RIAA trick from doom9.org
Here's the latest RIAA trick: adware infested WMA files. Instead of downloading a song, you download something, that thanks to a loophole in Microsoft's WMA DRM makes ads pop up on your screen. Needless to say that neither Microsoft, nor the ad companies involved who did not okay such practice are thrilled about this latest development. It does give the RIAA claims about what you can catch from using P2P services some merit though, but if it's them inserting malicious content, does that still count?

i think wma is the default file type that windows media player uses if you rip CDs from media player. i see the extension a lot on soulsuck, but i never DL wma's anyways. some do though.

Actually, it really is a hassle because you will frequently encounter the same problem with bad movie files. It is much worse with asf and wmv files, but I've also encountered this on some mpg and avi files.
Naturally, on wma files it doesn't really matter, because as has been mentioned, who the hell actually uses those?

WMA are bigger and really, just avoid them for MP3 files and you shouldn't have any problems. Actually, I find WMA to be giant pains in the far reaches of the anus because a lot of MP3 players don't play them, and the ones that do waste a lot more battery power than when they play MP3's.I don't rip in WMA format anymore.

You'll be fucked if you use p2p like kazaa or e-donkey, but p2p clients like soulseek should be okay, since you d/l from a single user (thus rendering a massive infection in the comunity a bit, impossible)

actually, sorry to correct you, but you can fit twice as many WMA files on an mp3 player than you can actual mp3's.
for example, i have two cannibal corpse songs that are the same length, 3:37:
post mortal ejaculation = 3.31 MB, mp3
drowning in viscera = 1.67 MB, WMA

That doesn't say anything. There is difference in bitrates, not only in length.
Also, different songs have different "data", so they might be bigger or longer.
But indeed, wma is usualy (well, on my comp thats is) smaller than mp3 but it's also more "compressed", meaning it takes more calculations for the PC to play it.
