BASIC theory

heres my proposition...

i see many threads on here which teach theory. however, these threads all require a basic knowledge of theory, which i dont have. i know nothing. i want a thread which teaches BASIC theory. like, what is a 3rd, what makes something major or minor, what is a disonant chord.... the BASICS.

I'd hate to think guitar_demon wasted his time with 2 threads titled Intervals and Major scales...

Yeah, most of this stuff is pretty basic compared to much more advanced theory stuff.

What else is there that isn't everyone's waste of reading? All they gotta do now is reply in our threads....

Can I just check I have the modes right as it got confusing...

All these use the same notes, so they are 'relative to each other', ie A is the relative minor of C Major. Notice that the pattern just shifts left from one to the next.

Code:
1 2m 2 3m 3 4 4a 5 6m 6 7m 7 C Ionian WWHWWWH C D E F G A B THE MAJOR SCALE D Dorian WHWWWHW D E F G A B C minor scale E Phrygian HWWWHWW E F G A B C D minor scale F Lydian WWWHWWH F G A B C D E major scale G Mixolydian WWHWWHW G A B C D E F major scale A Aeolian WHWWHWW A B C D E F G THE (NATURAL) MINOR SCALE B Locrian HWWHWWW B C D E F G A diminished scale A Harmonic Minor WHWWH3H A B C D E F G# minor scale A Melodic Minor WHWWWWH A B C D E F# G# minor scale

Ionian, Lydian and Mixolydian are major scales since they have perfect fifths and major thirds.
Dorian, Phrygian and Aeolian are minor scales since they have perfect fifths and minor thirds.
Locrian is a diminished scale as it has a flattened fifth (= an augmented fourth) and a minor third.

So is this correct?

i have a question about modes. If your using a scale that has 7 notes in it like normal, are the modes names still the same or do they change based on what scale your using?

Music Theory

This is a cool site for music theory:

http://www.teoria.com

This is a site in Puerto Rico, both in English and Spanish.

It covers basic theory... that should help you.

Have fun!

See the thread on modes. It's based on what scale your using. Harmonic minor for example, has a major 7th interval instead of the minor 7th like the natural minor, this causes all our modes to shift due to that interval difference. For our modes now, it gives us modes like Ionian #5. Which in essence are more common to us, Ionian #5 = Harmonic Major. Phrygian Dominant (V) is another common mode of the harmonic minor, so yes the modes change based on the scale(diatonic), but very little, usually only an interval or 2, and they usually have a more common name than just Mixolydian b5b13. Correct me if I'm wrong theory buffs.
