lifting barbells/dumbells

Alright my mate and I had a discussion over this

what's the best way to train (at home) using weights...

Something like:
*lifting a pretty heavy weight (for your match) and lift it for example 30 times in one rush so your arms are wasted after that

or
*lifting the same weight 4 times, but every time only 7 lifts, so you are spreading your efforts evenly.

or *anything else?

pushing up on your knuckles is really effective.

dumbells meh, not really, you only train your upper arms with those

I do that already.

I use weights to train shoulders/back/chest as well..
Just need to find the best exercice scheme (quantity, number of reps,..)

it depends on you huh, nobody is the same when it comes to training really...

lifting up that 240 kg poweramp about 50 times would help though

My workout:
1 set of curls to get arms moving, and stretch
4 sets of tricept, 110bls.
4 sets of curls, 110lbs. (all directions)
4 sets of tricept, 125lbs.
4 sets of curls, 125lbs, (all directions again)
4 sets of decline bench, 100-135lbs.
8 sets(both directions) of butterflies, from 130-170lbs.
whatever amount of curls again, 155lbs.
Run treadmill for 3 miles

...my "set" is 8 reps.
...and I do this every other day..and on the in between days, I do a straight 50 pushups, hands in a diamond shape, further from the chest closer to the face....makes them harder. Hey, I can do 10 1 handed pushups!Both arms.

i've got some free weights (dumbells) and i'll usually choose a weight, lift it 12 times for 3 sets. Then i'll put some extra weight on and do same thing until i cant move my arms. Ha its funny but real hurts the next day.

There's loads of stuff i do aswell but cant be arsed to explain. If i was u, i'd go down the gym, for one day and asked some people wat they do.

If your gonna do weights, to see any real difference, u got to eat a balanced diet with quite a lot of protein in it.

...eh, I think I eat right. I don't drink soda much at all, and 3 times a day, every meal, I drink 2 glasses of powerade. I eat lots of pizza and hamburgers, no veges...donut every Tues./Thurs.........

i lift my guitar daily, i also do remote control lifts when i want to change the channel, i walk around when i talk on the phone, and i go up and down my stairs alot, and thats just at home. at school, i walk to my classes, and to the bus, and i tap my feet and hands on things alot.

i'm not sure if this is true, heard it somewhere
lift heavier weights with less reps, for mass
lighter weights, lots of reps, for definition

Its all about repitition, and not over doing it...

(each arm) I do about 20 lbs (not inc. the bar) 35x, then 20 lbs 25x, then 20 lbs 15x
25 Push ups
100 curl ups
bench 50 lbs (not including the bar) 50x

I repeat this 3 times

but im a little lazy lately... DAMN YOU XBOX LIVE!!!

it depends on what you want to do. to build muscle and gain strength, don't lift something that you can lift more than 12 times. if you keep to stuff that you can't do more than 12 times, you'll make sure that you're lifting heavier stuff which builds bulk muscle.

i prefer just to be toned, so my reps are 15-20 each with dumbell curls for various muscles.

lower reps/higher weight = more bulky muscles
higher reps/lower weight = smaller, toned muscles

my monday work out

10 sit ups on incline with 35lb on my chest
bench press 150lb 10 times
curl 75lb usally 15-20 times
6 sit ups with 35
press 185 6 times
curl 110 5 times
3 sit ups with 45
press 225 4 times
10 sit ups with 35
curl 65 15 times
press 135 10 times

Its best to work your way up through out your workout, for curls i usally just sit at home with my 40 and do it when ever i feel the energy for as many reps as i can.

also if you have weak wrists use the strait curl bar for one hand with like 50 or so. The balancing out youll have to do to hold it straight will give you a little extra strength. Another thing when doing curls with both arms make sure you are using a curved bar. Using a straight bar can result in loss of feeling in your hands (that can be perminant) and tendonitus.

My routine is pretty simplistic.
I'll do my abs, and arms one day
Skip the next day.
On the day after, do my abs, chest and back.
I use 20lb dumbells 10 reps, 3 sets for now on everything.
I'm just basically there for toning,etc.

For my martial arts stuff, I practice at least for an hour every other day.
Been doing this for almost 9 years now(In May)..
And yes, I am considered a dangerous weapon..(4th degree black)

Joining a gym is best. That way, the instructors can give you varied routines whenever you feel like your current one is getting a bit old. They'll also show you how to do the exercises properly (people make a LOT of mistakes) and answer any questions you have.

Just remember not to go on to heavy weights straight away if you're not used to working out. Just do some easy working out for a couple of months beforehand, or you might develop some problems. However, when you're used to it, you can start pushing your muscles until failure. That's best for building up muscle mass and muscle strength.

My current routine is this (I hope I can remember it, it's fairly new):

All are 3 sets of 10, then 8, then 6, increasing the weight every set.

Abs: 3 sets of 15 swis ball crunches, 3 sets of 10 knee-ins (abs done every day)

* = day 4
Day 1
Bench Press *
Lat Raise
Shoulder Press *
something i've forgotten
Tricep Extention*
20 mins treadmill

Day 2
Leg Press*
Leg Curl*
Chinup
Low Row*
Bicep Curl*
20 mins treadmill

Day 3
20 mins treadmill
20 mins upright bike
5 mins rower


My routine before that was a 2 day routine. It was all 3 sets of 10. I used to add several different exercises to it as I went along, such as an upright row, and a rear delt exercise.

day 1
Inclined barbell chest press
Lat Raise
Front Raise
Shoulder Press
Cable Fly

day 2
Dual Axis Pulldown
Low Row
Lat Pulldown
Chinup
Bicep curl
Tricep Extention

abs: 3 sets of 10 swiss ball crunches, 3 sets of 10 jack knives.


An important thing to remember is not to do the same part of the body two days in a row. You should do slow and controlled movements. Wait 30 seconds - a minute between sets. Remember to do a 10 minute warm up, on the cross trainer. It takes a while to see the results, so just keep doing your workout steadily. Once you get used to the exercise, you'll feel a thousand times better than you ever did. Both physically and mentally. Then you can laugh at all the lazy people who see no benefit in it.

But the best thing to do is to join a gym. You'll learn everything you need to know there.

Low reps with a high weight will increase muscle mass while high reps with a lower weight will increase strength. They will obviously both give you greater mass and strength, but each has been proven to work differently.

Buy a curl bar instead of using a barbell also or youll have some messed up arms after a while. Dumbells will give you the best workout i'd have to say cause it takes more energy and power to balance each weight rather then a bar which is easily balanced by two arms.

You should try to eat a lot to help with muscle regeneration (good foods, not processed crap). But be sure to do a good cardio workout after your weights to get rid of excess carbs so you don't put on much fat. Eating more will increase your metabolism too. I've found that since I started eating more with 6 meals a day instead of 3, my abs have actually improved. Also try to get a lot of sleep, that's when the body mostly regenerates.

At first I started with the bicep curl machine, and I reckon that's a good all-round workout. The resistance stays the same throughout the whole movement. Then when I couldn't progress any more, I changed to the cable fly for biceps, and that was also great. Now I'm using a curl bar. Have you seen Gregg Valentino's arms? They're fucking monsters. His site used to be bicepmania.com but now it's disappeared.


The problem with doing these weights at home is that you've only got one method of working out an area, unless you buy an entire gyms worth of equipment. As I just posted, I've had to switch between three different exercises for my biceps to progress. So if you want to work out properly over the years, be a pussy and join a gym. Working out the back is also harder to achive without proper machines. The back is the most important part, imo.

Whoever said "dont eat so much" doesnt know what their talking about. If you want to build then you have to eat MORE. Not shit food either, its gotta be stuff thats actually good for you. High protein medium carbs but maybe this is getting too far into it. Try this site, a bunch of us used to be members http://www.bodyforlife.com they got some decent tips and stuff.

Last year i started training in Uechi-ryu.

And for weight lifting i go to work and hang drywall.

I suggest going to a gym since they have all the equipment necessary to make a true workout worthy.

I've been training at a gym for over 6 months now, and i've done well to keep it up. Since i started i've gained about 20 lbs, my muscles all around have grown significantly (most noticably on my biceps where stretch marks have begun.....my left arm's actually pretty bad).

What i've been doing is 4 sets for each exercise, 4 exercises per muscle. I don't train more than 2 muscle groups a day, and i break it up into:
1. Chest and triceps.
2. Back and biceps.
3. Shoulders.
4. Legs

I mostly do heavy weights with fewer reps. I try to hit about 8-10 reps with whatever weight i'm lifting, any less to me personally is pointless......but anymore is wasted energy. I feel that if i can curl 40 pounds 10 times in a row, then i should boost to 45 and do 8 reps.

Also, whoever said to stop eating so much is wrong......instead, you should start eating more. You're gonna be burning off lots of energy, and you need to replenish it.

You should try eating things rich in protein, and try to stay away from carbs. You could go all out and starting eating protein shakes and bars, but that's goddamn expensive. I usually try to drink an extra glass of milk here or there, and mixed more meat into whatever i'm eating. Tuna fish is also great for protein, and it's incredibly cheap. (1 can averaging about a dollar, giving you between 23-27 grams of protein)

If you really want to get strong...

First u have to max out in every exercise...

then when u do sets u start with

10x of 75% max
7x of 80-85% max
4x of 90+ max

use this system through all your exercises...bench..curl ..squat etc...
you can do the sets more then once if u like...just switch between exercises to cool off

and also... rotate day by day...between upper and lower body...because u have to give your body time to heal otherwise u wont grow at all... oh and when your done do 80 full situps... if u do it before youll feel fuct up...

You shouldnt work out everyday either, according to this months muscle and fitness. Rather, excersize more during your work out and then wait a day and go when you are sore. This has been proven not to A) cause more micro-tears in you're muscles and B) Get you two work outs while only being sore once. Another thing, muscle sorenes usally goes away after about 3 days and by working out on this schedual you wont have to be sore more than you have to. Also, Cram as much protein you can up to 1 hour after you're done working out

Hahahahahahahahhahahaha, that's a pretty weak endurace man. I can do up to like 40 triangle pushups in one set. And my hands are right under my face...that's how far out I do them. Today for the first try ever, I did a real squat at 150, for 3 sets.

About 4 months I started getting into this. I was becoming a fat pathetic fuck, so I figured it was time to start caring some what about my health. So here's what I do..

Instead of eating 3 meals a day, I eat 6. (Every 2-3 hours) I've cut my caloric intake to just below about my Basal Metabolic Rate is. And with eating more times a day, I find it hard to even meet 1500 calories a day.

Everything I eat now would be considered "clean" food. Mostly natural crap. With my Caloric intake, I do a 20/40/40 split 20% of my calories come from fat. 40% come from Carbs (with less than 1% of that from sugar), and the last 40% is Protein. When I started doing this I also took an ECA stacker (which is now banned in the US) for the first month to help get my metabolism going.

My menu is pretty boring, but I find it satisfying enough to get through the day. I drink close to 10-12 10oz glasses of water a day.

When I wake up in the morning I work out every day. I work out my Abs everyday and do HIIT training along with that. On the days that I do my 70% I only do 11 minutes of HIIT, and on the 40% days I do 21 minutes of HIIT.

(On a side note HIIT is High Intensity Interval Training. I use an Eliptical machine. I do 1 minute of warmup at 30%, then immediately follow that with groups of 1 minute at 90% intensity, then 60%. For the entire 10 or 20 minutes left after the warm up. I do this AFTER lifting. To me the Lifting is more important, and I would rather not steal energy from that. HIIT practically kills your body if you stick true to it.

I do all of my workouts at home and with free weights. I feel like it helps with symmetrical building. If you're using a cable machine, one arm or leg can very easily compensate for the other lacking, and you won't notice. That will lead to uneven building of your muscles. I have the Eliptical machine, An Olypic bench with a preacher bench, and leg extention attachment. I also use a cast dumbbell set from 15-40 lbs. I do 5 exercises for each body part (biceps, quads ect) and 1 set of 10 reps for each exercise on my 40% days, and on my 70% days I do 5 exercises at 1 set of 6 reps per exercise.

I'm doing a 70/40 split right now. Which means (for example)

Monday - Biceps, and Back at 70% of my max. Abs for 20 minutes and 11 mins of HIIT.
Tuesday - Hamstrings, and Shoulders at 40% Abs for 20 minutes and 21 mins. of HIIT.
Wednesday - 21 mins of HIIT and Abs for 20 minutes
Thurdsday - Quads, and Forearms at 70%. Abs for 20 minutes and 11 mins of HIIT.
Friday - Triceps, Calves, and Chest at 40%. Abs for 20 minutes and 21 mins of HIIT.
Saturday - Abs and 21 mins of HIIT
Sunday - 21 mins of HIIT

Then the next week, everything just switches intensity. I've read a lot on how often you should work out. And from what I've read, a week is usually fine for most muscle rebuilding, unless you're completely maxing out. (Curling with 100 lbs until you can't anymore. Then do 75 lbs until you can't, then 50lbs and so on. Until your arms are totally toast) Then it can take up to a month for your muscles to completely recruit 100% of the muscle fibres back and actually achieve optimum results. Of course working out once a month is ludicrous if you want to get bigger.

As for suppliments.. Everyday I have 2 scoops of Whey with 8 oz of Soy milk. I also take a multi vitamin, and Psyllium Fiber.

As for menu, it's pretty bland, but enough to keep me going like I said.. Everyday is the same thing.. Then, on the weekends I switch to something else for Saturday and Sunday. Calorie intake goes from 1500-1800 on the weekends.

As for results. In the 3 months that I've done it.. I've lost around 70 lbs of fat. almost 10" to my waist. My arms are down an inch, but it's all muscle now. My abs are completely solid under the small layer of fat that is still there. My calf muscles have split into two distinct muscles and are getting massive.

I'm really happy with the results. And I'm pretty proud of myself for sticking with it. In the process I quit smoking just by putting them down and don't have any cravings. When I started losing weight so fast, I went to the doctor and got a check up. He was in complete awe. I took my menu in and my workout plan, and told him what I was taking. He made the comment that if everyone did what I was doing, there would be no need for doctors. So that made me feel pretty good about myself. Of course not everyone needs to go all out like this. I was getting pretty unhealthy, and I was tired of feeling like shit constantly. Now, I couldn't feel any better.

Anyways, since the topic was here, and it's something that I'm interested in now, I figured I would post my .31 cents.

I read of a routine in a mag where one guy went from 75kg to 95kg in afew weeks. To gain mass quickly, it said all you needed to do was workout once per week, one set. But it had to be a motherfucking bitch of a set and you had to warm up to it. e.g. I think you take the maximum you can lift 6-12 times and lift 75 % of that 10 times, 6 times, 4 times, then 2 times. Then after that warm up, you hit the big set; you know the one where you need your g/f to tell you you'll get a bj if you do just one more rep, but you can't. Then afew weeks later when you can do more than 12 reps, bump up the weight by 10%. But you shouldn't lift anything that you can do over 6-12 reps with. Unless you're working out to get tone.

Also, its been said countless times; if you workout several times per week, don't train the same part without 2 or 3 days in between. And eat lots of protein (eggs, meat products, rice, etc, get some carbos into you as well, since if you workout without food in you, or without eating straight after, your muscles won't rebuild. You can actually waste way your muscles as they were converted to a form to provide energy, and then they weren't rebuilt with enough protein.

By the way, what's a good way to get a six pack? I'm failry lean and sort of have one when I flex, but the skin (not flab!) on my gut is in the way. Do I need to go do a heap of aerobic exercises to get my body fat down? I tried doing 4 sets (50, 40, 30 full sit ups, then 500 half ones without my feet held down and a tilting my legs) every 2 days for about 3 months. But no results really. Then again, I don't have a good appetite, so I find weight gain difficult.

There is no such thing as targeted weight loss. If all you need to do to get a six pack is build the muscle, then that you can target, but if there's fat to lose, that will just happen naturally. I would suggest doing 100 crunches a day. 50 regular and 50 reverse. That is enough to where you aren't over working the muscle, and it's enough heat being generated to produce enough growth. Also, try doing vacuums. (exhale all the air in your lungs, and suck your stomach in while tightening your abs. Try to imagine your abs touching your spine) Hold those for 15-20 seconds 20 times in between your 50 regular crunches and 50 reverse, that will help build your abs, and also prevent them from growing outward. You can actually make your abs grow incorrectly, and it will make you look fat. I'll have to try and find a picture to show you, it's pretty fucked up. I know that these help, and breathing correctly while doing the crunches help also.

How do you do reverse crunches?

And another thing. Im a skinny bitch with a little muscle. How would i go about building muscle without any epuipment. I do 100 pushups a day. usually 4 sets of 25. And crunches in between each set.(i do as many as i can until my abs kill me and i cant do any more)

A reverse crunch is laying on your back, putting your arms at your sides and pull your legs into your chest, squeezing with your abs. At first it's going to feel like your nuts are going to explode after like 10, but you get used to them. As for your other question. My suggestion would be this. Doing what you're doing is great for building muscle. You don't NEED weights, or expensive as shit equipment to get big, but what it's going to boil down for you, is your eating habits. You might want to start eating a little more protein, and getting some sort of weight gainer supplement. Ususally those have additives, that will help put on weight that is muscle, and not fat. Then just keep doing what you're doing.

Another way (If you had weights) would be to actually pack on a few pounds, and not work out as much. Then after you've put on some weight, you go into a "cutting phase." That way you convert all of your added size back into muscle. From what I've read a lot of guys have to do this. They have an off period where they eat things heavy in calories, and protein. Then after a certain predetermined time, they start back into a more lean diet, and start cutting themselves up with some weights.

The only thing that I would really suggest is start adding a few more exercises so that you can work more of your muscles. From the sound of it right now, you're working your triceps and abs mainly. I would maybe try and find a way to do some pull ups. Or find something around your house that is pretty heavy and you can hold in your hands, then do some squats. That will help cover other areas of your body. If you can afford to, I would check out whatever local store sells weight sets, and think about picking up just a small adjustable set of dumbbells. With Dumbbells you can work every part of your body with no trouble. There are atleast 5 excersises per muscle group that you an work with Dumbbells. I've seen adjustable sets go as low as $30 bucks. So that might be something to look into.

Squatting is a pain in the arse, but you probably couldn't exercise more muscles with any other exercise alone. And that 75kg to 95kg was the best case scenario I might add.

Midnight, I know what you mean where your abs grow outwards, so with your side view they'll be further out than you pecs kind of thing. I think that's what you meant. Those vacuums sound like a bitch to do; as if regular crunches weren't annoying to do anyway...

Corpsevomit, I've been doing push ups and situps and I don't seem to be getting anywhere. It might keep you toned, but I think you need to use heavy weights and less reps to gain weight. Unfortunately, genetics often determine whether you're an easy or hard gainer, and usually there's not much you can do. I personally find it hard to gain weight.

I've seen alot of stocky fat guys that started weights and they get good results. I think its because they've got the muscle underneath from carrying all of that weight, they just need to convert some fat to muscle. I want to try eating lots of fatty foods to gain fat/weight and then do weights to bring the muscle out, but I don't have the guts (pardon the pun) to do it, as it'll probably just give me a fat ass, instead of an even distribution of fat. It'll probably wreck my fast metabolism too.

Midnight, you sound 'knowledgable': is there usually a limit to how much protein you can absorb a day, and what vitamins/minerals help the "absorption"? I figure if you ate a chook a day on average (1kg @ 20% protein = 50 grams of protein), then to put on 5 kgs would take 3 months!
Also, does muscle weigh less than fat? And if you eat a bag of chips, say it was 100% fat content, does the volume of fat in your body (ignoring burned off fat) end up being a larger volume than the size of the bag? (e.g. a handful of chip-fat turns into 3 handfuls of body-fat?)

I like to lift weights to get toned and what not, but I have to take it easy because I don't want to get to be like one of those nasty muscle chicks... But anyway, what the hell does this have to do with metal?

I have played since i was nine (1989)and I grew up on metal because my dad loved it. (judas Priest, Ozzy, And all the OLD classics), and who cares if you so tough in your underground. And just because you dont listen to grindcore, gore metal, or even bands like cannibal corpse (even though I do) doesnt mean your a "poser" Dream Theater isnt a brutal band. Does that mean its not metal? no. and finally as the "futile psudohuman" that I am i say fuck off.

Try any movement that flexes the targetted muscle (i.e. triceps, shoulders, chest). I find holding a dumbell out horizontally in front of you and pausing for afew seconds, then repeating, is good for shoulders. If you got a bench, then get 2 dumbells (c'mon 1 more won't blow the budget) and do a bench press with them for your chest. I'd also like to know another other exercises for you chest that don't require a bench. For your triceps, curl then lift above your head, or lift until horizontal out to the sides, or lift to your chest while leaning over. If they sound stupid, then maybe they are; but its not as stupid as where this thread has been going, hey?

Well the bench press I can do with a barbell right? I got one too.

I've been working out for more than a year.(Unfourtunately not everyday) I recently just got back into the gym after working out with free weights at my apartment for several months. If you can, go to a gym, there's so much shit there that is at your disposal. I used to take whey protein, but it tastes really bad so I got to get some more. Ha, and I think some people are lying about the weight they lift.
