H.I.M. vocals
I know that Valo from H.I.M. is naturally a good vocalist, but I'm curious as how to get that really deep voice he sometimes does. I think Valo does it naturally, but I'm pretty sure many bands use vocals effects to get their voice like this. New Kovenant songs also use this voice style I want to get.
If anyone has listened the chorus of "I Love You (Prelude to Tragedy)" by H.I.M. or many songs of the Kovenant album S.E.T.I., you will know what I'm talking about. Is it an effect with some reverb and pitch shifting?

Im pretty sure that most of the stuff off SETI is natural with a touch of reverb. If you listen to *cough* nightwish closely you can hear the same thing

if you have something like digitech whammy or a boss octave pedal/super shifter, you can easily expand any vocal range. they probably even have some vocal effect processors and shit that are ment for that.

Yeah, I love to get that flat, kinda empty sounding voice for when I sing some stuff. I'll have to try the reverb.
Oddly enough, I think Bal-Sagoth uses something sort of like that to get the narrative effect on the vocals. If you listen to their albums over time, you'll notice drastic changes in Byron's narrative voice. I know that he uses a pedal. While that is not exactly what I'm going for (a narrative voice), it is sort of related.

Digitech makes too different vocal processors. And their both pretty fun to play with.

Wow, it took kinda long before the idiots showed up. I'm sorry, I'll go listen to nothing but Mortician so I can be "true".
As much as you may hate it, most places consider H.I.M. to be metal. Most major metal sites, like bnrmetal, list H.I.M.

I think H.I.M. sucks too, but it dosent mean i have to go around telling people what my opinion is on what kind of music i like. But i also dont agree that H.I.M. is metal.

Im sure for studio work most bands would use fx..
i have mucked around with a mate at home doing vocals and adding fx...when we dropped 2 octaves on our voices....we had the full death metal sound....big respect for the singers that can get that deep..
chris barnes used to be my fav when he was in cannibal corpse..

Yeah, I was surprised at what the vocal fx could do with my cakewalk studio. I can get super deep growls that sound very real.
I don't use it for that though. Right now I just use an chorus effect sometimes, and I'll will add a VERY slight pitch shift to my clean voice. Also, I'll sometimes throw a flanger effect on my voice.

I hate it when some band uses vocal fx to make there voice deeper. It sounds cheap. I saw some band live a few years back with deicide and they had such a fake growl. It was acually pretty funny

i was in a hardcore/metalcore band once, where our singer used an old ibanez o.d. pedal for his voice. it sounded really dirty and scratchy when he sang. i thought it was pretty cool.
i don't really care if somebody uses effects on their voice as long as it sounds good.

Varying degrees of distortion can make your voice sound really cool. It's especially good for techno and metal mixes.

I think taht Ville was much better in Kyyria.
The music too btw.
As for the vocals training is better than effects.

No, heres a bit from an recent interview found on Earache.com
How do you look after your voice?
"It just comes naturally. I don't do anything special to look after it. When my throat is sore I can hit the highs easier than the lows, but for the most part I have a lot of control over it. The first time I toured Europe I had my tonsils taken out two weeks prior and everyone told me not to do it, but I was screaming every day for two weeks and I ended up with this fucking huge callous on it and it's sounded like this ever since."

depends on what you want to do. because, you can't train your voice to have reverb, disortion(to a certain point),delay, and many other modulation effects.
so if you want to sound a certain way, you might not have any other choice but to use effects.

Does Angela Gossow use effects on her vocals? I'm not an Arch Enemy fan and have only heard "We Will Rise" but it sounds like she's got some sort of effect on her voice during the verse.
