If you'd like to see something of his story this was the best site I found so far. The last comments on the page are pretty much a good summary. His case changed some of child welfare, too.
http://www.arts.yorku.ca/soci/video/videos/richard.html
Dave Pelzer also has a website. http://www.davepelzer.com/aboutd.htm

Hey, I don't completely disagree with what you said. This disturbs me, but doesn't make wanna burst into tears or punch the wall or anything like that. Stuff way more fucked up than that happens everyday and we'll never hear about most of it.

I've just lost every last ounce of respect I had American Christianity.
I just finished a heated conversation with a girl :
Her - "the first Bible was written in stone!"
Me - "No .... it was'nt ... you have parchments in Cornei Greek and Hebrew. None of the books you have in your King James Bible today were written in stone."
Her - "THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, DUH!1!!1!!!!!!"
Me - "Those are'nt a book of the Bible. Besides, we don't even have those. We have papers saying that the Ten Commandments were composed on stone, we have to take the author's word for it."
Her - "That's not true! The ten commandments WERE written on stone!"
Me - "Where are they then?"
Her - "I think the Vatican might have them ... but I know"
Me - "Unless you can tell me where I can take a look at these Ten Commandments, and have some proof of authenticity beyond a shadow of a doubt, then I have to take someone's word for it. You cannot expect me to just believe that! God has never 'contacted' me in any way shape or form!"
Her - "He's still waiting for you ... just look inside your heart!"
You had might as well just ask me, "How is toothe paste good for you? YES OR NO!!!! THIS IS A YES OR NO QUESTION!!!!"
I have'nt felt this insulted in a long, long time. I would have rather had someone just stand there and slap me in the face than speak to me like parents trying to convince their child that Santa Claus is real.

Ouch. Reminds me of the time some asshole tried to tell me that carbon dating was a lie. There was a buddhist chick listening in on our argument and she and I were both astounded by the sheer audacity of those who are young, stupid, and christian.

Yes ... even if they hear from their youth pastor about someone who found a burnt down bush in the middle of the Eastern deserts they will seriously go so far as to say, "MOSES'S BU/rNIING BUSH!!1!1! What more proof do these heathens need? GAH!!!"

Yes ... even if they hear from their youth pastor about someone who found a burnt down bush in the middle of the Eastern deserts they will seriously go so far as to say, "MOSES'S BURNIING BUSH!!1!1! What more proof do these heathens need? GAH!!!"

Aww, I wanted to be God. I'll settle for the Virgin Mary!!
On topic, I don't really care. Desensitisation, as L'BXXX put it. I never cared nor had any respect for religion in the first place. Respect the individual, not the organisation.

I know this one dude who is a Christian Fumdmentalist so I rarely question him because he can get crazy about religion. They take the Bible very serious. I once asked him what he thought about the finding of Dino bones and why they were not mention in the bible.
He looked me dead in the eye and said that those bones were put there by God to test the faithful and to believe that Dinos actually lived is a sure way to be sent to Hell.

dont become the virgin mary man... i have plans to have sex with her... virgin this!! ahahaha!
But yeah, relgion isnt neccesarily (sp?) a bad thing. Its underlying statement is pretty good, usually its about how you should be good and treat people nicely and stuff. It puts down some laws to follow
but, if there was no consequence to the law, it would mean nothing. Thus christianity is cunningly made to be unquestionable, and questioning it results in damnation to somewhere not very nice.
Bible bashers are the ones who ruin religion. They are the ones who dont understand that its about the goodness, not about tossing jesus's salad, or testaments of faith, or i am holier than thou attitude. Too many people are too obsessed with following everything the bible says, and not enough with being a good person in life.
Personally, i say fuck all that shit. I was a satanist for two years, and now I'm kinda a chaote... whatever the fuck that is. I know what is right and wrong, and I do what I will accordingly.

Same here...I also have heard that Satan planted them as evidence against god.
That's the great thing about having a diety with magic powers...no matter what corner you back them into...they can always make up a reason to counter their insanity.

What a collosal crock of horse shit!!! I hope you folks realize that not all Christians are that ignorant. I felt like beating my head on the keyboard at some of the remarks. Of course there were dinosaurs!!! I knew some personally!!! A couple of kinky cavemen, too!!!
I don't profess to know even a fraction of what other's do about Christianity. I wonder what they'd say about the forgotten books of the Bible. About those ones between the Old and New Testament I found in a 1880's Bible in my attic that starts with a "A" but I can't remember the name of right now! lol
And so many think God is such a hard-ass with no sense of humor. Heck, I'd be an atheist if I didn't think he cracked a smile now and then.
Please! Don't judge us all by the beliefs of a few. To make what I think is an excellent comparison --There's many forms of Christianity just like there's many forms of metal. Some are good and some aren't. Some people are more ignorant than others. Some refuse to broaden their thinking in both. Hey, I'm game for about anything, but some things common sense takes over and some things experience and total gut feelings do.

That all sounds good on paper...but when (and I use experience only) the massive majority believe the modern bible is 100% correct and accurate...all hope is lost.
The "few" you mention seem to be the ones open for interpretation, meaning there are few that can think outside the limits of a book......MOST follow it to the letter when professing their beliefs or proselytizing.
And I havnt met a christian yet that doesnt believe the earth is somewhere around 4000 years old and deny the existance of dinosaurs or early primitive man.
I wish the ones like you mention were around...but they keep silent while their masses make fools of the religion.

Religion is not a morality.
Earth is ~4.5 billion years old, and the universe is ~ 15 billion years old.

Put there by God?
How the hell is he comfortable with the notion that GOD , is fucking with his head? That God is playing tricks on him? What kind of trust is that?
I can see God running around planting dinosaur bones --- "Hehehe, I'm a prankster God. I'm killing me!"

Massive majority? I disagree. The people you speak of are a minority if anything. The reason it seems like there are so many people like that is because they are the people that push their beliefs upon others... The rational Christians that are open to interpretation don't push their beliefs, they don't scream about how the Bible is the only absolute truth... because they don't believe it. I hope you understand what i'm saying. The closed minded people seem to outnumber the rational people because the close minded ones make themselves be heard, while the rational people don't.... I'm sorry, it's late, and it's hard for me to express my thoughts. For the record, i am 100% atheist, and i believe that religion is all bullshit. However, i don't insist that i am correct. If i did, i would be no better than the Christian elitists that we speak of.

I agree that the ones you hear most about are the ones that push themselves. Actions speak louder than words and if you're condemning your neighbor instead of treating them as you'd like to be treated you're only going to make people feel like they don't want any part of what you stand for.
I got so tired of telling Jehovah's Witnesses no, no, no when they'd come to the door so one day I told a couple that I'd be open to do a little studying with them just to see what they were all about. I told them I would not go to their church, but about 5 or 6 of us got together to read and discuss. After several get togethers I asked the group if they felt each passage was exactly what it said or if the interpretations could be different for different people. This particular group said there was only one meaning. That was the clincher for me. I do not and probably will never believe that. That was the last meeting I had with them. We parting on friendly terms, but I could now say when I was approached that I believed in the same God and wanted peace for the world, but disagreed with their beliefs. I had also compared my own Bibles to theirs and didn't like some of the changes in theirs. I'm a book lover and it could be tattered and worn ready to be pitched in the trash, but I'd keep it. However I threw away that Bible.
My reason for asking them that specific question was because I've always felt that in different stages of life and experience a passage may mean something entirely different. For instance the Song of Solomon. If I'd read that as a person having never been in love myself or as an early adolescent I could read it and understand the words, but wouldn't feel the passion of it. Reading it after experiencing wonderful, mature love makes it more relative to things I may feel in my own heart, and I can experience similar feelings that were meant in it. It's like learning something inside and out, but not really understanding it til it's put into practice. The additional knowledge of the craftsmanship of his buildings and gardens make him come even more to life.
My all time favorite chapter out of all of them in the Bible is: http://www.hope.edu/academic/religi...E/1CO/1CO13.HTM . It's referred to as the "Love Chapter." And yeah, I was one of those Jesus Freaks back in the 70's that went to the coffeehouse and hung out. That's about when I discovered it. Although passing out tracts to people on the street wasn't cool to me, I did use to type that up from another Bible I had and leave them at the library and various other places to be found. I gave them to teachers I'd give Christmas cards to sometimes. But anyways that's pretty close to the version I had that spoke to me. Over time it's meant different things to me, but it really has been a guidance to me for a very long time.
Getting back to the JW's comment, in line 11, it proves my point that even in one person things are seen through different eyes depending on the person. I don't think any one particular Bible was right and I think there are errors and a lot of lost things from it. It's the general ideas I utilize and my belief that Jesus walked, talked, and rose from the dead. If someone else doesn't believe that's their perogitive, but I think we can learn from each other.
Holy crap! that was long! Sorry if I bored you.

i was real tired when i posted that, cloaca, and i realize its totally absurd. evangelical christianity is on a huge rise. i was just reading in harpers magazine of megachurch towns out west like colarado springs, the religious right is excersizing its biggest sway on american politics. i think alot of people who believe and participate live in a descending level of doublethink towards scientific and technological progress.
since noone follows the rules strictly on the bible like the ten commandments and stuff i always wondered what they really believe in, think about it. vegans who are straight edge to the point of not even taking an aspirin excersize more of ideological self-control thru thier actions without religious overtones. buddhist swear off all vices and material possessions and its an athiestic religion. its all pretty basic concepts on right and wrong displayed thru your choices, even when it comes to something like what you eat. to be christian doesnt mean anything, they dont actually do anything, the faith and ideas dont translate to anything meaningful thru action beyond attending church and having faith. they might as well set up a hecatomb, slaughter tons of animals and get out the wine for a party like the ancient greeks did,
the only thing i see is how laws are to be written by people like bush, things like the death penalty, underminings of abortion, stem cell and genetic science<unless its genetic modified foods of course> regulating all media. its all bans and restrictions. but those are laws, just to believe a law should be one way or the other doesnt define god, and that always seemed like the high point of christian ideology in america, voting, which i guess qualifies and validates ones religious beliefs nowadys. i write this because jesus was a bum, plain and simple, lived without possessions or a home, hung out with the drunks, the scum, the murders and the hookers in the worst nieghborhoods and he was defined by how he lived, how his ideas translated into actions, how he lived to be the example of morallity. this does not fit with the way christians live at all.
and if anyone here mentions soup kitchens and clothes drives its all a tax write off scam, they make money off it, its not actually charity.

A prankster God playing practical jokes on all Creation would explain a few things I've had trouble understanding.
Most fundamentalists I've heard claim that dinosaurs still exist in central Africa. Apparently the rationale is that we humans haven't explored that continent so thoroughly as to know, which would be news to me. Unless Africans aren't considered human.

Has anyone read the Gnostic gospels? They're what really did religious alienation for me. A good start can be found here.

f_b_s-- That looks pretty interesting. Some of those titles look familiar so I'm real curious if those are what's in my antique Bible. The other one is King James version and it's old, too, but they aren't in there.

I once had a religious experience one night after I had been drinking.
I was asleep in my bed. I had a dream where I was standing in the middle of a field on a very cold windy day. One of those days where the wind blows through your hair, and through the grass. I could feel rain in my hair. Leaves were blowing, peppering my face every so often. I began to feel something in the pit of my stomach, almost like an energy was manifesting within me. The feeling got stronger as the minutes passed. It felt like something was bubbling deep within my abdomen, about to explode at any moment. A few more minutes passed and I wasn't able to contain this energy anymore. I felt it leave my body at once, almost like a volcanic eruption. The lower half of my body felt incredibly warm, as though I had just immersed myself in warm water up to my waist. I felt very nurtured by this warmth, and the relief of this supernatural energy leaving my body was a relief like I had ever felt before, as though it had been waiting years to escape me. I felt like I was one with nature, and with the universe.
When I woke up the next morning, I realized that I had forgotten to close my window. There were leaves stuck in my hair and there was diarrhea all over the bed.
