brewing beer/wine
I've started a new batch of beer and i was wondering if any of you brew your own beer. And if you do, have you got any techniques that help you?

My friend Conan brewed some.....he was a weird weird soul that commited suicide last year. It was sad cause he wasn't at school for about 3 months then all of a sudden he came and said bye to all the people who were nice to him, which wasn't many...maybe 4 or 5...and the next day he was in the paper for commiting suicide. But his beer was good...tasted about 8%

Shitty deal about your friend man.
I'm brewing mine at around 5%. Pilsner.

You buy a kit that contains wort and yeast. You boil 4 litres of water, and mix the wort with it. Then you add cold water up to 23 litres in a 5 gallon bucket. At a certain temp, you add the yeast. Then you let the fucker ferment for around 6 days.
When it's fermented you put it in a carboy (big glass container) until it clears (around another 6-7 days). Syphon back into bucket (to get rid of the sediment at the bottom). Then bottle. Let bottles sit for about a week to finish carbonation. Then it's ready to drink. The longer it sits in the bottles though, the better it tastes.
You get around 66 bottles for $15. Not a bad deal.

I haven't ever made beer, but I think that complete darkness is a key to good beer while its fermenting. I would like to make beer but I'm to lazy so I just buy it instead

Yeah, i've heard that complete darkness and constant temp. help fermentation.
I was just wondering if anyone had little tricks (every activity has em'), that would affect taste etc.
You can make liquour with any fruit or vegetable really. I'm not sure exactly how (something to do with the fermenting), but some old dude, was explaining to me once how he made shine outta apples.

There's a local band here (DE) that brew their own beer, you could join their forum and they'd explain the process to you.
I'd post their website and name but it'd be spamming, so unless I get an OK from a moderator I won't do it

It's easy. Keep it nice & warm ('bout 22 degrees should be fine) & out of sunlight while you're priming it. Leave it for 2 or 3 weeks if you're none too sure about the process. Then bottle it, DO NOT put in too much sugar or you'll have a shed full of alcoholic hand grenades, wait for what seems like way too long, & then enjoy.
The most fun is trying to decide how much sugar is too much when you're bottling it up. This will make all the difference to how it tastes, how fucking long it takes to pour because it's so bastard fizzy that it's like a bubble bath set to 'ridiculous', & also makes a little bit of difference to the alcohol content I think.
Oh yeah, & don't let your bum housemate experiment with what was a good batch of stout by having the fucker pour honey stright from the jar into the BOTTLES & ruin all of your shit in one fell swoop. That's a good tip.

Probably at a supermarket. There are about 4 beer/wine stores in my area that sell the kit. It goes for about $70-$80 for the kit, including the first batch. Then each additional batch goes for around $20.
Thanks for the tips, stuffisgreat. A friend of mine used to double the yeast dosage, which in turn doubled the alcohol content. Another friend of mine was wanting to get a kit and use honey instead of sugar. Do you know if that'd work?

Hahaha, well my mom works right next door to the damn thing, and I can use my moms parking spot , but for one you have to be 19 (im 18, but on september the 18th ill be 19), so I have to wait a bit, but local home made stuff blows, stuff from NB I would not trust just because its from NB, stuff made in Newfoundland is just moonshine, I should know im from there (thank god I grew up in ontario though, or I would be talking like a newf... b'y), and well I want to try out what you punks from PEI can do to beer.

There's one local brewery here(the gahan house), but the beer is fucking horseshit. It's all the fucked up shit, like honey ale, and stout and all that bullshit. I'd get in shit for sending you beer anyway, cuz you're underage. (are u allowed to send beer?)

I started a bought a new bucket today, and started a new batch. So now when the bucket is ready to go into the carb. The carb is ready to bottle. If I continue this for a month or so, I'll have 66 beer ready to drink every 6 days.
in a month i'll brew 264 beer.
A year 3432!!

Jesus Christ! Someone back there said it was only $15 to make your own. I'm not putting out $80 bucks to TRY it if I don't know if I could get away with it.

I'd rescind that statement about stout if I were you. It's hearty, good, tastes wonderful, & is good for you. And anyone else out there that doesn't like stout, I hope that cancer takes you.
Anyway, if you're putting honey in your brew, be fucking careful, because you can very easily hose an entire batch. If you're going to do it, do it early, & ask the local honey nerd how you can get all that beeswax & other foreign shit out of it before you do it. I don't know these things because I've never been curious enough.

when you quote stuff and you know it is spelt wrong you put it as is and put [sic] afterwards to signify you know its wrong

i think it stand for "spelling incorrect"
You know stuff, i've never actually drank stout. So i'm being ignorant in that statement. I'll get my friend to ask about the honey issue. Personally I'll just use the sugar (i don't feel like fucking my beer).

"(sic)" is usually used after a word to serve two main purposes:
1. To absolve the writer from blame for a spelling mistake, ie when there is a spelling error in a reproduced quotation.
2. To indicate that the spelling mistake was delibrate.

brewing beer/wine is nonsense.
I mean, you drink it faster then you can produce it
whats the fucking use of that?
fuck that, just go to the supermarket and buy discount premium pilsener, all a man needs!

Not really. Once my first batch is run, If I keep brewing consistently I'll get 66 beer every six days. I don't wanna drink that fucking much. Around here we don't have discount beer (and we can't buy it in a supermarket either ). So it's $20 for a dozen.

I went to work half-drunk a couple of times, but about two years ago it was so bad that my chief told me to get back into bed.
he didn't really care though because I've worked at the place for ages, 'shit happens' ...

I do too. But work is easily forgotten after a bunch of beer and you think you're fine. I just stay away from staging. My boss is fine with it though. He's been young before.

Drink Stouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut!
Black terror. Thick, glutinous, palsied doomwater. Stout will put machinegun turrets on the hairs on your chest. It's got vitamin B in almost poisonous quantities & will get you pissed as a fiddler's bitch.
Stout, I say.
[edit]: Anyone living outside of the UK may want to avoid trying Guiness. Apparently it doesn't taste like Nitrogen & urine over there, but it bloody well does everywhere else. I've drunk Guiness in four countries throughout Australia & Asia & it's shite.

Ah, Guinness. Now we're talking! I've yet to sample it in Ireland (where it's taste is legendary), but it's still pretty good over here in England.

If you get the chance, try Newcastle Brown Ale. Not sure if it's the British or the Australian Newcastle that they're referring to, but it's still a fairly fine ol' drop. Good, dark, pus brew of healthytude.
If he ever bothers to post on these forums, I'm sure Sane'll vouch for the goodness of Irish Guiness.

"Newky" Brown is top class! It's got to be cold though, so make sure you're in a reputable pub before taking the plunge - there's nothing worse than warm Newky Brown. Newky Brown (or any brown ale) and Guiness is quite nice - it's called a "black and tan" over here. Also try a "Fifty" (Guinness and bitter) or a "Golden" (bitter and lager) if you feel like mixing the different tastes and textures up a bit. Mmmm...

That German beer sounds... interesting. Bayerisch Hell? It's got to be a metalhead's beer with a name like that!
