Internet2' gets music industry's attention
Groups to sue students downloading songs

The super-fast "Internet2" network that connects universities researching the next-generation Internet is also apparently popular among college students who download pirated music and movies.

Entertainment groups said Tuesday they intend to sue hundreds of students accused of illegally distributing copyrighted songs and films across college campuses using the private research network, which boasts speeds hundreds of times faster than the Internet.

How much faster? Internet2 researchers once demonstrated they can download a DVD-quality copy of the popular movie "The Matrix" in 30 seconds over their network, a feat they said would take roughly 25 hours over the Internet.

The Recording Industry Association of America, the trade group for the largest labels, said it will file federal lawsuits Wednesday against 405 students at 18 colleges with access to the Internet2 network. The Motion Picture Association of America said it will file an unspecified number of lawsuits against Internet2 users.

Internet2 is used by several million university students, researchers and professionals around the world but is generally inaccessible to the public.

"We don't condone or support illegal file-sharing," said Internet2's chief executive, Doug Van Houweling. "We've always understood that just like there is a lot of file-sharing on the public Internet, there's also some file-sharing on Internet2."

The recording industry said some students were illegally sharing across Internet2 as many as 13,600 music files and that the average number of songs offered illegally by the students was 2,300 each.

just wondering if anyone else heard of it

Maybe it's just a LAn based network. They have those everywhere and can reach 10MPs. The entire univeristy internet network is connected together, so that's why it's so fast for college students.

I assume its just a customised LAN with some tweaking of the TCP/IP protocol, and fibre optical cable connecting everything to achieve the high speeds.
Regular internet is restricted by the companies that provide it by charging extortionate prices for very high speeds, and their reluctance to upgrade their equipment until it dies- thus saving money, because at the end of the day, money is what keeps these companies going.

The record labels are going to shoot themselves in the foot once again, just like they did when Napster first came out. Napster was used by only a handful of college students sharing an insignifficant number of files, and was by no means perfect. It would've probably eventually died out, had the record labels not made this huge fucking armageddon thing out of it. The news about Napster's existence hit the Internet, TV, papers, radio, every fucking media available and a couple unavailable ones. What hapenned next? Oh, I don't know, take a lucky guess. Shit really hit the fan. Somehow, they managed to kill off Napster, but not before hundreds of other spinoff programs popped up that allowed users to share not only mp3s but movies and software, too. The file sharing craze on the Internet we have now is out of control. Thanks very largely to the morons at the record labels who were simply a bunch of fat greedy bastards. Maddox has a very good argument on his site about record labels charging upwards of $15 for a CD, yet only $10 for a tape. Looking at it logically, a tape is more expensive and time consuming to produce than a CD. Greed.
That is the same motivation behind thsi case. They are going to sue a bunch of dirt poor college students sharing files over Internet2. If the record companies didn't get involved, the schools eventually would have, and they would've eventually put a stop to this shit. I didn't even know that Internet2 existed. I'm pretty sure the same goes for millions of other people. When this story hits the news, everyone's gonna get on the Internet2 bandwagon. I'm surprised no one's yet sued those scientists who downloaded that Matrix DVD for the speed test. Fucking ridiculous. This kind of shit really makes me sick. People don't buy CDs becasue music today generally sucks ass. And they don't go to the theater because they have to pay up to $10 for a fucking ticket, trade a healthy kidney for a medium Coke, and then when they finally settle in to watch the damn movie, they have to sit through 30 minutes of fucking bullshit advertisements. Greed everywhere. Fucking disguisting.
