heres an interesting topic- what brand has your favorite shape bottle? i know you guys are big on drinking out of the glass, and with good reason. but sometimes you drink out of the bottle, right?
i think karhu had the coolest shape, small little bottles very much like heineken here in the states. but hoegaarden is pretty cool too, dont know if that little bulb thing actually does anything for flavor..

Hoegaarden bulb thing? Pixz? I just have a pretty standard looking Hoegaarden pint glass.
http://secure.cnlcanada.com/lboc/st...arden_glass.jpg
My favourite session mug is a wide Propeller glass stein. It is very durable, easy to hold, and I bring it everywhere I go if I'm out drinking at a friend's.
For Belgian styles, I usually use my Chimay snifter glass. I only have a Leffe chalice that slightly compares. I am really fond of the duvel glass though, which I still have not acquired....lol.
Chimay - http://www.monasterygreetings.com/p...himay_glass.jpg
Leffe - http://secure.cnlcanada.com/lboc/st...leffe_glass.jpg
Duvel - https://secure5.worldaxxs.net/ssl.o...Glass_Duvel.jpg
I wish the glasses were of thicker glass though, especially the Chimay glass. It feels pretty cheap.
Edit - Oh...I noticed you said favourite bottle......godamnit lol.

Why does the bottle of Hoegaarden instruct the drinker to use a hexagonal shape glass? I found that rather strange.
The highest quality beverage I drank last night was Natty Light in a bottle. $6.50 a 12 packer. Lawlercaust.

that paulaner is pretty good shit..i can only get it at a couple stores here. we were looking at the beer and this german lady told us to try it and that it was really really good. i think she likes it a little more than i do, it was pretty good stuff though. was looking at it the other day, but wound up going with something i hadn't had before.
as for bottles..wychwood has some uniquely shaped bottles. i think my favorite overall would be the belgians or belgian styled beers. those short fat bottles. st peter's makes some weird bottles..i can't think of any other company that puts beer in a bottle quite like it. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/296/2442 it looks round there, but its more of an oval shape.
since bassb can't read and went on about glasses...my favorite one is my weihenstephan glass. that shit is tall as hell, has a good heft to it, and just looks nice i think. can't really see it in that picture..but the glass is sculpted in a bit of a spiral. http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c...r/IMG_7532s.jpg
i have no clue about the hexagonal glass. thats actually the first i had heard of it. damnit..all this beer talk makes me want to go to the store...but i quit drinking.

haha you got me on the April Fools joke.
In Canada we are not taught how to read; we are taught hockey and beer.
I agree with graf on the Belgian stubbies. THEY ARE JUST SO ADORABLE.
Also, the Rochefort and Westmalle bottles. They almost remind me of a beer/wine bottle hybrid.
http://www.balloon-juice.com/manage...s/Rochefort.jpg
http://www.konishi.co.jp/html/catal.../img/triple.jpg
Oh, and I really like the design of Orval glasses. SO CUTE. LOL.
http://web.mit.edu/~tcarlile/www/im...og/195orval.jpg
I'm not a big fan of 650ml bottles honestly..since I'd rather pour one drink other than to refill my glass. Same goes with the 500ml british bottles..I just don't like refilling my beer. The only exception where I don't mind is with a growler or rencetly a 750ml of Chimay Grand Reserve.
http://www.ratebeer.com/beerimages/52960.jpg
I am even a fan of even the North American 355ml(12oz) standard long neck bottle. Although, BROWN ONLY.

i agree, this thread is the shit. i think this is where i post the most too.
well i hit up the beer store a few minutes ago and it certainly paid off. they finally had some rochefort 10 so i grabbed a bottle. they only have so many bottles, so i'll probably wind up getting another to age or just drink. it was about 6.75 though for a bottle. not the big ass bottles either. the guy at the store says theres one person that comes in and buys it all once they get it in..i guess i beat that guy to it this time...well not buying them all, but getting some before that asshole takes it all.
i also bought a rogue bomber i don't think i've had. juniper pale ale. says "world champion pale" on the bottle. pretty solid beer. i think i like the sierra nevada pale ale better though. the bottle also says "a pale ale, saffron in color with a smooth malt balance; a floral aroma with a dry spicy finish from whole juniper berries." and lists it at 34 IBU. decent head but not huge..and fades away to leave just a small head. not sure about the lacing yet since i'm still drinking and adding the left over from the bottle (6fl. oz. too much for my pint glass)
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/2449/9272 got a free sample of this monkey wrench strong ale. a dark ale from the uk. not very strong at a whopping 5.3%ABV but other than that it was an alright ale. having tried it, i will probably not buy any down the road. it was ok, but there are way too many damn good ales out there.
last but not least, got some mix 12 pack from boulder beer co. from here in the usa. i haven't opened it yet, but from what i could see on the box, theres a porter, pale ale, and amber ale in there. looking forward to checking those out. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/130/9962 porter
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/130/4707 pale ale
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/130/3584 amber ale
i didn't realize this is the same company that makes the mojo ipa i just picked up the other day. still have a few of those left. long weekends are the shit!
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/130/6590 they also have this stuff hazed and infused. probably pick some of that up next time around. the guy at the store recommended it.

This is by far my favorite thread too. That's pretty decent price for the Rochefort 10 graf, even before it was knocked down to $3.33 per 330ml, it was I believe a little over $7. I just checked the NSLC website and there are only 3 bottles in the whole province, and it's about 4-5 hours away...Good thing I still have five in my horde!
Oh, the website is also undergoing maintenance; every month I wait for the new beers/specials a new month brings...obsessed about beer? nawwww.
My mom bought me some chocolate for easter which I she gave me tonight. A chocolate cd in a real case, a chocolate guitar, and a solid milk chocolate split beer bottle. lol. It has a Molson Canadian label though...

Ohh, I was reading about that Unibroue you posted just today! I want it!
Tell me you thoughts on the Rochefort 10 godamit..oh and could you tell me the expiry date? I just wanna know how old mine are compared to yours..if they've been de-listed here, they're probably a few years old.

actually its a combination of a few stores that i get all my beer at. if you have any of those fancy/organic grocery stores...check there, they usually have some good beer. case and keg does have a lot of of fucking beer though..thats the main store i go to. i wonder if they'd care if i took a picture of the store. they could probably use one for their website.
the label of the rochefort says L 24 01 12 and then 08:06 august 06? wacky belgians and their different way of printing dates.
it was a damn fine beer. very smooth for being as strong as it is. honestly, yesterday was a bit of a blur. maybe i'll refresh my memory with another one haha. it sucks they are almost 7 bucks..but it was good..and thats at least half the price of some 120min ipa.

I'm sure the the best before is 2012. My bottle's all "expire" in 2009. lol...tells you how long they've been on the shelf....I am however still going to rub in I paid $3.33cdn each for them though.

hah well as long as the conditions are ok, they can sit there a while i'm guessing. so maybe you paid less for better tasting beer?
i'm drinking the boulder beer co. pass time pale ale right now. not really caring for it. the amber ale was pretty good..the porter was even better. haven't had that winter or summer beer yet.
this pale ale is ok..not bad. its just that there are a lot of damn good pale ales and this just doesn't compare in my opinion. on the malty side i guess. smells and tastes a bit alcoholic. also the taste is kinda sharp or has a bite...carbonation i guess? maybe these chips are messing with it..i have 3 more to go, so i'll get a chance to try it without tainting it.
edit...this never summer ale is pretty good.

Exactly. I know that was the case with the first Chimay red I had..it was within months from "expiring" and it was excellent. However, I recently had one, as well as a Duvel(both BB end of 2006) and they did taste off. I always tend to try to get the bottles pretty far from the back, because you never know how long those bottles have been sitting in the light...or in some cases(punz), how many years.
I think of buying beer almost like rescuing them from the pound, the little ones are much better in their father's care.
lol.....seriously though.

i can't wait until the beers i'm aging will be ready. its only been about 4 or 5 months so far.
one thing i hate about those belgian beers..if i don't pour out just the right amount the first time, i think the yeast gets stirred up a bit too much and when i add the last bit the yeast changes the flavor a bit. not to mention they are only 11.2 fl oz to begin with.. other than that, i really like them a lot.

I just found an awesome liquor: Burnett's London Gin. It is made by the Heaven Hill company which makes terrible vodka, but this shit is rather good and pleasant to mix. I'm currently enjoying a gin n tonic and next up is cranberry juice + this stuff. Plus, it is only 11 bucks a liter. YAHOO. drunk on a tuesday.

Wine is not a bitch drink, unless you actually enjoy the taste.

i'll drink white or red...some i like, some i can drink without complaining, and others i never want to try again. i know nothing about wine compared to beer so i appreciate it much less. also, it seems to me there are more varieties of beer. long story short...i'll take a beer over a wine any day of the week.
hell yes..good friday is a day off for me! hows that for a work week. mon and tues off for passover, work wed and thurs, then take fri off for good friday. not being religious at all is the kicker. well..i guess getting paid for a full week of work is pretty good too. probably pick up some beer after work. going up to one of my best friends weddings this weekend, so i might bring up some really nice beer to have in celebration. they're gonna have a keg or two at the after party but it will be something like bud light. oh well..i could use a break from all the heavy ass beer. especially since i won't be exercising there.

anyone think drinking cider wouldn't be as bad as drinking beer as far as losing weight is concerned? or maybe i should say, not gaining as much weight while trying to lose weight? my first (baseless) impression is that cider is not as bad for me, but to be honest i am not 100% up to speed on the ingredients and processes involved in making cider. so its tough for me to say with certainty that theres much if any difference. maybe i should ask fbs in the fitness thread.

haha yea yea...i know the best way is to just stop fucking around and exercise a lot and eat right. i'm exercising and eating better now...sorta cut back on the beer, but not too much. was just drinking some cider (which was pretty good if you ask me) at lunch and thought about what the difference between the too would be. it was some woodchuck amber cider. i'd love to drink what i want and exercise more, but i think that would be fighting an uphill battle..maybe i should take a picture of my gut from a side view. hah
which zywiec? i've only had their porter. for me it ranked pretty low among porters..but i don't think poland is known for their beer making skills.
edit..just was looking at that zywiec on beeradvocate and saw it has a pretty good rating. maybe the one i had was spoiled or something.

I've had the Zywiec lager, it wasn't too bad..then again it was a few years ago when I didn't no shit about beer.
Well, I may be shit out of luck to have more of the Propeller RIS.......hopefully not..
However, there are rumours of a Propeller summer release.

It was the lager I has as well. I know fuck all about beer and I think it's average. I don't mind drinking it for a week or so seeing as though there are about 40 bottles that need consuming due to them being out of date in March.

i checked ba again and it says the lager is not recommended for cellaring...the porter is though. would've been sweet to find that old and cheap.
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/623/1666 it also says that the brewing company that makes that stuff is owned by heineken. i didn't know that.
today i bought a few things since there is no work tomorrow. i got a 6 pack of karma ale from avery brewing co. which tricked me. i figured it was an ipa or something because of the illustration on the box. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/30/23042 turns out its a belgian style pale ale. its a good beer though. at first it seemed strange to me, but before i knew it i was liking the beer and found it very easy to drink. i think thats what strikes me about it though. its much easier to drink than a real belgian ale. didn't seem to has as heavy of a body. good shit and not expensive. even though its not what i thought it was (i even poured it into a pint glass just to pour it from that into my duvel cup once i realized what it was) i am glad i bought it. avery makes some pretty good stuff, so i wasn't too worried even though it didn't say ipa on the box.
i also bought a few other bottles. got another rochefort 10 that i put with the other beers i am aging, a bottle of some random belgian triple i forgot the name of, and what i'm drinking right now, a bottle of brother thelonious. the bt is a belgian style abbey ale from north coast brewing co (they make some damn good beers..two of which are amongst my aging beers (old stock 2006 and old rasputin imperial stout)). http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/112/30282 i took a close up of the label so you can see but the picture and name are a play on that musician thelonious monk. ha i didn't even think of brother as in black guy.. then also the halo around his head are made of piano keys.
the beer itself is very complex in flavor and smell. it was a corked bottle which didn't overflow with foam at first, but it started slowing spilling out after a few seconds. nice head on the beer but it doesn't stay as thick and gets pretty small actually. its a very dark red but doesn't look hazy. it smells fruity and yeasty overall..but there are other spices mixed in there as well that i can't really place. maybe a hint of alcohol.. (9%) the taste is even more complex. its similar..starts out more with the fruity part which mellows out and you can pick up on more of the yeast flavor. once again theres other flavors too here and there that i'm not sure what to liken them too. the flavor is a bit strong, but its very good. not something i would want to drink all night for sure. it was 7.99 for a 750ml bottle, not as expensive as some of the other large corked bottles, but i would say its up there with them in taste.

Fine, strong ales were £6.49 for 4 and the local offie tonight. Ales this evening were:
Old Growler - Nethergate brewery. one of my favourites, I got two of them. Lots of flavour, nice and strong. Cashback. I highly recommend this one.
Barn owl - cotleigh brewry. Nothing to shout about, but hit the spot. Worth a try in any case. Flavour was diminished because I started with....
Hearth Warmer - Teme Valley brewery. At 6% abv, it's a strong ale, and has a very strong flavour, which isn't all that pleasant. At all. I was sucked in by the percentage. The first sip was nasty but, as with any strong drink, it improved with persistance.
Also, another great ale id Marston's Pedigree.

I realized last night that for me, eight Propeller ESB and a bomber of 6.5%IPA over only a few hours, makes a very clean, enjoyable buzz. haha, it was very enjoyable.
Hmm, maybe I'll start getting drunk rather than completely fucked.

Last night, I got belligerent on gin. I think this stuff is my new drink. It doesnt have quite the carbs that beer does and it gets me good and whacky. I went to the primere of Grindhouse and ended up getting kicked out (see a current theme) for trying to coerce a 40 year old woman sitting next to me to make out. HAH. I haven't been that hammered since TUESDAY!
Anyways, the gin is called Burnett's and it is highly recommended.

Who buys you beer? Mom?
Beeradvocate is usually spot on with reviews, but certainly there are many reviews(mainly in the 80s range) that can go either way. Bottom line, drink what you enjoy.
Oh, and LOL @ moe.

what kind of zywiec was it trans? i think i spelled that right.. i've only had one and wasn't encouraged to try their other beers by the taste of their porter. the porter was pretty dark though.
this weekend i just had a combination of bud light and bud select. i was gonna bring some good beers up there but my friend isn't big on ales or any medium to heavy beer. also i didn't feel like having a bunch of people that were there tearing through the expensive shit in a matter of minutes. funny/annoying thing was that the beer was disappearing so far we sent someone on a beer run before running out. by the time they got back, most of the people that were drinking left.
i had some nice beers tonight though. had some left over from earlier in the week. still have a unibroue ephemere, a couple avery karma ales (goes great with chips and salsa), and a bottle of woodchuck amber cider. killing this last high life before bed. figure i'd save those better bottles for a time when i wasn't about to go to sleep.

Yum, Bud..... I don't think we get Bud Select up here, but I don't think that's a bad thing.
I had a bottle of Orval and a 750ml of Chimay blue last night during UFC. The PPV was a fucking huge disappointment. Diego lost, George St. Pierre(the canadian) lost, and after that my friend was so upset he was almost in tears. haha, no joke.
My 17 year-old lady friend tried my Chimay blue and actually enjoyed it! haha, I was thrilled. I still have two more 750ml bottles in my room that I'm trying to age.
It's getting to the point though where I really fucking enjoy that beer. And it's about $10.40cdn for a 750ml bottle, so I don't mind buying it often. I think it's much better than the red, mainly because I find the red to be a little thin, as opposed to the blue's seemingly perfect texture. And popping the cork scared the hell out of everyone in the room as it's carbonated as fuck.
TRANZ - PICK ONE UP TODAY. LOL.
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/215/2512
I drank the beers from my dad's Playboy chalice. haha, it's fucking awesome...and very durable!
I only had one drink of a double shot tequila and apple juice...it tasted like Pine Sol..the tequila would definitely be better on it's own.
Edit - Oh, and a new beer documentary was on A&E last night titled "The American Brewer". I was kinda buzzed watching it, it didn't delve into much complexity, but it gave a fine depiction of how the American beer started.

yea, the blue kicks ass. i've had that the most..then the white. i've only had the red once. luckily i found out that the whole foods has a ton more beer now and they have it, so i'll probably give it another try one day.
you aren't missing much without bud select. i guess if i sat down and tasted that and bud light i could tell the difference..but i wasn't paying any attention..just drank t hem and didn't notice a difference.
i submitted the idea of changing the pictues on ba to also have a glass of the beer so you could see the color of it as well, but it got shot down. they just want the bottle in the picture so people will no what to look for at the store. also he said if people had the wrong kind of glass it wouldn't be good. i guess another thing i didn't think of is that with a flash all the beers look a little darker. oh well.

Well, Harp is a very easy to drink lager, while Guinness is a very creamy stout. Like apples and oranges really..try them both.
Graf - I know what you mean about showing a picture of the actual beer, but I guess there would be a lot of uproar about the glassware/lighting/proper pour/etc. Godamn beer geeks. lol.

i'd try both too if you haven't had either. as bassb said, they are apples and oranges. before i got into any craft beer or microbreweries..or even less common imports, guinness and harp were two of my favorite beers. ha you could even try mixing them and making a black and tan. i've never tried one like that, i have heard of people doing it though. i still think they are both good beers..just now that i have a lot more experience with beers i had never even heard of at the time, they just aren't at the top anymore.
hah i didn't even think about the pouring when i was thinking of reasons it would be better to just leave the glass with beer out of the pictures. damn beer geeks indeed.
gotta see how i am doing on weight...this was one of the random weekends i didn't hang out and drink heavy beers all weekend.

Marston's Old Empire = God of pale ales. I've been drinking it exclusively for the past two months*.
* Part of the reason is that I can get three bottles for £5.

I noticed my local grocery store just started carrying Hobgoblin dark ale, and decided to give it a shot. Twas rather expenisve + $4.32 american for one pint. This reminds me of a more alcoholic porter, but less dense. I'm really enjoying this brew and will probably pick it up again when I get some more money.

That's awesome that your mom will support a responsible beer habit. Cheers to her!
The traditional black and tan is a Bass Pale Ale and a Guinness. At least Bass has some taste as opposed to a Harp.
I'd definitely have a Harp over all the other macro lagers I've ever tried though.

Shit, awesome job. How much did that set you back?
Anyways, I'd rather drink and watch UFC than have my picture taken. That is a Chimay blue in my Playboy chalice.

Holy balls, why didn't you just buy the Duvel gift set? I wonder if those glasses are of the same quality?

22 isn't that bad. 10 bucks for shipping is a tad steep..but they are shipping glass. its also not uncommon for companies to charge a little over the actual shipping cost..i guess thats the "handling" part. i think the gift set i bought was $16.99. it came with 4 11.2 fl oz. bottles of duvel and one glass.

Shit, I assume you ordered them within the states..please tell of the quality!
I'm going for Fish and Chips tomorrow at a brewpub I've never been too..can't fucking wait!
After that, my friend and I are going to teh exotix beer store, splitting a growler of Propeller RIS, watching Grindhouse and then resume drinking.
I can't wait to see if Premier Wines have changed their stock.

Hopefully, you have more luck sitting through that movie than I did. I'll probably go next time either really baked or just mildly drunk.
Thursday night is karaoke night. I'ma try to bone a bitch this time.

haha. Yes, the plan is to just get mildly drunk for the movie...and then drunk afterwards.

had a taddy porter from samuel smith with lunch today. a damn good porter. i think it has grown on me a bit since the first time i tried it not too long ago. the store also had another lager from ss, a different one from the lager i tried a few weeks back...i was going to get it since i haven't tried it before...but in the end...
porter > lager
i'll probably try it next time i go to that store though.

Hell yea, Samuel Smith's Taddy Porter is so fucking delicious. I suggest drinking as many of them as you can before summer.
Anyways, what are you guy's opinions on Hobgoblin?

i liked the hobgoblin. i've only had one bottle though. they scarecrow was pretty also good. i think i might've liked that one a little more than the hobgoblin, or else it was the other one i tried which i can't recall. either way, i've only had each of the three i've had once or twice tops. i guess thats reason enough to buy some more.

English ale and English IPA are fine drank out of a pint glass, right? Is there any better glassware for the two types? (I just want an excuse to buy some expensive/exotic glasses )

I thought it was damn good. After hearing everybody talk about it on here i went and bought a 6 pack of it. I even drank when it was like slightly cold and it was still damn good.

yea, i'd say both of those are pint glass beers. double/imperial ipas should be consumed from a snifter, tulip or oversized wine glass..according to what i've read on beer advocate. if you aren't sure about a beer..check that site. thinking back..i can't recall a single beer i haven't been able to find on there. if i had at some point..there was only one or two tops. i'm sure there are plenty that aren't there..but they are probably pretty small brewing companies that only produce and sell it locally. (they have some of those types of brewing companies listed though.)
after all this talk about wychwood earlier, i stopped by the beer store to grab a couple bottles but they were all out. no big deal...i bought a 4 pack of la fin du monde and a bottle of yeti imperial stout! both of which are amazingly good beers.
bass - i bought some bubble wrap while i was over in that area. i'll probably package the beers tonight and try to get it in the mail tomorrow or the next day during lunch or something. i think i might need you to pm me your address again though, i'm pretty sure i accidentally deleted that pm.

I think everyone should drink 40s of Steel Reserve.
Cheaper, more of it, and high gravity. Fuck taste...I think it tastes great.
P.S. Yeah, I'm tipsy and had a 40 before orchestra rehersal. I loved it....didn't even hinder my playing.

they don't sell 40s in florida. largest bottles we can buy at a random store are quarts.
regardless...not only does the beer i'm drinking taste great, its 9% abv which would make it a little stronger than steel reserve.

Now thats metal/punk or whatever you want to call it. Going to an orchestra rehearsal after drinking a 40 of the nastiest beer known to man. Do yourself a favor and upgrade yourself to an Old E. You deserve it.

alcohol preference.. right now? 33.8 oz cans of Asahi
p.s. i hate porter.. if you want porter, get a stout and pour a cup of coffee in it plus a tablespoon of ipecac, and that's what it tastes like. no thanks.

haha funny thing is, i can taste coffee in the porters..well most of them...but i don't really like coffee. i love porters though. i'm drinking an imperial stout right now and it has a nice roasted malt/coffee kinda flavor to it.

Wow, Steel Reserve got a 70? That is way higher than expected. I don't drink that shit because of the hangover the next day.
Last night I drank a plethora of gin and today, I feel swell. This is my new beverage.

yea i was a bit surprised by the rating too. maybe pot was there voting a bunch of times?
i think a lot of people make sarcastic posts and ratings for some of the beers. i know i couldn't believe some of the other ratings for similar beer..

Well, a 70 is very terrible on the rating system of that site...even a low 80 rating can yield a pretty mediocre beer.

yea, you're right. i just can't help but compare it to grades in school. a 70 is ok and passing at least hah. a better indicator perhaps would be the thumbs up and thumbs down ratio for each beer. 72% gave the steel a thumbs down.
i agree with tm, upgrade to the king of malt liquor! olde english 800!

I bought a six pack of Unibroue La Fin Du Monde on Wednesday...FOR $18.95cdn.
They only had about 4 different Rogue styles...said they are getting there usually shipment the 2nd week of May....which includes 19-22 Rogue varieties. Needless to say, I'm going to be there.
Anyways, I have money to blow on beer and don't have any plans tonight. LOL.
