This has been a very interesting trial, and not just because of all the goonish Keystone Kops jurisprudence going on. It's a real East-meets-West scenario with all the hallmarks of a major international pissing contest about to begin.

But never fear, our government has had stern words to their government, with the result that the girl in question will most likely get life in an Indonesian gaol instead of the death penalty. Cheers fellow, great big fucking difference there - I think I'd rather have a bullet.

Several things about this case have pissed me off more that usual:

* The prosecutors keep referring to marijuana as a narcotic. YOU IGNORANT BATFUCKING MARMOTS. Narcotics are opioids. You shouldn't be allowed to prosecute things you don't understand.

* Who smuggles drugs INTO Bali? That's like smuggling whisky into my house. Do they honestly believe anyone is dumb enough to take drugs from Australia, where they're worth a fortune, to Bali where they're worth dick? This must be some kind of fuck up.

* Who thinks they can put more than 4 kilos of skunk in a single poly-bag and not have it detected by airport security? The whole luggage compartment would smell like Bob Marley's attic. The only worse way to smuggle drugs would be to put them in a bag labelled "ILLEGAL DRUGS".

* I can't corroborate this, but it seems the police not only failed to fingerprint the drugs, but they didn't have the grass analysed. How do these guys keep their jobs?

* Indonesians don't just have court TV, they have a courtroom with less rules than tag team wrestling, and she's spent the entire trial with cameras thrust into every orifice of her body and toadfuckign scum journalists crawling over her like lice. I didn't believe I was capable of taking offence at something any more, but I found it offensive.

* This ain't no jury trial. If the judges find this girl guilty, she's fucked.

It's at times like this you realise just how much fun cultural relativism can be. Isn't Third World justice interesting? The burden of proof is the other way around - prove your innocence, or get soundly justice-raped. After all the unbelivable amounts of goodwill that went out after the Bali bombing and the Tsunami, it seems like they're hell-bent on royally fucking their tourist industry all to hell.

This is all rambly - I'm tired and glycogen depleted and half drunk and feeling too vicious to type properly. If you don't understand, you can fuck off.

I have actually followed this trial throught the wonders of the brainwashing box.....though i'm suprised this hasn't had a much more intense media spotlight over hear than the case of the Nigerian woman setnence to be stoned to death a few years back(granted the Italian protest to it), still.....this is an example of human purest, egotistical "we're higher up so we're right, you're so FUCK(ed)ING wrong".....and I'm suprised no one has intervened to an extreme extent...
Though, the whole drug side of this and the prosecutions arguement does illustrate the lack of intelligence these kind of countries abore(sp?context?), and also the willfull following of supposed higher intelligent office personnel.

Think about it from a legslative point of view.
This would be a verry rough case for the judges. Their decision is probably going to set some kind of precedent. Though truth be know, my knowledge of the Indonesian legal system is non-exsistant, in most democratic contries (noteably Australia, the UK, Canada and the USA) the courts work to interpret legislation, and fill in gaps. So in this case, If the young lass gets the death penalty, then every subsequent case with quite similar facts will result in the same outcome. This is intentionally used to deter people from the thought of bringing narcotics into Bali, the same way any kind of sentace is used for crime.

when you travel to Indonesia, all Airlines 'remind' the passengers that smuggling drugs into their country is a capital offence, so to be honest, she knew the score, she knew what she was doing and to be honest, HER SILLY FUCKING FAULT!!!!

a lastly, while I think Indonesia's laws are stupid (being shot for a bit of weed????) it is their country, their laws and we as tourists should respect that.

that's true to a degree, but in most countries you'll get a slap on the wrist or a fine, and sent to rehab. the death penalty (or life) is far too much of a jump for tourists. maybe a small jail sentence would be the worst, especially for first-time offenders like young schapelle.

yes, it would be a tough case, no question about it. judges and justices absolutely don't like setting precedents, because the pressure is on them to re-write this law, and while there is the fact that they're able to over-ride the national parliament (this is the only time they're able to do so,) they still cop a lot of flak from the community in general who don't agree with this new precedent.

as for the subsequent cases, this is (for 100% guarantee) only the case if it is being heard in indonesia's highest court. i'm quite sure this isn't the way it seems, because the supreme court only hears cases to do with murder, treason and appeals from the county court, and the high court only deals with political matters and appeals from the supreme court. what i'm getting at, is that the precedent in question only stands for courts in the hierarchy of equal or lower importance.

This is puzzling at best...I dont sense a frame up but do believe others were/are using unwitting people as mules.
Did she depart from Australia? Wouldnt there possibly be video of her happenings inside the airport to show someone did this or perhaps a time where her bag was officially away from her being loaded or something...anything to prove it "could" have been planted there?
I cant argue with laws of other nations.....if Bali wants to execute/life imprison anyone for crimes that in manys opinions are not a major deal.....then I would NEVER visit such a society even for a holiday.....makes no sense.....but that was her desire so I wont argue with that either.
