Slam Dancing is the original speed/thrash term where I grew up. Moshing came into use later as I recall. Skanking is a punk term and sort of implies more violent contact.  |

I straight-armed the floor in a Rigor Mortis pit. They finally figured out after two days of excruciating pain that a tiny triangular bone near the base of my thumb had broken in half. I had to have a FULL arm cast because twisting my forearm disturbed the bone in question. This was my left arm and it forced me to play slide guitar in my lap for the next few months. |

Figure I'd share a pit story right quick. This happened last night.
Me fav local group, INVU, was playin' in a rather small place. The stage was only a rise by about 1 to 1-1/2 feet. 4 Hardcore/Metalcore bands. Moshing was awesome, very rough and shit, for the first 3 bands. I even did a mini-stage dive in to the pit (since the stage was REALLY small, I say mini). Then, INVU came on. They were headlining, and the place went fuckin' crazy!! THE PIT ENVELOPED THE ENTIRE FLOOR, people were gettin' pushed on stage, and INVU only got halfway through there first song when they stopped playing. Why? WE HAD ACCIDENTALLY TRAMPLED ALL THE MONITORS IN AND DESTROYED ALL THE CABLES, SO THE VOCALS WERE OUT! They continued playing afterward, with no vocals however, just the 2 singers running around onstage screamin' over top of everything. There was still DANCING, just no more moshing. Eventually, though, everyone dancing (I was among them) got a bit too violent, and EVERYONE was thrown out. That was a VERY intense show for me. Anything similar ever happen to anyone else?

I was at a show in Gainsville once and about 3 songs into the opening act.....about 14 skins showed up and dominated the pit until there was blood and several fights inundating the area......the skins were picking out people and going in for the attack.....it was shitty to witness and they took the whole vibe down a few notches......I was hoping some guys would ban together and go for some payback.....but it never happened.....and me...well....I cant fight guys so it sucked ass badly.
That was about 4 yrs ago.

Moshing in the UK is so fucking pussy - its just bumping into each other.
Worst moshing injury i have had is probably a couple of black eyes and being kicked in the head a few times. A friend broke a few ribs.
