A math problem
Yes, fuckwits, a MATH problem. If you don't like it, don't fucking post here. I already know a big nerd.
Now! one of my students brought me this the other day. Apparently other teachers had severe problems with it. I'm not entirely sure why. Consider yourself a test audience. (Oh, and no-one who's taken anything quantitative at college allowed. That means you, Mansley.)
"Two pipes can fill a tank in 80 minutes when used together. When used separately, one can fill the tank in 2 hours less than the other. How long does it take each pipe (separately) to fill the tank?"

Not in a school. I teach privately, which means I can swear, abuse my students, goof off and generally get paid more.
Now answer the question.

I had a math problem like this earlier in the school year. It was on a test, and it was multiple choice. I guessed right, and we havent had anything else like it since. The teacher explained it, and I completely forgot it.

...and it wasn't right.
Sorry.
To those of you who got it right - can you get a proof that doesn't involve an asusmption? Don't message that to me. It's harder than just coming across the answer, which is pretty average really.

Seing that many of you got it wrong. I hope im not destroying this for FBS.

That's an excellent hint.
I am surprised how many of you tried this. I've had 9 PMs in the last few hours.

On the topic of math (though unrelated to this one, and I didn't want to make a new thread)
Last friday I was taught about long known as Newton's Law of Cooling. This equation enables us to determine when a person died based on body temperature and such (without exposure to variables such as water, i.g. thrown in a lake) I thought someone might like to know about DEATH MATH

how does that work though? say a person died two weeks ago and other died 3 weeks ago. wouldnt there temperaturs be the same? since everything has stopped functioning wouldnt after a certain amount of time the temperature just even off and stay the same

I remember seeing a pathology report thingy on PBS Nova.....these guys would jam a giant needle/thermometer into a recently deceased persons liver (liver being the best for this due to size/location) and they could get a pretty precise determination to the time of death as recent as 72 hours depending on variables of course.
But times longer than that I have no clue.
It was of course a simple body temp/time equasion

You take the temperature of the body, then an hour later you take the temperature again and find the drop, the decreasing temperature is inversely proportional to the increasing time. and you base it around 37 degrees (a living person). I guess its analogous to carbon dating. The equation is...
(T-A)/(Tsub0-A)-kt where...
T= The temperature of the body at any time after death
Tsub0= The temperature of the body at the time of death
A= The temperature of the surrounding medium, or Ambient temperature
k= Constant corresponding to human body cooling rate
t= lentch of time the body has been cooling

Ha ha ha ha, and I am fairly sure the metric system is far superior to use in calculations than the imperial system.
I think the key thing about the mensioned law of cooling would be that it has to be used on something that is recently deceased, because as you say - they would eventually reach a point in which the temprature would equal the surrounding temprature, and remain there. Also what if said cadaver was killed in a fire, then their temprature may exceed 37, so the formula would no longer work acurately there either, because although the temprature at the time of death was 37, it would most likely increase then would have to decrease back to the point at which the cadaver was 37 deg.
Although I am fairly sure a 16 year old wouldn't realy be looking into it in that level of detail, or for that practical purpose.

There are much better and more reliable ways of determining time of death than application of Newton's Law of Cooling. There are all sorts of biological tests that give just as quick and far more accurate diagnoses.

Yeah, they look for eggs and pupae that are laid by insects - depending on what stage the eggs/pupae are in their development, a time of death can be gauged.
