2Pac: Good?

I never got into rap and all that, but somewhere in the middle of talking about foreign bands, the topic somehow changed to 2Pac. My friends, who are probably into more black/death like myself, one surprised me by saying they respect 2Pac. When I asked him, he said because he actually wrote about interesting, and conflicting issues and not just about pointless topics like 'bitches', 'ho's and all that riff raff.

He went to the length of calling him a 'lyrical genius', but I'm still not quite sure.

So now I am here to ask other fellow people of this forum on what you think of the guy. Was he as great as people say he was? I don't know very much on him, and I'm not too sure if I should take a look into it, at my current standpoint, I'm shaking my head.

What are your thoughts on 2Pac?

Is there anything more predictable or annoying than a metalhead's reaction to that horrible three letter word?

Rap is fine. A lot of it sucks. Some of it is very good. Intelligent lyrics slways appeal to me, even when it's not my favorite genre. Tupac never did much for me, though. You people are very, very boring.

One of my buds actually went to the length to call him a lyrical genius, but I didn't really find him convincing.

So now I am here to ask other fellow people of this forum on what you think of the guy. Was he as great as people say he was? I don't know very much on him, and I'm not too sure if I should take a look into it, at my current standpoint, I'm shaking my head.

2Pac is extremely overrated. He wrote some good social commentary earlier on in his career, but he ended up turning into the stereotypical gangsta rapper by the time he joined Death Row Records.

If you are interested in rappers with much better social commentary who never turned themselves into self parodies, I'd suggest you check out Ice Cube (especially the first 3 records) and anything by KRS-1 and his old group, Boogie Down Productions. I'd recommend Onyx as well, but not as strongly. I listen to this stuff occasionally. I also listen to other hip-hop occasionally (like NWA, old Snoop Dogg, old Dr. Dre), but not for the good lyrics, because they are usually just goofy gangsta/drug/sex/violence lyrics. As much I enjoy some of this stuff, I really can't listen to it for more than a couple of hours. You just can't beat metal, man.

Also, for the record, I know there exists an entire genre of underground hip-hop rap that is supposed to be far better than the mainstream stuff. I remember when I was in high school, I was hardcore into the underground thrash and shit, and I had this friend who was just as hardcore into underground rap. He was always telling me I should check it out, but I never really did because I didn't have the money to expend (all my money went to metal tapes and school supplies). He swore by this stuff, and he hated the mainstream stuff except Ice Cube. So, for what it's worth, there is apparently a parellel with the hip-hop world, and from the way he explained it to me, guys like 2Pac were to him like Korn are to us. Unfortunately, I have no idea who his Monstrosity or Malevolent Creation are, or else I'd tell you.

Woo 2pac, He was loved because of his Presence on the Mic and his flow. He didnt have the best lyrics and wasnt a genius but he was a thug and nobody could light up a crowd like he did. If you want lyrical genius, Jayz is ya man. He freestyled 6 albums every song one take and touches on a lot of important facts and interesting things and still has time to say how good he is.

I respect any talented musician no matter what genre they play. Think about the metal people see - rapper dudes nickname metalheads Slips after Slipknot. The mainstream shit is just the tip of the iceberg, and metalheads are on a different iceberg from rappers. They're also on a different icebreg from techno listeners, and on a different iceberg from punks, and what we see from our smug and safe iceberg of metal isn't enough to pass a good judgement.

they mite sound like that because the main rapper in the group is actually of hispanic background. He was a gun shooting member of the latin kings gang in the neighbourhoods he grew up in, the rest of the band is american.

Note the section this thread was created under. Chit chat. It does not have to be about metal. This thread is perfectly legitimate, stop with your unnecessary comments.

We've had about 4-5 serious posts in here.

i like rap.
having said that i like classical, rock, pop, and all sorts of other stuff even one or two abba songs.
i dont care for lyrics in the slightest, i might be retarded but i just dont care.
i think of the voice as another instrement.
right now your probably thinking, how can he like rap then?
when i listen to rap i listen to the rythums, the tones, the rymes, blah blah.
so will smith for example puts me in tears of boredom.
but Dr Dre i like. eminineniem i can listen to. i cant name much more.
i also love the "oldschool stuff" like gangstas paradise. or regulaters, or i got five on it.
in fact the only music i dont like is techno. since i stopped taking those awful drugs i cannot stand the repetative on and on and on shit. prodigy are good, they keep it interesting. as does Dr Dre. 2pac i cant comment on. i dont know any of his songs.
i did meet some girl who genuinly believed he faked his own death and is living in an italien monastery.
actually that might have been notorious big.
fuck im rambling.

ah, rap with nu-metal guitars?

not really. the guitarist was Rey from Downset.... which is one of the reasons I like some rap. Downset owns.

also, Cypress Hill is one of the few rap groups I can appreciate every now and then. others may be DMX and other shit, I'm not really into the whole snoop dogg thing and all. But hey, I listen to allmost everything, I only have a few rap cds though.

Nice.

I like their use of guitars with rap and still having an original sound. goes for the guitar riffs too.

"People have such a fucked idea of metal! The silly, teenage posturing you see on MTV and Channel V isn't metal, it's weak commercial dross. And technically, it's appalling! Bands like Limp Bizkit or Drowning Pool couldn't write a decent riff to save their lives. They can't play their instruments! The only reason they're famous is because some wanker in music marketing figured out how to sell them. Pop music isn't and will never be metal. Metal is real, intense, skillful music."

How many times have you read that? How many times have you written that? God, it's true. Do you think it isn't true for other types of music?

RAP TEH SIUCKZ!!!1111 I SAW JAY-Z AND HES GAI!!!!11@ You fucking goons, I sit in judgement on you and declare you a pack of ignorant cunts. Collectively, I'm ashamed that you people draw breath and no-one has stopped you in the street and sterilised you with a spoon yet.

See why I love Jim? It's not just that he was the only other person using 'cunt' back when it was cool and not played out. It's because he realizes the best vantage point from which to get perspective on the world isn't with his head shoved up his true as fuck metal ass.

He just does that for fun.

I do not like rap at all. I can stand about 30 seconds before I tune it out.

did you join for this thread? I can stand some rap, but i dont like it, and as said by FBS, i know the underground stuff takes talent and thats why its underground, thats why technical/proficient music wont ever get popular, because its not easy to digest like the pill that is pop, that you get shoved down your throat every day. Technical music has never been popular, never will be, and thats the way it should stay, away from the ignorant fucks that plague this earth.

Well said Mr. Innards.

Rap = yawn. Some are good with the lyrics and all, but it bores the fuck out of me.

What about Tone Loc?

woo tone loc is cool. So what if he doesnt razzle dazzle with crazy multi's and mad metaphores in his lyrics, he is just funny and cool. But it is such a shame a bunch of metal heads talking about rap and 2pac and really knowin nothing about the genre and person in question.

Well, that was partly why I asked the question itself, and had intentionally done so on this site to gain a metalhead's educated perspective. Some replied in the manor I had hoped, and others.......well...predictable.

I pretty much have a good idea on the man now, or at least enough, so whomever mods here can close/delete this thread if they wish. Thanks for the replies. Especially Sodomaniac's.

Every metalhead should be openminded. How the hell did you find this shit in the first place? By refusing to listen outside your (then)current box?

I have listened to some rap off n' on over the years. I've come across some I liked and most that I didn't. My first real exposure to rap was on the bus in high school around... 1988. It was 2 Live Crew and some kid was cranking up some shit on the bus about "There I was looking into her panties and there was some shit, wasn't pus, wasn't blood, I don't know what the fuck it was!" Basically made me wanna puke LOL.

But I've come across some rap that I have really liked. For me though (and this ain't racist but just because maybe I am like a tampon, white, uptight and out of sight) my favorites have been the beastie boys and currently in mainstream Eminem. I don't care what you all say I think the kid is quite talented.

Interestingly enough Tupac spent his summers at his Mom's place in Marin City, which was just down the road from where I lived. Basically the ghetto area of a really rich, upper-class WASP community just north of San Francisco. Can't really call it a ghetto though, it wasn't bad. Had a bunch of friends there and partied my ass off in Marin City. LOL.

I don't like rap, sure It may have some good poetry in (once you take away the ghetto slang), I don't like the beats, I dunno, it sounds too electronic to me.l

This is Chit Chat, MTM. Y'know, 'THE ONLY forum where you can talk about anything and everything'? But, even ignoring that, non-metal bands get mentioned all the time - in Bands, which is a part of the Metal subforum, no less - without the same 'Oh my god, this is a METAL site! Why are you talking about bands that don't play metal?' uproar. Don't be a dumbass. Or at least be a consistent dumbass. There shouldn't be a lot of rap threads, but a thread once in a while trying to figure out where metalheads stand on a non-metal genre should be all right to anyone able to halt the knee jerk reaction and think about it.

I wouldnt currently consider myself openminded towards music. I know I was a lot before I got into metal, I would listen to anything. Once I really got into metal, everything else just seemed boring. I know I cant stand the emo-punk-popcore music my sister listens to, though I could back when I wasn't a metalhead.

I have some friends who are into Necro quite a bit, apparently he was in a thrash metal band with his friend Ill Bill. I saw a clip of Necro's, it has Ill Bill's uncle in it, some middle-aged smackhead wearing a yarmulka(sp?) as he shoots up. Funny shit.

He's ok, probably the rapper i'd most want to listen to. I've heard some other song, don't think it was Necro, and the beat was the opening riff to Zombir Ritual on synths. Give me the real version anyday.

When I asked them, they said because he actually wrote about conflicting issues and not about pointless topics like 'bitches', 'ho's' and all that riff raff.

What are your thoughts on 2Pac?

The only good rap is early 90's gansta rap, i.e., NWA, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Snoop, 2pac, etc. But this shit they call rap these days is exactly that: a big old serving of shit.

Don't know that I would call RATM rap, but I have a lot of respect for the band. ZDLR is a little too "liberal" for my taste, but I have tons o respect for Tom Morello. I don't care if ya all...

my ass for it... or call 'em numetal. Who gives a shit?

The dude has done some really cool shit on the guitar and opened my eyes to stuff I hadn't thought of before. Listen to their first album. If you really truly love the guitar, metal aside, stereotypes aside, if you listen to him you can learn something from him. That's no fuckin' crock of shit. You can learn something from anyone, and anyone here can learn something from Morello. No BS, that's just the truth. The guy is an innovater. And innovaters deserve to be respected. I guess that's all I want to say about RATM...

i can stand a few tupac songs and a few eminem songs. older shit. eminem's new shit sounds gay as hell. he sounds like a 5 year old girl on helium. horrible!!! I love ICP. They're the shit!!!! Lyrics are funny as hell, and they have some good beats and good use of guitars.

Rap music today is nothing but samples of other people's work. Take for example that song that's all the rage on the radio now. Don't know the title or the author, (and don't care), but the song is pretty much the intro to Ozzy's Crazy Train being looped over and over with some gay ass beat in the background. As for the Beastie Boys, they're no better. I can't believe they get air time on rock radio stations. Their newest stuff has no instrumental parts in it. There are no guitars, no drums no shit. Just a sample they lifted froma Honda commercial. Which I think is pretty fucking pathetic. I also don't like Rage Against The Machine. They get on my nerves.

I used to like rap 3 years ago, I was actually really into it, but when I started playing guitar 3 years ago, I gradually came to the conclusion that rap was shite, I got into classic rock, and early metal, etc etc.

The only "rapper" (I say that because I believe he more or less went on stage and screamed at you) per say whom has ever wrote good lyrics are actually done anything amazing is Zach De La Rocha. Rage Against the Machine is quite possibly the most original and innovative band I've ever heard. My only regret is that I don't own the self titled album.

Every time I think your worthless ass is gone from this forum, you come back. I don't know why. Nobody here likes you. Nobody here has ever liked you. I've got a Ben Franklin that says your mother doesn't like you. She should have flushed you, you don't really offer any value to this world. Why do you even come here? Seriously? Every time you come here, you get flamed by almost everybody because even the dumber people here can see how worthless you are. I'm surprised you haven't gotten banned yet, because all you do here is say "that band sucks youse guys is teh ghey!!1" and "morbid angel rules, i want to devour steve tukcers smegma".

You don't offer anything of value here or probably anywhere else. For fuck's sake, you can't even offend people correctly, it's spelled F-A-G-G-O-T, and I'll bet that you just throw that word around to compensate for the fact that you are a closet queer with an abnormally small penis and you'll never feel masculine because of it. I guess I can't blame you, though, you shouldn't feel masculine. If I were as worthless as you, I wouldn't even feel like a human being.

When I see people like you, I can't possibly imagine how people could be opposed to abortion. You and your parents (if you even know who they are) should probably volunteer for a TV ad for birth control... 'see what happens when you don't use contraceptives? You are stuck with a worthless, ugly, she-man with an IQ of around 70." I guess the one thing about you that I can't complain about is the fact that your worthless, inferior genes will never be passed down to future generations because you will undoubtedly never, ever get laid unless there is force involved. You couldn't even drug a Kansas City whore badly enough to make her sleep with you.
