Go to the store and try out guitars. How hard of a concept is this to grasp?

I suggest to go with Ibanez, Jackson or Schecter. Stay away from cheaper BC Rich guitars because they are more about looks than quality and sound.

an ibanez rg line is always a solid metal guitar.
jacksons are good too but i've never played on any outside of a shop.
i always, always recommend gibson les pauls. or an SG is really good, too.
but more than anything, get into a guitar shop. maybe don't plug in if you're not confident, because i think most of us have been at that point where we don't want to so obviously suck infront of basically only people who are really good. so just hold it and strum it a bit and see how it feels to you. make sure the action isn't all messed up.. it should be pretty even across the fret board. if it's not too heavy, not too bulky, feels good to you, then it should be alright. if it's $300 or more, it'll probably sound decent, too. if not you can always replace the pickups.. pickups are almost entirely responsible for the sound.

yeah if you already play, you should know what makes a guitar good, etc.
basically, ANY guitar can be a metal guitar, just avoid single-coil pickups.
then it comes down to what you like. do you like playing solos? avoid strats (with 21 frets), and get 22/24 fret guitars
like whammy bars? get a jackson or ibanez with a locking tremolo system. or Esp, BC RICH
how big are your hands? big? get a fat les paul neck? are they small? get an ibanez rg neck
definitely do not buy a guitar without trying it out first

what are you talking about interpuntion he is pretty easy to read it makes it a lot easier to type and its easier to read when everything flows together who needs to start and stop phrases i mean why were those punctuations ever made i bet people just got bored and wanted to make grammar hard to learn i think it's pretty easy this way dont you guys

Like Atifman said, single coils don't have the balls that humbuckers do. I play a strat (got a good deal on it) and I played it beside my buddies Les Paul and he totally kicked my ass. So much more ass kick than my pathetic metal strat wannabe guitar. I'm looking for a stealth though. Anyone got $2000 they can give me to buy it???

I have to disagree about singlecoils not being suitable for metal music. I've got a Strat ripoff, and a Jackson KE3 with EMG 81/85 in it, and I can't sincerely say that the KE3 sounds better for metal, with the right amp settings. The Strat is usually tuned to C for playing In Flames, and I can pretty much match their tone, with the default singlecoils.

i don't really know in flames' tone heh. i guess it's low and metally with it tuned to C. what isn't when it's tuned that low :P
maybe you tweak the crap out of your settings to match that tone.. who knows. but from my experience (played probably 6 different real strats.. not fat strats) single coils aren't nearly as mean as humbuckers. of course, maybe if you use a metal zone or something, who knows. i don't use a distortion pedal.. i get all of that from my amp, and it's not the same with single coils.
what amp are you using?

Make sure you check out ESPs. They look good and you can get one with a floyd rose and some emgs which is a pretty much what you need for metal. You'll need about $400. ESPs also have fast necks which are pretty nice. Jacksons aren't bad either.

I use a Boss GX-700 which is a now discontinued rackmount multi effect. I've set it up to model a MetalZone (drive 80, bass -15, treble +15, lvl 55) going into an EQ pedal (low +4, midfreq 800hz, mid -20, midq 1, high +3, lvl +2) going into a Peavey 5150 (b 80, m 25, t 65, pres. 0, gain low), and to my ear it is extremely close to In Flames' tone. (Which is, yeah, low and metal)

Ah yes, another what-guitar-should-i-buy thread. well here i go supporting my guitar. Ibanez rg's are great for metal playing. since you already are looking at the RG's, i'd suggest one with a Floyd rose or any other type of locking trem ( mines has an edge-pro II that stays in tune BEAUTIFULLY.
If oyu want sustain, get an ibanez RGT42. it's cheap, it sounds nice, it's BEAUTIFUL, and it's a neck-thru. you CANT go wrong. VEEERY ballsey guitar
Well i can tell ya these other blokes on this site will tell you more about the rest of the RG line. Mainly because Almost all of us own one, either that or a warlock (go figure). just DONT BUY an rg 350 dx. not that it's a bad guitar. actually it's an awesome guitar. nice sound, sharp look, sustain, and excellent tuning. but it's my guitar, AHAHAHAHA!!!
it's awkward to know that someone has the same guitar that i do. so thats why i'm gonna say not to buy it

Man, just get what you can, for 4 - 5 years I played on a Fender Rip Off, and it was just for practising, and now I have a BC Rich bronze warlock, and Im saving up for a BC Rich Plat. Pro Jr. V, and same thing goes with an amp when you get one, who care what it is, its just for practise, I got a Old School Randall RG-80, and the thing can't distort, but with the Metal Zone, I have one of the most brutal distortions around, its soooo clean, and loud, and before that it was the same company as the crappy guitar I had, but I sold it to some little kid for $120 (It paid for my guitar case ).

I agree with fearfrost when he said that you should just get what you can. But, at least look around some to find something that will give you what you want in sound. If you're not happy with the sound, then what's the point of getting any guitar that you can. Find one that's right for you. None of us can tell you that exact guitar.

You can't go wrong with an ESP or Jackson. Their great guitars and like posted earlier if you don't like the tone you can always change the pickups. A "metal" guitar can be any guitar though it depends on what else you used to get your tone like your amps, effects, etc.

we cant tell you if you bought a good guitar. only you can. after all, youre the one palying it and its all a matter of preference and who is playing.
and why would you ask if its a good guitar AFTER you buy it?

here his a great place to go if you want to know wether or not a guitar is good or not before you but it. you can read reviews and even post your own.
