This is something you shouldn't get mocked for, as you can't be expected to know.

User CP -> Edit Avatar -> click Use Custom Avatar, and then either load one up from the internet or your own files.

When you are in the chatrooms User CP is just below where you are, and Custom Avatar is in the left hand side.

Just remember that normally this goes in the RTT or PM
