well Emg's sound good, if thats the tone you're looking for that is, active pickups are nice, but if you have a super tube amp I wouldn't buy emgs I guess.
81's are in my opinion the best sounding emg's for the bridge pos, for the neck an 85 would do great.... I guess a set will set you back for about 2-300 bucks with installment. (for a pair that is!)
in your case you would need 3 emg's huh. thats badass. but if you want to use one of the old pu's you can't combine them with active emg's, you can combine any passive pickup with another though

I personally would put in some sd's in ur guitar, perhaps an invader and a 59, they also sell actives aswell.
I never really suggest amps as i believe its up to each players individual taste, but i'd buy either a second hand ENGL, perhaps a powerball or savage or the amp which i'm goin to get which is the B-52 ST100-A with a s cab. Either way, the amps rock,

You can combine passives and actives, I've done this b4. I had an 81 in the bridge and an EMG Select in the neck, and it worked.

EMG is crap in my opinion...
I have heard that even Metallica has finaly undertod that, and has now started to use the excelent Gibson picups who allready is in the guitars...
Seymore Duncan is more my taste. You could consider SH-2 Jazz, SH-4 JB who is the picups who comes with almost all the american Jacksons.
You don't need that batery too..
What gear do you have? It's the player who is important to make good sound.

if you want to use a pedal for your dist, i'd always suggest a tube driven pedal, or you could also look into buying a preamp or something to use for its distortion.
here are a few tube pedals to look into
a mesa vtwin pedal
a mesa v-1 bottle rocket
an akai shredmaster
an mmx metal monster

Metallica does use ESPs. Kirk uses emg 81's and James mostly uses 81's and 60's; sometimes an 85 but rarely. They do have use gibsons but James is the only one who uses a custom ESP that looks like a Les Paul and it has emgs.

i'm pretty sure its class a/b. the peavey classic 30,50 are pretty nice from what i've played... 6L6 power tubes right?,the cleans were damn good, and the distortion was pretty versitile, but for my style it still lacked a bit in the gain area, nothing an od pedal cant fix though .
how would you rate your amp for what music you play?
