Hypocrisy
I'm looking around at Hypocrisy, I see most reviews reccomend Osculum Obscenum, what do you think? I've only heard a few songs off of Catch 22, so I don't think I really know the sound of the band judging from the reviews of that album. Death metal? Melodic metal?
or should I just skip the band

Catch 22 was their "experimental" phase. Basically, anything BEFORE that you'll be happy with.

each album has somewhat of a different style going on...4th Dimension is just classic heavy metal basically, much like Carcass' Swansong...I've heard the Abyss (or something like that) is more of a death metal or thrash album...so first figure what style you want, then ask around again...personally, there are much better bands to get into, but if your somewhat new to metal, then Hypocrisy is a good start.

From Hypocrisy I'd recommend
Abducted or Into The Abyss

I have every hypocrisy album, and they all fucking rule. PEter Tagtgren is a musical genious. Best cd to start with is 10 years of chaos and confusion as it has all their styles on it( kind of a best of cd), and some rerecordings of old songs.

I hated Catch 22, it seemed a bit overdone

Damn! A Hypocrisy tab without Inverted chiming in? I agree with VitalRemains. Go with the 10 years of chaos and confusion cd. That way you can see the changes they made to the sound over the years. My top pick is Abducted. Hands down. If you like Hypocrisy then you might like PAIN. Its not death metal although Peter is still the brain behind the band. It is kind of like melodic Rammstein with english lyrics.

Hypocrisy is one of the if not the most "origional" bands out there. Their albums vary so much its unbelivable.

Do their first few albums have a razor-sharp guitar tone and down-tuned and simple riffs like Entombed and Grave for example?

What the fuck do you like then? All you do is criticize peoples music tastes.

I like their song 'Osculum Obscenum' but have never gotten around to getting any of their stuff. I saw them live in November though, they put on a pretty decent show.
I plan on picking up some of their stuff over the Summer. I'm still deciding between 'Osculum Obscenum' and 'Abducted' (which most of my friends have and recommend). Any suggestions from fans in this thread for which of the two to get?

Penetralia, Osculum Obscenum and Inferior Devoties are my favorites.
