Philips divx player
Anyone tried this thing? I got one from my gf as an early xmas present because she was tired of me talking about it all the time. My model is a dvp 642. I just load my xvid and divx movies to a cd or dvd and it usually plays them, like a dvd, so I dont have to watch them on my computer. Its been especially handy since I got on the bit torrent wagon thanks to bass behemoth. I've had a few problems with playback, but I can usually find some sort of work around from the forums. Its pretty cool.

Yeah, it's just like a stand alone dvd player. you can play regular dvds, mp3s on cds, whatever. But I like it the most because the majority of my movies are ones i have downloaded (divix, xvid) so they are on my computer. Now I can just burn them straight to disk without having to go through all the trouble of converting them to vcds or dvd format since the player plays straight from the avi format. I know i sound like a sales rep or something, but im not. im just really happy with this thing. like i said before though, sometimes i run into a movie that it wont play, but there's all kinds of free tools ive found on the net to fix any problem i might have. i haven't found a troublesome file yet that i havent been able to fix fairly easily.
another cool thing about this player is that if certain movie formats change or something over time and are no longer compatable with the player then you can go to the philips website, download an upgrade program for free, burn it to disk, put it in the player, and boom, it will load the new software automatically and now play that file. also there are all kinds of hacks for the player on the web that will let you play dvds from all regions instead of just the US. i recommend this thing definitely. plus its got progressive scan and all the other high end shite.
im not sure how much my gf paid for it, but the cheapest ive found it on the web is from walmart for like 66 bucks. great deal i think. you can go to the philips website and check it out under the audio video section. its listed as like dvp 642/17 i think.
so if you're like me and DL lots of movies but dont want to watch them on a tiny computer screen, get this thing.

Nice man, thanks for the info! I'll look around for one, I bet they're even cheaper here, with them beeing made by a dutch company and all.
the regional free thing is kickass too, it really sucks if you have american music dvd's and shit, they just don't play on my old dvd player (its a shitty one)
I don't download that many movies, but I do occasionally, plus I need a new dvd player, so why not invest in a decent one, huh?
thanks for the info man!

Awesome, I never even knew these things existed....I'm pretty sure there was ways to get around buying a divx player like you did....but I sure didn't know how nonetheless.
Thanks for the mention, but it sucks that the good BT sites are down...eh, I'm sure new ones will start up again..I mean, who is paying for Napster?

Two letters, two ASCII characters, one acronym. File-sharing at its best: DC++.

I used to have DC++, but I'm reluctant to get P2P software again because it fucked up my computer so bad...damn you Paris Hilton!!!!
Suprnova and CM were checked for quality and you always knew what you were downloading.

i was thinking about getting a diff video card to hook my comp to my tv, but i like this player better, just burn the dvd and go. im in the process of cleaning off my HD and making a mini dvd film library full of gore and pr0n.
yeah, suprnova and CM are down, but i guarantee others are popping up to replace them. right now i go to bi-torrent or piratebay. also, suprnova is working on an app called exeem right now thats supposed to be way better for tracking bits.
i've used practically every major p2p out there. BT is still the best imo. i dont have to jump through hoops trying to get someone to share a super rare file and i dont have to have a share quota of 40gb or whatever just to enter a hub with good files. plus trackers are EVERYWHERE even without suprnova and CM. just have to do some searching is all.
