some get into metal at that age, sickened and tired of whatever they listened to before.
some get into it at young ages (like me and others here) and never let it go.
some are just curios and enjoy discovering new types and styles of music.

I've found many people are beginning to cease listening to metal. Whether it be that it depresses them, the lack of someone to share thier taste in music with, or the growing popularity of rap (the curruptor of modern society IMO). But when I go to see a metal concert, most people are actually above twenty. It's rare I see someone my age (18), or anyone in highschool still. So the older ones are out there, they just don't post and don't hang out with our age group? That's just a guess, it's probably wrong too. Maybe it has everything to do with demographics. I know not, but these tidbits of my thoughts bear with them some possibilities.

Music hasn't the power to corrupt society, particularly a society as morally bankrupt and irresponsible as the one that existed here long before rap became popular. There's nothing wrong with rap that isn't wrong with most other forms of popular music, anyway.

I agree ten ton alien most of us went though the same evolutional stages
got tired of popular music and was looking for alternatives, ie metal music. but from empirical observation, it would seem that past 25 to say 30 people seem to lose interest in metal in the early 90s i was part of a group of metalheads who used to hang out togeather and most of them who i meet to day no longer are interested in metal at all. 2 of us out of 14 are still in to metal. and it makes me wounder say in 5 or 10 years time how many of us who us this forum, err this good forum ,will still have kept the faith.

There are a lot more older metal fans than younger ones actually. They've just outgrown the irrational need to dress "metal" and they don't go out to concerts as often anymore. If you are basing your assessment on record sales it boils down to the simple fact that there is a serious lack of new metal albums worth buying in the eyes of most people who grew up on eighties metal. Death metal vocalists are unfortunately extremely unpopular with most people and death metal is where most of the great music writers are currently concentrated. I have several friends who love death metal music but won't listen to it because of the vocals. You may have noticed that the vast majority of great metal musicians are in their thirties and I assure you that they are not intentionally pandering to teenagers.
A perfect example of my assessment is the timelessness of eighties speed metal. Back then it was the largely unpopular stepchild of mainstream metal, but time has proven that they were the visionaries whose music will live on while mainstream eighties metal is now seen to be the joke that it always was. Most all of the older thrash bands are still making decent albums and selling out clubs while guys like Dee Snider of Twisted Sister are relegated to hosting bad documentary TV shows or worse because no one gives two shits about them.
Twenty years from now most of the people who are currently teenage nu-metal fans will be burnt out parents who no longer follow new music trends and get excited when they hear some crappy song from their youth on a flashback radio show. "Big Hair Wednesdays" on Rock 105.3 in San Diego which hearkens back to crap like Cinderella, White Lion, Poison, and Guns 'N' Roses is a perfect example of this highly predictable phenomenon. What you don't realize as a youth is that there is a secret society of adults in the workplace who mock all of this and don't waste their time calling radio stations to request music because they have their own personally bought collections and are too busy working and partying to get publically involved in metal. You are not aware of this silent majority because they don't like to hang around teenagers.

You are correct from that point of view. Fanatics are mostly tourists though and aren't really into it. It's just a social phenomenom like bell-bottoms and religion (Bell-bottoms being the less harmless of the two).

Just like to augment on what you said.Id would call this type of pseudo fan a hitch-hiker on the musical highway of the world thumbing a ride on any bandwagon that happens to be rolling by.more analogous of the nu-metal gang but unfortunately not exclusively so.anyway reading all your posts it would seem many of you are by your own experiences at odds with me iam surprised by this, and kylito your first post did not go unoticed you made some astute points.so in sume no amount of socratic method is going to reconcile us on this subject we are missing a synthesis, glade to see that some of you had/have some interest in this thread.so ill let others open there mouths an let there bellies rumble

Older Metalheads eventually ascend to another spiritual plane of existence in the hierarchy of the metal world after many years of intense listening and playing. Much like how martial arts master becomes an untouchable being that can fly, shot fire or lightening from their eyes or fingers, and make words come out of there mouths while their lips are speaking another language. Once a metalhead reaches this new demi-god level they become weird and depart from the safety of metalhead society and watch it from a distance. No one really knows where or why they go but one thing is for sure. They are metalheads in the purest form and can crush a nOOb metalhead with just a simple thought from their focused and well trained metal minds.
A great example of this happening lately would be the departure of Nilly. He has ascended

Whenever I goto metal shows, I am usually the only kid there (fifteen right now, sixteen on Sunday). The last show I went to had some younger people there (20's?), and it was with Crowbar and others. The Agent Steel show had pretty much all guys in their 30's or 40's with their leather/denium jackets with the patches. Cool though to headbang with them though, and I usually get props from them by wearing my Nuke shirt.

That is the greatest piece of wisdom I've read in a long time. So true...
I think we forgot to put a technical name on the tourist metalheads. They've been called "posers" since before the dawn of time...
EDIT: Before someone tries to get technical and tell me "Poser" is not that old of a term, I had better point out that I use my own internal calender to mark time. I'm not a big fan of "The Christ" so instead of B.C. and A.D. I mark time as B.S.M. and A.S.M. (Before/After Speed Metal). Year 0 A.S.M. starts on June 13th, 1983 (The release of "Kill 'em All"). You younger folks can't fully appreciate how boring the world was before then...

you're gonna grow up to do great things.
when I was your age, I didn't even have exposure to metal. I had first been introduced to metal in the late '90s. One day, on the school bus ride home from school, this dude who was the only metalhead on the bus, (the only obvious metalhead), got up and changed the station from the "station that plays all of today's hits" which was playing some stupid Backside Boys "song" to the "Real Rock Station". They were playing Rob Zombie's "Living Dead Girl". I love that damn song, man. It's plain awesome.
When I got home I tried to find that station, unsuccessfuly, of course, because the song was over, and I didn't know the call letters or the frequency of the station. A year or two had passed until I got ahold of some Guns 'N Roses CDs, which I at the time considered to be the ultimate metal band in the world. That is, until a little while later, the guy who is now the lead guitarist in my band introduced me to Metallica and Megadeth. The rest is history.

Isn't it a part of registering here that if you're under the age of 13 you must ask your parents permission? Or am I thinking of everywhere else

why are most metal fans in there teens or early 20s
i guess most metal fans are in their teens or early 20s because they see metal as rebeling against their parents or authority figures then as they age they sort of mellow out so then they just convert to some sort of mellow music

Dam I wish I was in my teens or early 20s,
When i first got into rock I was a teenager, My day the heavy metal bands were Cream < humble pie , Deep purple , and shit like that , you be a bit surprised how many oldies like me go to concerts , I probably go to alot more shows than most of you guys , not because im great , but because I can afford to go to 75 shows a year , the price of tickets is ridiculous. Most metal shows are like 25 bucks , where the tee shirt and brews you looking at about a 100 dollar night.

How are you cute? You're like, 400
Yes yes, I know I give my mother a lot of shit...but it's how our family works, honestly...
I'd say most metal fans are in the ages they are for a lot of reasons. One, we grow up on this stuff a lot of us. Two, a lot of younger people want things to take aggression out with, and it's helpful for that. The last big thing that I can think of, is that I know a lot of older people still listen to all of the stuff they always did, not everyone is always openminded, and most metal wasn't around like 30 to 50 years ago.
Maybe I'm way off, but if I am, fuck you.

As you get older your tastes do change,The same as if your a musician the more you progress as a musician the more things you used to think were cool now starts to sound like shit.
Take for example I thought Deep Purple was the hardest shit besides Black sabbath to play, Im older so we are talking 1970 71,72 etc, Now I hear Purple I go shit that songs easy .
The point is your tastes will change somewhat as you get older. But its just the way things work.

i cant wait till when my generation is alot older and there will be a general overlap of really intense music that will be really dated. old people will be listening to slayer, napalm death etc. will the future generations get it? will they understand that we lived in the a very unusual era of music? how many times will metal re-hash itself till its unrecognizable. i think most music in the future will be electronic anyways

when you go to a slayer show the average person there is not a teen , theyre in their 30s and 40s Slayer has been kicking ass since what 1983 thats 22 yrs ago. So if you were lets say 25 in 1983 you be a old fuck like me now wearing your slayer concert Tee shirt at the slayer show .
All of those bands of that era Metallica , anthrax are older crowds.

Yeah, I've thought about that before...what's gonna happen if I'm like 65 and listening to Cannibal Corpse and I hear "Quit listening to your god damn oldies, grandpa!!!"
It's really kind of a mindfuck...

Some people are in it for the duration while others it's a growing teen phase, most of the people I grew up with who played guitar still play, some are still in bands others just jam and play for fun in between raising kids/work etc. Others have left it behind but most of them were those who were heavy in to the spandex, eyeliner stuff(no I don't mean Metallica's Load period! )
I've always had a diverse taste in music but now I'm older I have a little more disposable income with which I can use to buy and explore newer bands or other genres. But like I said loud dirty fuck off guitars give me wood and that is never going to change!

maybe it's the fact that metal breeds aggression, no matter what subgenre it is classified under. I think that with age, certainly i've noticed, comes responsibilities and you can't have an aggressive mindset or retreat when it comes to dealing with life and it's situations.
Either "older metalheads" have gone super mellow, or they think all the new material from bands out there is pathetic, or there really isnt a large population of metalheads in their older ages above 30.
You decide

I think you can listen to aggresive tunes without having to use it as a safety valve due to life pressure. Granted as you get older, life experience and maturity help you find coping strategies and priorities change. Some people do move away from it, others like myself and a lot of my peers still revel in it!
I never listened to metal because I wanted to rebel, my whole family like rock/metal and I was drawn to it from an early age.
I never listened to it because I wanted to vent lifes frustrations.
I enjoy the camaradrie you get with other metal fans which you don't tend to get in all walks of life.
I listen to it because I enjoy it, I like guitars.
I don't think todays bands are pathetic, just like days of yesteryear, there are good bands and not so good bands, your own personal taste defines the parameters on that. I think there're some great new bands and I enjoy listening to them as much as the older stuff I grew up with.

Except for that 6th toe on your left foot
Origionally, ill admit, that i think i did get into metal because i wanted to be 'different'. I used to dress all in black wearing spiked bracelets and shit too (oh god...) I was into slipknot, cradle of filth, coal chamber, all that kinda shit. And also the most hardcore metal we could find, behemoth, mortician, pig destroyer. Because the looks you get driving around with that cranked up is awesome. We still do it for laughs when driving thru town actually.
Then i started hanging around my mate Michael more and he got me into guitar. After that i stopped listening to metal coz i thought it was br00tal, but more because of the work put into it musically (is musically a word?)
And now the only metal i listen to is opeth, and occasionally necrophagist and shit.
I'm much more into the 'soft' stuff. But i've changed so much as a person over the last 1-2 years.
I think its already been said why us youngins are into the metal. Some do it to stand out or 'rebel', some just love it.
Then you get to an age where you dont really give a shit what others think, and just like what you like.
