Safe Headbaning?
Hello my brothers of the low end. Yesterday I attended a local show and those Metal mothers kicked @$$. Anyways, after the last band, I sat and chilled with my friends outside, and when I sat down, it was like I was powerless to my head dropping forward. It was one of the weirdest things that happened to me. Now here I am today asking you guys some good ways to keep from pulling something again. I'm a runner, so I'm guessing that after a couple of weeks of constantly practicing and icing that headbanging won't be so bad on my neck, Some advice pleez? Thanks much guys,

Be a man, take the pain. Who really cares? Not that I'm insensitive or anything. Just take the good in with the bad. Try to be a little easier on your neck but if it snaps you won't have much to worry about being dead and all. If you get whiplash though, that would SUCK.

Well, I would headbang that severly because I get bad tension headaches and have arthritis in my neck and back anyways. That would trip me over the edge probably. I don't think it's such a bad question. I do think stregthening the neck and shoulders would help. Can you imagine getting a sprain in your neck while you were doing it fast and the pain caused just from momentum not stopping right away? I cringe at the thought.
But as I said before strengthening muscles might help.

I've got to side with this guy, I fucked my neck years ago from headbanging, at the time i got the same feeling of powerless neck muscles afterwards, but it went away. now I cant headbang at all, and ive got loads of things wrong.
someone who knows about biology told me I had all the bits of spine in my neck had shifted into the wrong place. something about C5 or something.

You are a smart cookie. Believe me I've got some hearing damage partly from having such screwed up sinuses and partly from shooting without hearing protection once. Everyone sounded like Mickey Mouse for about 24 hours. Led Zeppelin tapes sounded weird as heck. But yeah, take care of your ears and don't over-indulge your body. That C-5 business is spinal.
My eldest kid is 25 and I told him for years not to crack his knuckles. His doc just told him he has arthritis in them now. You can do damage to a lot violently headbanging. Have fun, but do take care. You may want to take your kids to Ozfest someday and you won't want to go in a wheelchair.

About the brain damage thing? I don't know, but I suppose if you did it hard enough for the brain to jar against the skull it might cause trauma of some sort.

Headbanging shouldn't be something you have to force yourself to do correctly. If the music makes you feel like banging your head some, then do it comfortably and naturally. Don't try to do anything. And if you've got to prepare for headbanging with exercises and precautions, doesn't that take the barbaric and primal effect out of it all? Headbanging isn't really something that should be discussed as an art form or something of the sort. If you've got to think about it, prepare for it, and find "safe" techniques before you stage your own headbanging, there's no point in it. Again, do what is comfortable and natural and whatever comes onto you through the music. With that, you shouldn't hurt yourself. Unless you're an idiot that can't control his actions and always ends up damaging something. And if that's so, sign up for a new season of MTV's "Jackass". The lead singer from INXS had an accident and I'm thinking it was a head injury. He lost his sense of taste and I read that was one of his reasons he killed himself. He was a very sensuous person.
I'm sorry and it's silly as heck, but I can't help but headbang when I hear 'that part' in Bohemian Rhapsody. I don't care where I am. I just have to.
I think strength precautions prior would be a good idea anyhow. Yeah, move if the music grooves you, but if you're going to work muscles in a sport or anything you need to have them in good shape and warm them up. If you're half stupid at a concert and start over doing it it may not be a good thing.

I read in an interview with Slayer's Tom Araya that he does a lot of neck stretches and shit before a show so he can headbang really good. I think that's a good thing to do, becasue if you're going to a Slayer show, you just know you'll be headbanging. No premeditation necessary there, you just know it's gonna happen. That's why I say it's good to get yourself ready for it. Better safe than sorry. I headbanged like an idiot when I saw Metallica couple of years ago, and my neck was killing me for the next couple days. I didn't like that feeling at all. Whenever I play live, I headbang non-stop for the full 1 hour set. I never have problems with my neck afterwards. The reason is that I spend atleast 10 minutes before playing stretching my neck muscles out. Think of any athlete...they always stretch their muscles (ie: legs for a runner, etc.) before competing. This is no different. Stretch your neck before AND after headbanging, and you'll be fine. Also, the muscles will develop over time, but don't stop the stretching.
