What would you play at an open mic?
Here is the situation:
May 17th, there is an open mic night at my university, and I am thinking of performing. I have never been on stage in my life. I will not do this alone, so there will be at least one other guitarist with me (I play guitar as well). There may be other band members but it is likely that will not happen.
So, what would you do? Would you play an acoustic duo piece, and what would it be? Would you play metal? Tell me what you would perform in my shoes.

I would do a solo acoustic set of stuff like "Dee" and "Malaguena", etc... I would finish the set with the song "I Gave My Love a Cherry" from the movie Animal House and I would have a friend planted in the crowd who runs up during the song, takes the guitar out of your hands, and then smashes it into little pieces and walks away as if nothing happened.

If you can get your hands on 7-strings or don't mind tuning low, I'd definitely go for Bil Ur-Sag. It's short, it's (relatively) simple, and it's fucking sweet. If not, I'd do Blessed are the Sick. If not Morbid Angel, I'd do a cover of Ram Jam's "Black Betty".

I could've sworn you said high school. my bad. still, college chicks aren't much smarter than high school chicks. they just try to act like it. anyway, that being said, I still stick to my original suggestion. play easy crowd favorites and act like it's a big fucking deal. or act like it's even less of a deal than it really is. however, since you are in college, you can probably squeeze some actual metal in there.
you gotta realize that there aren't gonna be any A&R people there, so you don't have to prove your worth. just do what it takes to look cool and maybe get some ass in the process. |

oepth- the drapery falls has two guitar parts and is easy. plus, it changes a lot. i think its a great choice, ive played it with a friend for some people and it went over well.

Women and black metal? I personally use females mouths for other things, but if you think they sound tough go for it.
I think females sound like complete shit in black metal with the exception of the National Socialist black metal band Dub Buk. Being a black metal musician for 7 years taught me that you don't play shows if you are true to the scene, you don't really reheare either. You cut yourself, and you immolate things. I don't know about you, but I recently played an open mic at a local coffee shop, and it's pretty cool just to come up with a few riffs and improvise around them. I play bass, so maybe it's a bit different, but I really enjoyed just playing alone. You have more freedom, and if you screw up, no one can tell.
I know your oppurtunity passed, but if another comes up, I'd definetely reccomend it.
