i love all sorts of more "pussy" music.... i actually listen to alot of punk... i love some of the more popular ones like nofx, rancid, & lagwagon-ish type stuff... but i also like alot of the more grungey/politacl gutter punk stuff like humble gods.
good tunes...
i'm also into alot of stuff like the cure, REM, dave mathews band, the pixies, the talking heads, ect.
ambient crazy music is where it's at...radio head, bjork, msi, ect... bands that just do origional shit.
screamo,emo,emo-core, metalcore, punkmetal, ska, skacore, hardcore, post hardcore, ect... i like alot from every category... good tunes is good tunes imo...
cohead and cambria are pretty good actually... nice guys and talented musicians...
another band that i think is really good. rufio, very emo/punk stuff but there drummer is really good, like fast clean punk/skank beats n' stuff... and the guitarists are actually pretty good too.
though i mostly play heavy music because that's what kind of band i'm in and heavy is the music of choice between all of us. in my spare time i right some radio friendly catchy tunes with some of my friends and all that... but in the end i guess i'm just heav'.

i listen to alot of stuff, if it's not metal its usually classic rock, classical (the original heavy metal ), renaissance/folky guitar (ala blackmore's night), some straight industrial, and yeah thats about it, i never got into punk except for some of the grunge punk hybrid stuff (like some of the offsprings early to mid works) and i do like some old grunge

The Cure, Radiohead, Coldplay (one of my favorite non metal bands), SRV, BB King, alot of classic rock, some 80s "metal" (Def Leppard, bitch), Jeff Buckley, Pete Yorn, Dave Mattews Band, and other assortments of rock and blues. Oh, and my favorite borderline metal band: TOOL!
Most of the time you'll find me listening to Folk/Doom Metal like Agalloch and Winds. While I do love some death metal, I'm usually not listening to it.

I listen to 80's rock and classical, that's about the only non-metal i listen to.
\m/ But metal is the best \m/

I listen to 80's metal/hard rock occasionally. No, not Bon Jovi. I also love Faith No More, and Mr. Bungle.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: anyone who listens to metal, and only metal, needs to get out more.

I used to LOVE the Misfits, I have like 5 massive posters, several shirts, and a signed shirt by Robo, Dez, Jerry Only and Doyle...which my drunk brother ruined as he through a tv dinner at it years ago...(On the night when I honestly wanted to kill him)
There old shit is better....Punk got me into metal, metal got me into death metal. I listen to some jazz from time to time, strickly for the bass though.(Jaco, Wooten, ect.)

RPG music, Anime music, and emocore. AFI, Thrice, Funeral For A Friend, Coheed And Cambria, From Autumn To Ashes, My Chemical Romance. AFI's Silver And Cold has sentimental value to me. For RPG music, Chrono Trigger will always be my favourite. Anime music - Noir, Princess Mononoke, Arjuna, Spirited Away. A bit of metalcore, some hardcore along the lines of old AFI and Avenged Sevenfold. I also like gregorian chants.

Define talent. Everyone has their own definition. It's an opinion thing, and all opinions are equally valid because that's what they are - opinions.

talent- your ability to play your instrument.
i was pretty much describing ignorant death metal kids that think a drummer is the best because he can blast beat really fast. but hell, i can play fast and clean blast beats n' shit and i hardly consider my self to be a great drummer.
then they make fun of punk drummers for playing the same beats all the time, which is alot like death metal in a sense.
then the guitar thing, punk doesnt require talent in there minds because it's not tremelo picking and shredding...
then vocals, i really don't see how a death metal kid can call punk vocals corny, c'mon, read some death metal lyrics...

yeh, don't get me wrong i like a fair share of death metal and black metal just as i like a fair share of punk stuff too.... you can't say a punk band is corny and has no talent because of powerchords and polotics. and then go and listen to alot of death metal or especially black metal....
i like metal & core type music alot because it's heavy and i like heavy stuff... it's funner to play and get into. it just apeals to me.
but i have alot of love for other shit. music is music whether it's bad or good..
rap, most rockers and metal heads don't like rap.... because in alot of cases it's not very musical... but if you ever listen to any good underground hip hop stuff with battle dj's and freestyle shit... man, hats off to those fuckers...
i don't mean this poser snoop dawg/feminem shit about sippin 40's and fucking hoes and shit... i don't really dig that stuff.
this battle dj shit takes talent... i was actually into battle dj'ing before i played guitar(back when i was like 12) which i must say has a big influence on my geekyness about some gear...
but that shit is just like playing an instrument.... there are different techniques, you have to have a clear concept and under standing of rythem, pitch, speed, and what sounds good together. usually there will be one turntable, drum machine, sampler or sequencer that is playing the beats and shit, while you use the other one for the actually "scratching" and making the scratches sound good is harder than it sounds.... the cross fader and other parts of the mixer are also played with to affect the sound... its very complicated shit and you really have to get the feel for it... after a while i just realized i was a bit to white for it, sold my shit and bought some guitar shit. much more up my ally. but i still listen to alot of that cool shit, like the invisible scratch piklz, and the world famous beat junkies... that shit is a trip.

Fuck burzum. That comment shall be stricken from the record... Don't mention Burzum and acoustic music in the same sentence. Thats a big taboo thing.
I don't know if I said it before, but Dredg is a really good band. I recommend them to anyone who likes lighter music.

Dark Ambient and Neofolk are great, like:
Lustmord
Kerovnian
Sol Invictus
Arcana
Death in June
Raison d'ętre
Wongraven
Tangerine Dream
Vinterriket
Tenhi
Klaus Schulze
Blood Axis
Some of these are even better than the best acts from Metal.

Neofolk is fucking great. Do you have any bands that I should look up? I know Agalloch is under Neoclassical Folk/Doom or something like that, so look them up if you haven't.

I have 300% Density but I can't remember where I read about them beforehand. Great album - I can highly recomment it to anyone who likes a mixture of jazz, metal, weird time signatures and hip-hop.

Exactly. Look at the past 2 Cannibal Corpse albums. Talent? Yes. Boring as fuck? yes.
While I still like it, I'm persuing lighter music (the folk, doom, etc.). To me, death metal (except for Death and Opeth of course) have become very TRITE and boring. Not many bands are releasing good material anymore.

I could go on. All have put out excellent albums within the last couple of years.

No, I'm just listening to what I like. I don't get much new music. You have to understand that.
And besides, this was suposed to be a "non metal" thread.

i'm not saying i don't enjoy simple music... hell, most people prefer it and they just don't know it.... why do you think nobody listens to classical?
but somebody talking shit on punk because it's simple powerchord rock and skank beats? when many metal songs they do very similar shit...(as far as powerchord rock with fast repaditive beats.)

Blood Axis, Sol Invictus, Dead Can Dance and Death in June are the top bands from neofolk. Other good ones which are worth to check out: Wongraven (Norse folk themed), Arcana (epic folk), Perunwit (slavonic folk) and Tenhi (finnish folk) and also some heavy folk influenced metal bands: old Ulver (Bergtatt) and Skyforger.

I'm amazed to find myself agreeing with andrewc. Except for that last part, let's not get into personal insults just because Dissection's a retarded mainstream faggot who never makes an opinion untill the majority has spoken.
And Varg sounds nothing like that, Dissection's mother has a much deeper voice.

I don't know what's wrong with you people anyway. Why the fuck do you pay out black metal and then get all defencive when your music gets insulted? Yes, some people like their ears to bleed and some don't. It's not about liking something against your will. It's about respect. Instead of "I don't like it, it must be crap and I will pay it out until the end of my life" isn't it easier to say "I don't like it, it's not my thing"? As musicians, anyone can learn from other genres.
All the genres in metal have the same roots, and you can always, always trace it all back to when it all began with rock and roll. You can't change anyone's opinion by insulting their taste, unless they're fucking conformists, and metal is partially about not conforming to current musical standards (well, it was in the begining), so if you insult someone else's music taste you're wasting your breath, motherfucker.

That isnt quite true, sure most of them started with rock and roll, or more specifically thrash and "Heavy Metal"(e.g. Acca Dacca/Maiden/Priest) in the late 70's and early 80's but your Grind came about from the mighty Napalm Death playing their "fucked up punk" music, which was (at the time) in no way really related to the thrash/heavy metal scene.

true, but some bands in every genre suck and some bands rock... i'm not a big black metal guy, but some of that stuff is good.... but most of what i've heard is just retarded and you can't even take them seriously as a band.

I like listening to just plain and simple rock and roll. Richie Valens, for instance is cool. Billy Peek, Jimi hendrix.
I don't like listening to classical as much as playing it in the school band. Now that is awesome!!

Crust Punk envolved into grindcore.
Napalm Death played Crust punk, but sped it up and added growls.

Actually, no, Punk came from thrash influence. Slayer has influenced more punk than you can imagine. New wave of british heavy metal bands such as Priest and Maiden also spawned alot of thrash.
Rock -> Black Sabbath -> Metal -> NWOBHM -> Thrash -> Punk.
Don't bother correcting any of that, because this is based on what I've read in my years of being into music. But I'm sticking to this.
PS - Napalm Death is Extreme Metal. They were death metal before there was such a term.

Napalm Death were releasing demos in the early 80's (82 from memory was when they formed) and they were heavly influenced specifically by punk, this was external to the thrash scene that was in san francisco and germany, and they were in no way influenced by thrash in the begining.

Hardcore metal/punk is actually much older genre than any thrash (70's punk bands, when the punk was really punk, not any nowadays pseudoshit).

exactly. punk just isnt true punk nowadays, you got bands like blink 182 mixing it with emo, offspring theyve got emotional shit, etc etc.
its the other way around, punk led to thrash metal.
everyone knows it, slayer started thrash, mixing influences of west coast punk and NWOBHM like judas priest.

thats exactly what im getting at.
and yes, trendkill thats also right!!! varg vikernes was at least correct in saying "guitar is a nigger instrument."
but then, black people have had many styles of music. from jazz, to blues, to rock'n'roll and now today rap (if you call it music, i call it disposable rhythmic crap) and im probably missing one or two in between.
its undeniable, black music has been influential.

Angry Stampy Dance Section
I am sick and fucking tired of you thick-forehead cunts talking about rap as if there was only one type. You're doing exactly the same thing as people who see Fred Durst on the television and immediately assume he's a metalhead because he's an incoherent, tattooed, ugly, stupid douchebag. Imagine all the faggoty genre-squealing you'd do if someone told you Drowning Pool was hardcore.
Quid pro quo, fucktards.
