A Challenge...
Hey,
Oh my god that fuckin' Christmas thread got outta control! So, I'm back for a couple days before I travel again and then I come home and then it's off to Florida. Also, I got a new wireless card so I'm gonna be able to hit metaltabs while I am travelling. But the point of this post is that I had a great idea while I was about 20,000 feet above Monterey, after a fuckin' stressful software demo (that went really well) and two heinekens. I want to make a challenge...
I want to write a rhythm guitar track. I'll do it on n-Track studio and make an mp3. Then I will post it somewhere on the web where you can download it. I'll write a check for $100 (US) each to the people who can write the best guitar (rhythm & lead in a single track), bass, drum and vocal track to go along with it. You gotta be able to record your part over it and post it back where everyone can download it. The winners will be decided by a poll here on metaltabs.com. When we're done we'll copyright the song under the names of all who are ultimately involved in the final track. Then we'll find some way to record it, for shits and grins, and if it's good enough we'll send it in somewhere. (i'll write another $100 check to the person who can get earplay for it on ANY legitimate label. No fucking around, it has to be listened to (and able to be confirmed) by some decision maker. And if it gets picked up by a label by some miracle, then 1/6 copyright. Fair is fair people). Depending on response, I will post a timeframe for this contest, not to exceed January 31, 2005. If this is a dumb idea don't make too much of a fuckin' mockery of it here on metaltabs. It seems like a good idea to me. If you have to bitch about this idea, please send email to please@likeireallyfuckinggiveashit.com. Thanks!
I'm in town for a couple days so please send feedback. If you think that sounds like a cool project, let me know. I'll come up with, record and post a rhythm track pronto.
RIPDime
PS - Shouting out to Wally, LBXXX and ChrisResendez --- 3 people I forgot on the Xmas thread that are alright. But Wally has a little bit of a rough edge to him. I guess that's what we want in a soldier.. Wally, don't be hatin' Unless you're hatin' Jihad O. Raghead. LOL
By the way Wally, in all seriousness, if you really are a soldier and are busting your ass for us, I do thank you man. Words don't do the thanks justice. And your tat rocks.

Yes.
Actually, up to $500. $100 each to guitarist, bassist, drummer, vocalist, and...possibly ....um... agent person, I guess.

I read part of this to Wally--the part about him, and he said he said the big FY to you because you hadn't told him Merry fucking Christmas. He was traumatised for awhile.
I also told him about your idea and he said that anything longer than 6 lines he doesn't read. Is there a Reader's Digest Condensed version or something for the literally challenged so he could maybe get the drift of it? He's a nuke but he hates to read to much. Btw, he's a sailor heading for a boomer.
And I appreciate your kind remarks as well as the Merry Christmas. Our military people for the most part are one heck of a team.

So.. Why are you going to give you $100?
And does it need to have drums or can it just be rythm and lead?

Looks like there's some takers that can probably make a competition for the guitar and bass happen. How about drums and vocals? Anyone out there? I should add, it probably won't be death metal or anything like that. I'll just write whatever rhythm guitar comes to me, so it will likely just be plain old RIPDime flavored metal.

I got an idea, too. I'll send you recordings of me playing. You'll send me all those hundreds of dollars just to make me quit!
hahaha I'm so brilliant. I suck on guitar.

Sure, I'm ok with that. What does everyone else think? Should there be a rule that you can only win one of the $100 prizes per person, to keep it wide open for all? Thoughts?

I'll be willing to write some bass for the song. Time to put my 10 years of bass practice to work, eh? Hell, I'll do vocals to. Death, growl, screams, or clean? Which do you you prefer?

It's gonna take a few days. I am gone for work again tomorrow, then got my mother-in-law coming into town on Tuesday night around the time I get back. I'm gonna have to lay it down over Christmas break or something. And I still have to make something up. This'll be something brand new. Sorry, but hey I'm a busy guy. Full-time job, four kids and a big move coming up. I'm thinking timeframe for this contest is going to be to have all voting done and pick winners by January 31.

Nice!~ I'll leave the vocal style to your discretion once the rhythm track goes down. You make the call and all the metaltabbers will vote on the best.
I'll give it another day or two for everyone's responses and feedback to come in and then I will post official contest rules and timeframe on this thread.

Cool, I can't wait to hear it. Knowing me, I'll probably show and throw in a little bit of each when it comes to the vocals.

dime, a request.
if your record the track, could you use a click-track or metronome? it will be easier to write a drumtrack that way, or you should rerecord it when the drumtrack is done.

Yeah, I can try to go with the clicktrack when I record. My timing is for shit sometimes anyway. I'm no fucking guitar monster by any stretch, but yeah, I'll do whatever I can to make it work. I'm hoping we can create a great fucking, very precise, high quality song with this...That's my goal anyways.
Oh, and you can call me RIPDime. Dime I'm not.

yes i have an excellent idea pay a skilled drummer/basss/vocalist 50 dollars each to do their best piece, then get your guitar teacher to do one.
that way you can spend 150 dollars, and get 350 back!

I think it would be a good idea to also post the tab of whatever rythm track you'll record.

I'd love to but I am a HORRIBLE tabber. I can read 'em and figure 'em out, but I can't say I have ever written out a decent one. LOL. My bad. Plus I don't think I'm gonna have time to do it. But how about this, if you like it you can tab it out and post it?

lol. Thats the point. I suck, I can't tab stuff out
I tought it would be handy, so its easier to write an cool lead track with stuff if you actualy know what is being played

No more takers here? I have counted 1/2 dozen or so guitarists who are interested, a couple bass, and maybe one that's willing to put together a drum track on a machine. Two people who will throw into the ring for vocals.
I'd really like to have some more sign on to take a crack at it in order to do this project. If you have interest please post it here and state what primary instrument you will be competing on. I'd really like to do it, but let's see some more interest. Let me know...

Ok, if that's it and no one else is interested I'm gonna print up this thread and figure out who's in on the contest. If it looks like enough people then we'll do it...

Official Rules & Other Bullshit
If you only read short posts, you should read this anyway. It might make you money. $$$
Ok, at first I thought if enough people aren't interested I'm not going to do this contest, because I don't wanna lay out that much cash on some BS. But I am pretty happy with the list of people who expressed interest. So, here is the list of people who said they'd give it a shot. If you're not on this list and you want to get involved that's fine, just do it (by posting your intent here) before I post the song up to the web, which will be in the next few days. That may seem like an asshole thing, but the main reason being I wanna see who has some balls around here LOL. Go ahead give me shit about it, I don't care.
Here is who said they're in so far:
Def - Guitar, Bass, Vocals
The Doc - Guitar, Drum Track
Transient - Guitar?
Brainsforbreakfast - Guitar?
BLS - Guitar?
Tatt3rd - Guitar?
Darko - Guitar
younguitarist - Guitar
MyOwnSavior - Bass, Vocals
deMANUfacture - Vocals, Guitar
BassBehemoth - (maybe) Bass
So here are the offical rules...
I was gonna say that a person could only win for one instrument. That keeps things real varied and makes the project more interesting. But, with so few interested so far, fuck it. You can win $100 for each and every instrument you provide that gets voted tops in a metaltabs poll. Here's the rest of the rules:
(1) Contest begins when I post my rhythm guitar track to the web and put a link here on metaltabs.
(2) You can enter as many instruments (including vox) as you like, with the potential to win $100 (US) for each winning track.
(3) You must record your track over the top of mine (or each successive winner) and re-post where metaltabs users can download it.
(4) Winners are decided by poll on metaltabs.com. I will set up the polls at the appropriate time. They will last 48 hours from the time I post 'em. Hopefully people will be responsive in voting.
(5) The contests will happen by instrument in a pre-arranged order. This is to insure that each new added instrument fits in with the rest. The order in which the contests will take place, and their timeframes are as follows:
(a) Guitar track - this track should include rhythm and lead and the contest will last seven days from the time I post the rhythm track.
(b) Drum track - You will have seven days from the time a winning guitar track is voted for on metaltabs.com
(c) Bass track - You will have seven days from the time a winning drum track is voted for on metaltabs.com
(d) Vocal track - You will have seven days from the time a winning bass track is voted for on metaltabs.com. You must write the lyrics as well as sing them. Please nothing too over the top. I am not a big your-skull-is-rotting-flesh-that-resembles-my-intestines-as-they-are-spilling-all-over-the-putrid-pavement kind of guy. I can handle some, but I'm paying for this and I would appreciate it not being TOO fucking nuts. That said...if you really need to fucking go crazy with it and that's what inspires you, OK, then go for it. Far be it from me to suppress art.
(6) Payouts will be paid as follows (sorry, I'm not rich and I've got four sons to feed. I have to pay on a schedule.) -- Guitar & Drum track, February 5 / Bass and vocal track, February 20.
(7) The recording and submission to a label aspect is a whole other deal, and we'll see if we even get far enough to warrant it first...
(8) Once you post your part, you may not re-post it. So make sure you got what you want before you post your work.
(9) Hopefully you have 50 posts or so on this forum before entering. If you are some guitar god coming around to enter the contest, then at least stick around afterwards and share some of your wisdom on this forum. If you feel like you need to make 50 posts in order to enter then please make them intelligent and worth reading. In short, be a legitimate metaltabs user.
(10) You must be able to receive payment via PayPal. This is to protect your personal information. Plus, I'm not really sure how else to go about paying people in other countries, and I have a hunch some of the winners will be abroad.
I think that's it. If not, I will post additions here before I post a rhythm track to the web. That's just so everything is clear BEFORE the contest begins. Please post questions in this thread if you have 'em.
LOL, I wonder what's going to happen with this...
PS - If someone else doesn't sign up for drums then The Doc is gonna get $100 even if he writes the shittiest drum track ever. That's no good...

I'm going ot make a sticky for the rules, updates, and possibly for the polls (if Dime wants it their) to keep this nice and organized.
Good rules by the way.

Oops...I don't think I ever opened this thread....I'm up for doing any or all parts . that being guitar lead, bass, drums (In your face Doc ), and vocals(any style when needed).
Oo, question....It is to my understanding that we should wait until each instrument is done before doing the next one? And once you do your part, it cannot be re-done?

Yes, a winner for each instrument in the contest will be chosen each week. I would recommend waiting to record each instrument (if you're doing more than one) until the winner is chosen from the prior week. Unless of course you're sure you'll be the winner each week. Then I guess you could go ahead and record 'em all right away. But you can only post each one during that part of the contest.

Well, i could try to do a drum track myself with a drum machine, that should be possible.
I might have a go at vox too, but i'm not sure if it will be worth posting.
So, you could sign me up for guitar and drum, and vox.

I have a great (semi-pro) editor called Cool edit pro. I could send it to ya, but i have to repair internet back home.
Oh yeah, another question for RIpDime concerning the rythm track:
You said guitarist get rated both on rythm and lead, does that mean they have to "re-play" your track as theirs, or write more rythm for the song?

I think you should see how many "real drummers" say they will participate before anyone else can make programed drums. Like say, the day before the guitar track is picked, see how many real drummers are willing to do it and if its to little, allow programmed drums to compete also. Just an opinion...

Yeah I'm going to need that software too. And as for lyrics, I'm guessing whoever sings must provide their own lyrics?

I quick message from a drummer on behalf of all the drummers,
Please record to a metronome, Please record Accurately and this is the biggie:
TELL US WHAT THE TEMPO IS!!!
for those of us using drum machines (I might if I cannot get a good live sound etc.) it is a pain in the ass to try and work out the Bpm of a riff exactly, so it would make life a little easier if you could tell us it!
thanks!

You have to write a rhythm to go with mine along with a lead and whatever various fret pyrotechnics you feel the song calls for throughout.

Possibly. That's a good idea, but due to slow response at first I already opened it up for the drum machines. Let's see how many more drummers come around and how the people who already put in to do drum machine tracks feel about it. What do you guys think?

You'll have until seven days after the lead guitar track goes down. I will most likely post the original rhythm track this weekend, so by the 26th. That means lead guitar tracks will have to be in by the 2nd of January. Then 48 hours to vote. You will most likely be able to start posting drum tracks around January 4. You'll have seven days to record and post your track.

Yes. You have to write 'em and sing 'em and they need to be original. Check the sticky by Darko for contest rules.

TELL US WHAT THE TEMPO IS!!!
for those of us using drum machines (I might if I cannot get a good live sound etc.) it is a pain in the ass to try and work out the Bpm of a riff exactly, so it would make life a little easier if you could tell us it!
thanks!
|
I'm gonna try! Man I'm feeling the pressure now. I better make a good track. My timing is for shit sometimes LOL but yeah, I'll record with a click track and give you the tempo.

Yeah....I just now thought about how hard it would be to write a MIDI drum track to a file with no metronome click.....

How long do you suppose the song will be?

Between four and six minutes approximately. I have just now started to pull some ideas together, but it's looking closer to 6 mins right now, but that's open to change as I develop it.

Yeah.
I know if certain people attempt the lead track, then I'm screwed, but fuck, I've got nothing to lose. If I somehow win, free $100 for me!

You know for me, it doesn't have to do with who has blistering speed or perfect precision or whatever. It is a lot more about who has the creative ability to come up with something that makes the song truly stand out. Hopefully the voters will see it that way too. By the way, the guitar track requires you do both a rhythm and a lead. So the challenge is to be able to lock into what I do and then take that and expand on it, with both rhythm and lead.

Hmm. I thought someone made a rythm track already or something. Okay.
So you supply us with a rythm track and we make a song out of it?

Hehe LOL yes I supply the rhythm track. I'm startin' to work on it. Sorry got a full time job and a full time family, it's in progress! Once I post it you need to add your part to enter the contest. Then everyone votes for the winner in each category. Full rules are in the sticky "RIPDime's Contest" by Darko. Please read for all the details...

LOL, I don't really think he was traumatised. And I don't care about being told to fuck off. He can tell me to fuck off all he wants, it doesn't bother me. I kinda thought he was just joking around anyway.

Yes, enter the contest to write a music track and possibly win $100. See the sticky by Darko for details.

And I appreciate your kind remarks as well as the Merry Christmas. Our military people for the most part are one heck of a team.

Thank you Wally!

Yeah, there will be some complexity to the basic riffs, but essentially each section of the song will repeat 2-3 times, so once you have the first couple minutes of the song you should basically be able to follow the rest pretty easy. I'm really not a guitar virtuoso or anything. It's going to be fairly straightforward.

Ok, im ok with that. I was hoping it wasnt a 6 minute grindcore song. Transients friend is probably going to come over and record me playing if it all works out. Hopfully it will work out because that would kick ass. I want to go down in metal tabs history as "the drummer of the metal tabs song".

Hehe nice. As Def said, the "online metaltabs band". I like the sound of it. Hopefully the whole thing will go down in history as something pretty cool on metaltabs. I know I'm having fun with it.

C'mon people. I wanna see some more people throw into the ring here. This contest is gonna be a lot of fun. Who cares if you think you aren't gonna be the best submission. Fuck it. You never know. What you do just might go along better with what I submit than anyone else. It would be really nice to have at least 6-8, even 10 musicians of each type sign on for each competition. If you are holding back because you can't record then say so. I can send you software for recording...
Who knows where this will go. Better to get involved, better to have tried and lost than not tried at all...
