Guitar Center
Hey, does anyone know how good guitar center is? I'm going to Atlanta on "official" ( ) military business....and I have never been to one....I'm thinking about getting a triple rec if they have them though.

They're cool. They have lots of shit and will make deals if you are serious. The only annoying thing is the employees usually don't know much and if the place is busy good luck getting any help...

The thing you have to watch for is USED EQUIPMENT. Don't let them sell you crappy stuff, you have to make sure you get newly bought equipment. My friend said that his guitar teacher used to work there, and he would see TONS of returned stuff that would simply be re-packaged and sold again.
Besides that, the place is HUGE. You'll be amazed when you enter through the sacred doors of Guitar Center.

I usually just go into my Guitar Center to play with all the expensive shit and piss the workers off. Sucks that my Guitar Center doesn't have that much stuff, but I'm glad that I live by one, not to mention there's like 2 other G-centers within an hours worth of driving. One thing I really fucking hate about my G-center is that they only have like a couple of really nice guitars, so they're really apprehensive about letting you play it. I also hate when you're playing through an amp, and they tell you to turn it down.

I like going there.. just to play all the expensive equipment, look like I'm interested in buying it, then leave.
Oh, and they NEED to have peavey amps..
EDIT: And Randall amps.
But , my local music go round can hook me up with all of that.

i only get high end new drum stuff at guitar center like my piccolo and axis pedal, i used to hate guitar center but i found out an interesting thing about them, they hire out used equipment stores for the repairs of gear in some locations and actually help keep some smaller buisnesses going<they usually drive used gear places out of buisness>, a friend of mine owns a used gear shop and this happened to him, unlimited workload, good money. and my bandmate is good friends with a manager so i get discounts at the nearby guitar center, there still is an overwhelming wal-martness to it, but i do like the store policy that encourages people to play the gear

Guitar Center is kind of overpriced (especially for guitars that they let everyone play). I was shopping around for a Taylor 614ce and they had 2 in the store, but they're hanging there in the acoustic room where there is no supervision over them, and anyone can just pick it up and play it. There was noticable cosmetic damage on the guitar and like a loose piece of wood inside of it. I'm a fan of Sam Ash as opposed to Guitar Center, I think the staff is more knowledgable, and they really take care of their products. Hope that helps

I have fond memories of Wally and I going to the one in Willoughby "just to look." And that usually ended up costing something on my plastic, but I didn't mind. The store we'd go to also had vintage guitars in sealed thermostatically controlled cases which were pretty cool.
I also have a memory of one of the times we went to GC and Sam Ash with a couple of friends and had our one and only mom/son experience of going to a headshop together. He reminded me of that. lol
Those were the days!

And when you buy picks or strings and you've shortchanged them slightly, the clerks are usually like, "it's cool dude, I'll cover you."

My experience at Guitar Center is nothing short of awesome. I bought three electric guitars there so far, a shitload of pics and strings, a distortion pedal, cables, you name it. Every time I go there I get something. It's really a cool place. I only talk to one guy, though, the one who sold me my first guitar. He's pretty cool, and he's very knowledgeable, (did I spell that right?). Some of the people who work there are total dicks, but this guy is really cool, and he likes the same kind of music I do, so he always gives me really good advice. He's always giving me deals and hook ups on shit.
Guitar Center and Musician's Friend are the same company, so if you don't live near a GC, you can just go to the site and get some really good deals.
Been to Sam Ash, too, that's where I bought my amp. I like GC better, it just seems like a much more pleasant place to me. They'll let you play any damn guitar you like, whether it costs $300 or $3000. Definitelly recommend it to everyone. Plus, from my experience, they're cheaper than the small shops.

the problem is.. they let anybody play any guitar.. all theyre guitars are always dirty, some have warped necks. usually the strings are pretty worn. and stuff.

I just went to a Guitar Center for the first time today. Up until this thread was created, I didn't even know they existed, but now I've been to one. After school my friend just said, "Hey, you want to go to Guitar Center?" Usually we just play baseball after school, but hey, playing guitars and equipment I'll never be able to afford sounds pretty damn kickass. It was great. I played about half the time on an acoustic, mostly because I love acoustics and don't have the chance to play one at home. I played some acoustic stuff like Desolate Ways and the intro to Hell's on it's Knees, but then I started to play Holy Wars. I forgot it's a little harder to tremolo pick on an acoustic. It still sounded good. I kick ass at everything.

I've been there twice now. Some of the staff are okay. Others fucking suck. I'm pretty sure their floor reps get paid on commisio so they're always trying to hawk you stuff and eyeballing you whne you handle their gear. if you can ignore them, it's fine. other staff folks are good. The maintenence/parts guy gave me a free tremolo arm for my old B.C. Rich ST so, i guess they're okay.
